Title: New Saber: Ultrasabers Mantis
Post by: Deep on July 23, 2014, 07:51:15 AM
Ultrasabers is proud to present the new Mantis. This is the first curved Ultrasaber made of T6 Aircraft Aluminum and it is absolutely awesome. Some sabers have one standout feature, either the emitter looks great, or the pommel looks great, or the body has great detail, etc. The Mantis is a saber that has standout features from top to bottom. The emitter on this saber is just jaw dropping. The size, shape, and detail all go together so well. The 3 cut out slots accent the blade perfectly and the 10 small windows give that extra flare to the emitter every time you ignite the blade. And the option to get the emitter with or without the claws gives you the choice to make your Mantis menacing or elegant at any given time. The High Polished shroud below the emitter is yet another standout feature on the Mantis and provides a smooth and stylish transition to the curve in the hilt. The body of the saber offers even more eye candy with the High Polished ribbed under body tailored with an anodized or High Polished shroud to create a style unique to the Mantis. And who could forget the classic premium pommel style. This pommel style is beloved by Ultrasabers fans everywhere and it goes perfectly with the Mantis.

This saber is built with the highest quality T6 Aircraft grade aluminum. It will stand up to rigorous use time and again. The materials used to forge this weapon are second to none. Aircraft grade aluminum and CNC machined precision goes into the creation of every saber in the Ultrasaber.

This saber comes standard with a covertec wheel installed.

The saber comes completely assembled and ready to go. This is a six piece saber (emitter, neck shroud, elbow, body, body shroud and pommel) and the emitter, elbow, body, and pommel are all MHS compatible. In addition the shroud and emitter claws are removable. This saber is 14.25" long from emitter to pommel and 1.7" wide at the body. This saber is 17" long from claw to pommel with the claws equipped.

Wow, I might have to sell my Count Dooku so I can get one of these! Incredible work guys, thanks for finally coming out with this, it was definitely worth the wait.

Is there any way to mix and match finishes perhaps? I like the silver one, but I'd like to accent it with black in some way. Also, would it be possible to double up on the elbow joint to get a nicer curve out of it maybe? Just some weird custom questions.

I just realised how awesome that Mantis CE would look if it was nickel plated...

I think I'm going to email Emory and tell him if he ever releases a nickel plated Mantis CE, then he's welcome to just bill me and ship it out without waiting for me to order... :)

Well, I'm very glad we finally have the curved option. As for this particular model, it's not quite my Tate...I think it's starting to grow on me, just want to switch emitters on it.

My question is when will the MHS elbow piece be available? I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

THE CURVED HILT HAS ARRIVED!
I would havd prefered something with more of a gradual cruve but its still an awsom saber and i still want one. It might be a while before I can though

Well... That's a beast of a hilt.

I love the CE version. Definitely jumped onto my wishlist, without claws I think in my case. Hmm, what colour blade would work with it...?

Lots of MHS, quick disconnects, pommel options, option to buy both emitters at the same time... Hmm, $400 for the setup I'd want. But wow, that's an amazing looking hilt.

Great work, guys!

(And just think, chances are there's one or two of them in the raffle prize pile... :o)

This has been a wish for customers and members (such as myself) for a really long time. I'm glad to see Ultra and Deep were able to make this a reality!
I've known its been in the pipeline for a while (sworn to secrecy :P), but I am really happy that they didn't rush it and created the saber with the same UltraSabers design and quality that we all know an love.

Again, nice work, guys!

Wow!  That thing is impressive, especially in the highly polished, chrome-like finish.  That's a seriously time consuming process to get all of those pieces of alum polished to shine like that.  I think it def looks better without the claws on the emitter.  That polished one in the pic with the CG blade looks smooth.  Nice job fellas!

Beautiful work. I agree with others, a mix and match of the components would be nice. Would also be nice to know how the elbow is connected to see if it can be removed and replaced.   Looks amazing as-is though. A little too expensive for me at the moment, but someday maybe.   Wonder if they will make it the DotD for the current raffle?

Aww jeez. That is sweet. I love that emitter. Glad I got one early. I was going. To get a bellicose and then a guardian and while I'm not a huge fan of curved hilts this thing is awesome. I may have to get one.

The Mantis' page says all 6 pieces, including the elbow, are MHS compatible...

Now it's just a matter of time until said piece is for sale separately.

Please be soon, for those of us who cannot afford new hilts

Compatible, yes. But how easy are they to take apart? Is it like the shrouded sabers where you need lots of time and be a pretty good hand at precise technical things? or does it come apart like the  others?
That is my question, since they all look to be aligned the same exactly, I am wondering if the threads are exactly precise or if there is something else a little more technical involved.

