Welcome to Drahcir's Custom Weathering Services

This is my permanent thread in which I offer my customization services.
These services include a wide arrange of modifications to the exterior of Ultrasaber’s hilts.
I’m probably best known for my weathering services, but I’m open to almost anything – if your ideas are interesting or you’re cool with me experimenting then the sky is the limit on what I’m willing to do.

If you’re interested in any custom work from me give me a private message with your ideas. My favorite projects are the projects where I get to bring your ideas to life – so I’m more likely to take it on if you’ve shown some initiative on what you would like done.

Price is based on what sort of work you are wanting done and is more-or-less on a case by case basis. Price can only be discussed via Private Message.

Examples of some of my Work*:

*These are just a select few of the customs I've done - I've done dozens and dozens at this point, many of which can be seen by scrolling through this thread.

A big thanks to Emory and Ultrasabers for giving me the ok to offer weathering services to people's sabers for a fee.

Brother, this is GREAT news!  You're getting your "fix" while helping others!  Instant Karma!  I hope you get to the etching mod soon cause' you have me for that service!  Rock on with your love!  MTFBWYA, brother!

Ha, etching would be a pretty awesome thing to do. I think it'd look great on some of the simpler hilts.

Hi, may i ask what color "The Exile" was in the beginning? Black or silver?

Hi, may i ask what color "The Exile" was in the beginning? Black or silver?

It started as black, then I sanded it down to almost completely silver, and then applied paint as I felt appropriate.
A silver hilt is almost always easier to work on than a black one.

Check it out!

WHOAH!  THAT is one AWESOME CREATION!!!  I love it!  The black guarded switch.....I'm a little on the fence with it and it's blending with the hilt: I'm not a fan of guarded switches. :P  If the switch was and AV, black and recessed or even purposed as US does, with a little weathering, it would look so much more sweet.  YET, that is my opinion.  You're work is Top Flight!  No criticism, brother, just an observation.  Otherwise, you know how I feel.  Great job!  I hope this is really working out for you!? ;D  Have a drink on me!

Hi Drahacir.  That Prophecy and your others are fantastic.  :o.  Do you have to remove or protect the electronics in any way.  Really want to destroy that Aeon but am nervous about the heat from dremel burrs on the aluminum transferring to the internals.  Sure wish that you lived in Canada.  Perhaps you will get some grab bag or stunt sabers to modify, stick a covertec wheel on and make available off site.  Please PM me if this happens.  Creative point for you.  :)

On my personal sabers I've taken to modifying them, but since it's what I'd consider part of the electrical components I won't touch them on other people hilts.
Just my own little policy of not touching the electronics.

Love this hilt though.

I just take the dremel to them slow, if the aluminum starts to heat up I stop and let it cool I'm careful to remove sharp edges and the like as I go too. I'm pretty big about not touching the electronics of other people's hilts since I don't want to be responsible for any problems. Taking it slow I've never had issues, even on my own hilts where I've been less careful it's still never had any detrimental effects on the internals. I do protect the internals when I cut windows or stuff like that by using a damaged blade as a buffer. I've seriously considered doing that with some grab bag hilts, if I do I'll be sure to let you know.

Oh no, I thought this was the hilt you spoke of in an earlier thread that was "yours".  Absolutely!  You can't change the purposed portion of the saber a customer sent you.

Really nice work!

Just a thought, but for greater impact when you post your completed customizations, you should use an App like PhotoGrid to do a "Before" and "After" pic embedded side by side.

I've thought about it, but have never done it since I figure you all know what these things look like beforehand.
Might give it a go in the future though!

The new saber looks amazing, but i have two questions, do you sand the hilt to get the weathering effect? and how do you make the cracks in the hilt?

Thanks! I do sand the hilts and I use an engraving tool to get the cracks.