I would love to see a non-curved version of this hilt, as it is epic looking otherwise.  ;)

You guys know we typically don't give any intel on DotD sabers of the future.  But I would feel bad having folks sitting around waiting for a saber this special to pop up as the DotD knowing it's not going to happen for a long time.  So, I will make an exception and make it known this one time that no versions of the Mantis will be the DotD during the raffle or for quite a while for that matter.  With the demand that DotD sabers draw, we don't have the stock at this time to merit that.

BRAVO U.S. Team! I'll be honest, Although curved hilts are not my 'thing'?! The Mantis is BEAUTIFUL!! And in soooo many different versions!  :o

Invested time and money for only one...I think not! This is the test saber to see how curved sabers demand will grow or slow...I promise if this one sells well the "Count"down will begin!

Anyway this is a sey sabers and honestly didn't expect anything less from US! They make great products for the fans and they are also saber enthusiasts so obviously a curved saber was coming, but this is why 8 love this company because they will never put something up for sale that doesn't completely give the customer what they want and beyond.

I actually do like this design. I wouldn't buy the blue or red anodized model of this, but the Dark and CE versions are really cool! Plus the option to buy BOTH versions of the emitter is a great feature!

I might have to get one next year, and I'm not one for curved sabers. Looking forward to the next great design from US!!!

I like the design as well, I think I just have a "thing" about curved hilts, rather like Prowl and his feelings towards the Monarch.  :-)
that being said, this is a stunning hilt and impressive, it will make a HUGE impression and anyone with a "sith" bent is going to want one in their collection I think.
I especially like the purchase option to get both emitters (clawed and de-clawed) which gives you mulitple looks with one purchase.  Very nice!

I am also interested to hear some "battle reports" on them, to see how they do as dueling blades.  I know the curved hilt is supposed to be somehow advantageous, I'd love to see/hear how it works out.

And of course, the dream of the "Count" hilt continues unabated...  ;-)

Curved hilts are amazing for dueling! The bend gives you an slight edge cause you don't have to move your wrist as much. Though, I forget which saber style destroys Dooku's style... But none of my friends will know what it was in practice, so I'll have the edge for sure.

I'm interested in seeing pics when everyone gets theirs. I got a black mantis in BR with both emitters and the quick disconnect. I think it'd look great in CG or GB as well, not to mention probably any purple. Might pick up DVA in the future...

I just ordered a CE in emerald green with both emitters.  I've never really been a fan of that style of pommel so I am hoping I can use the clawless emitter as a pommel instead.  I'll have to see if it's compatible when it comes in.

The Mantis is a nice piece of work and I love all of the options it has, two emitters with the ability to order both, two pommel types, four hilt versions to choose from, it's most impressive.  Not a fan of curved hits myself but I am glad to see that many are getting their wish for a curved hilt answered.  And I'm hoping that future sabers will have as many options to choose between that the Mantis has.  The future looks good!

Not to mention that you can also get either the guardian or scorpion pommel with your saber:).

Molina00 it will work. I got that clawed emitter early with the last raffle and for curiosity sake I stuck it on the bottom of my dark prophecy and it fit just fine. It made it look like an old rocket from some 50's sci fi though. Honestly I have never been a fan of curved hilts only because they seem like they would be somewhat awkward to wield but I love the look of this one. I'm hoping I manage to get lucky with this raffle and can get one along with my entry saber (bellicose in BR) if not then ill for sure get one in the next few months. I'd love an emerald but that's way over my price range for what is essentially a collectible for myself.   So I'll just get one with sound but I already know I want the CE version with both emitters in either GB or CG. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks again US, you guys rock. Oh also, to anyone who does for some reason end up with two of them... Please stick me together into a staff and show us what that would look like...

Basically any Tim Burton movie.  And this is going back a ways, but all the Hammers films where he played Frankenstein's monster and Dracula.
According to his Wiki filmography he has appeared in over 200 movies since 1948.  The next Hobbit movie will be #204.

But to get things back on track, this is going to be an awesome mail week for you Kentavius.  The regular Manticore is an awesome saber and the CE is just beautiful, and that black Mantis is going to be beastly.

It will indeed be awesome. I threw in a grab bag saber with the Manticore just to kick the price up so I could enter for the raffle. I wouldn't have ordered it so soon had I known the Mantis was coming out 2 days later, but oh well. They will be seen by all, that much is true!

At the next best chance, I'll rob my bank account and buy the hell out of this saber with all the available features. (If that makes sense xD)
The emitter with those many details, the curved main body, the "sleeve" and the silver accents below which imo make it look like the saber has gills or exhaust-vents (sort of) make this saber a must have. :D
One thing I'm missing though in the recharge-port options, is the kill key. ^^"

That makes sense I guess...haven't been on here for a few weeks.

In line with the "always on" option, I thought this would be a nice feature.
With the saber on your belt, have the key tied to the same belt and inserted into your saber...upon "drawing" the saber the key pops out because it's tied to your belt and thus "booting" the saber.

Still, I'll nevertheless add this to my series sometime...for sure. :D

REVIEW

Hello. It looks good and durable. Hope there is no power problems because of the curved hilt, transmission wise. The design is cool. The emitter guard is great, hopefully there will be finger guards you make apart from the triprong emitter guards. It also looks like the weapon can be joined with another Mantis to form a lightsaber that is double-bladed with curved hilts. Thank you.

Molina, I'm actually considering that, with a modification.  If I ever do this, I will bend them both forward and then mount a small blade across the gap inside the curve, probably a modified initiate, and wield it like a bat'leth, a Klingon sword from Star Trek.

That would be about the most awesome cross-over I can think of to take to a Con.   ;D

Well, my Guardian will get ordered in the NEXT raffle.  Assuming similar prize packages, the only way this is going to happen in the near future would be if I won one of the top two prizes.
Getting a pair of Mantises with Obsidian AND Emerald would be amazing, though...  Simply amazing...

But, I just got through talking with Deep not too long ago about upgrding my Manticore to 4 Channel RGBA & getting another Maticore to make a staff.  I really want to complete this Manticore staff.  But, dang a CURVED HILT STAFF would be pretty sweet to me.  I really like the pommel too, I have the Guardian pommel on my Manticore & I really like that.  But, the thought of a 4 Channel with sound MANTIS STAFF may be too much for me to bare.  Or at least to dual wield (hehehehe).

It is kind of awkward to wield two-handed.  I can handle it one-handed and I think the best hand position at least for me, is right below the activation switch on the bare part if the main hilt.  The balance with a 32" regular UE blade was ight where the emitter meets the neck piece.

Yeah, that's what I'd advise. Two-handed can be done, it's not that awkward, but the design seems to be meant for weilding one-handed.

The neck shroud covers a couple of holes. What their purpose it, I'm not sure. Too low for a blade retention screw, plus there's four of them. Easy enough to take off though, just unscrew the emitter and it comes right off.
As for the body shroud, I don't have the proper hex key to take off the covertec knob. Believe me, I would've taken it off if I could, I'm just as curious.

I took of my covertech wheel and started twisting the shroud trying to take it off.  I noticed the battery pack was rotating along with it so I stopped and put it back the way it was.  I don't know if it supposed to come off or not, but I expect I will be leaving mine on.

It's not too bad, it is heavy though.  Unless you have strong arms I would not recommend it with heavy grade blades.  And the pommel end of the Mantis is thicker than the Aeon so the flush coupler isn't flush, you need to watch you grip or your hand might catch on the end of the Mantis.  It isn't really something I would want to wield.

Title: Re: New Saber: Ultrasabers Mantis
Post by: Greywalker83 on July 28, 2014, 02:03:34 AM
Awesome. Thanks for doing that. My next two sabers I want are a guardian and mantis but a staff could be fun and I wasn't sure how it would work out to mix the mantis with a straight blade.  It looks neat though. It also seems like one of those designs that if you were to master something like that it would be difficult for someone to combat against, similar in thought to going up against most staff users or light whips etc.

It actually looks a lot better with the standard coupler because of how thick the hilt is.  I may have to get me another CE down the road so I can do that.
Thanks Emory for posting these pics.

Okay, so I noticed the Mantis pommel splits into two parts (plus a separate ring with the spikes) so I played around and did this.

They are definitely retention screw holes.  I guess if you want a really stable blade, I don't know.  Five screws seems like overkill though.  As a side note, I like the Mantis emitter on the Archon.  I think it's a good fit and takes advantage of all the windows/holes.

Those are not all retention screw holes.  Only one is.  The rest are for cosmetic contrast between the windows.

I got the clawed and clawless emitters.

The holes we are talking about are hidden by the neck piece when the emitter is screwed in all the way.  All 4 are threaded for retention screws.

That's what I thought but I didn't know for sure that's what they were for.  Thanks for the confirmation.  Either way they make for even more nice windows when used on other sabers or on the Mantis without the neck piece.

LOL  I knew I wasn't the only one thinking along those lines.
My idea was to link the Mantis hilts curved foward and then use a mounted Initiate across the inner curve to create a scythe effect and give the center coverage.  A better idea would be to fabricate an emitter only and attach it to one side (or both) of the Mantis hilts and wire the LED into the Mantis itself so that the blade activated with one of the hilts.

ALas, it is also beyond my skills to fabricate, but once the idea is out there someone will make it happen.  :-)

That is my impression of it as well.  Although I am not that into customizing my sabers.  I imagine someone could take the shroud off if they really wanted to, but it doesn't seem like it is meant to come off easily.

It's very possible, I've done it. I've disassembled my Mantis down to the bend. It helps if you pull your battery harness out to the full extent of the wires and take the batteries out. Then, leaving the Covertec in place, grip the bend and the shroud and unscrew in a normal counter-clockwise fashion. Take periodic pauses to unravel your wires if you need to. Once the threads aer completely disengaged, gently push the battery harness through the body tube. Take off the Covertec, and slide the shroud off. Boom.

I've been wondering on standard stunt set ups, is it still a bit complicated to take the battery pack out? Still really digging the CE version in Blazing Red. Would look sweet.

If you've looked at my 'haves' list, you'll know what i got. I went Emerald cuz it was on sale. Also thought why settle for one color. But that was also before I foundout how the Quick Disconnects worked. I got them on my Shock LE. {Phase 1 of Operation: Rainbow Arsenal complete. Muahahaha} My original scheme was to run with an Ebony & Ivory theme, once I perfected a black blade. I want my Mantis CE with black blade and Dark Mantis with a white blade. Epic.

Sorry, ADHD flare-up. The batteries will need to be out if you have the Li-ion set up. I don't know about lesser power systems. I also forgot to mention. There is a coupler that holds the body to the bend. That's why they have Covertec threads like every 15° all the way around the body. (Machining threads to deliver the same stopping point to allow proper allignment of a bent work piece would be an impossible nightmare.) The coupler has to stay on the bend in order to get the body and shroud off. Again not sure about the AAA set-up.

I can tell you from experience, the sound is great. It definitely adds to a live show, but if you're going to record, you'll probably want to try adding your own SFX. I keep my OSBs on factory settings, and the motion sounds go off just from walking.

There will be many more to come.  It's possible(?) they sold more than they're making and just need to catch up on manufacturing.  On occasion they send a mass email saying which sabers are back in stock. But it'll be more accurate for you to keep checking back on the Dark Mantis order page at the US website for availability. We never know for sure how long sabers are out of stock.

the only issue I personally have with the mantis is that it looks like it's made to be a a two handed saber rather than a single handed saber

Two things....

1) You need to post in RULES.

2) Despite the Mantis' overall girth, a curved hilt is most effective in being more ergonomic in a two-handed stance. But it should work in either case. If you can handle the weight of this hilt, it works great for either.

thanks for the info on both your points

I love my Mantis, but I will say that it is far bigger than I thought it would be.  I can work with it pretty well in dueling, especially two-handed,  but I have to get my strength up to really wield it one-handed. It is a pretty hefty saber. My wife Dominix v4 is crazy light. One-hand with ease. I duel wield it with an initiate.

Yes, it does take some getting use to.

The Mantis emitters with claws have not been available for a while. Does anyone know if this is a stock issue or other reason?

More than likely it's a stocking issue. Doubtless it is not a fast mover like the canon sabers or the V-series, so its restocking is not as high a priority.

From what I have heard, the mantis is very difficult to duel with and is hard to hold for smaller people or people with smaller hands. I think you chould stay with the consular. Maybe they are making a new one and that's why they are taking so long to ship, you never know. ;)

The Mantis is one of the coolest looking US on offer, unique and one of a kind. It wins in the looks department. I would agree however that is on the large side and not the best for dueling. So it all depends on what one is after.

This is my video of it,

Does anybody know when the Mantis emitter with claws will be available, if ever? It's been out of stock for a long time.

Sorry this is way late but I heard from good source that they're coming back VERY soon.  Also heard that they will be made available in the section where you can buy just the emitters so people can scoop them since they've been gone so long :).

Just got the email shipment confirmation today for my Crimson Mantis.  When I went to buy my first Saber, I was all set to go straight Silver hilt, with a Sunrider Destiny bladecolor.  The price made me unsure (was alsoconsidering the Raven, -$20 cheaper).  Then I watched the Release Video and saw all the hilt varieties on display.  That's when I knew I needed to go for the Red/Silver Mantis.  I had originally planned on a more Lightside theme, but then after I saw the Red/Silver, I switched to a more Darkside colorof Fire Orange.

I chose Orange over Red for the blade because aside from being the same color as my Honda CBR motorcycle, Orange is my favorite color anyways.

Just went with a Basic Sound saber, and a Silver Flash on contact.  Didn't need anything crazy or super fancy, but I knew I wanted sound with it