Hey Drahcir,  I have to give you huge praise and awe for the work you do on these sabers.  Have started on my Aeon v3 and just had to go and buy some tungsten dremel burrs as wore some weaker ones out already.  This is going to take a long time to complete.  It sounds like a dentist's office in my apt. so if I don't use for short periods only I'm bound to be lynched.  Also I have gotten carried away with a longer emitter window design.  Darn it that aluminum is so thick !  Not complaining about the saber sturdiness under other circumstances.

Members may I highly suggest letting the Artistic Master create his magic on your saber.

Here's another appreciation point and a humble bow.  ;D

Thanks a ton D7 for the kind words!
Deep cuts in these hilts, particular those thicker ones are certainly a tedious process.
I'm sure yours will come out great when all is said and done, but until then have a point and some friendly encouragement!

How much would it be to weather a DOMINIX LE V3   with a Dark Catalyst pommel? I assume it depends on what all I want done on it, but what's the general rage?

Personally not a big fan of the cracked emitter, just because I'd imagine the saber failing catastrophically at that point, but man, nice execution.  Really digging the worn metal texture on the emitter and claws, especially.

To be fair that sort of catastrophic failure look is really what I go for in some of these. I've even been developing a sound font to accompany it, something very electrical sounding. Thanks though, I love "dirtying up" the shinny polished metal to make it look like it's seen a lot of action.

Quick REVIEW of Drahcir's Custom Weathering...

I really like what he's been doing here with his custom weathering and thought I'd love him to do something for me at some point, then a couple weeks ago things fell into place, and now I'm sooo lucky to have a one of a kind, customised Ultrasabers Raven.....

I PM'd, we discussed what I had in mind, an approx price for his work, and some other logistics, then it was up to me to get it to him so he could start.... As I'm in Australia, a quick email and Emory agreed for me to purchase the Raven but ship it to Drahcir in the USA.....

The Raven.... I've been playing with an RGBA Emerald saber and fallen for a deep "blood orange", and Emory kindly setup a custom LED colour using an RGBA module wired with the Red and Amber diodes (for the same price as a forum colour)..... This combined with a black / orange illuminated av, obsidian v4 soundboard, Li-Ion, BuckPuck, recharge port, MG blade, normal edition claws and SS edition pommel was the starting point.....

The standard Raven......
(http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/ah119/JediXIX/78E6888C-52C6-41A4-88D1-C22C076E6929_zpst5eky2ce.jpg) (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/JediXIX/media/78E6888C-52C6-41A4-88D1-C22C076E6929_zpst5eky2ce.jpg.html)

All I told Drahcir was that I'd like some kind of emitter window letting the blade light thru, and that I'd liked what he'd done with "The Pillar"..... I wanted to leave the rest up to him..... Letting the Force guide him, lol..... He kept me informed when he was starting, then sent thru some photos for a first look..... WOW..... He also clearly said if I wanted anything altered, re affirming it was "my saber" and not to be afraid to ask, so I did, a slight modification to the "gash" at the emitter..... Some more confirmation photos, then final clear coats to seal the weathering effects..... He shipped it to me, and......

AMAZING..... This Raven is a work of ART, looks like a Sith relic that has been wielded with much anger and hate....  I absolutely love it..... The detail is truly astonishing and well worth the modest cost, in my opinion..... I've taken some pics to share here, they show better than I can explain in words of this masterpiece.....

Yeah, I actually played off the alter ego idea in the weathering.
The sith saber has a darker looking damage scheme.

The detailing on this one is amazing. I love the distressed uniformity of the weathering, and that blasted out section is the best you've done IMO!

Std Sentinel.
Std sabers are infinitely easier to work with than dark ones, it allows so much more control with how much black is seen on the hilt. It's also really hard to dull the look of black anodized material, which is kind of important in weatherig it.

I had a feeling the sentinel would be a fun one to work on when I got the request. The angles on it made the window much easier to create than on some other hilts.

What can I say... your talent is amazing.  :o   Out of curiosity, what weathering levels are the Standards and Sentinel ?  That blast looks like a meteor strike.  I would love to see you add other colors such as perhaps a drip/ooze of blood red to a saber.  :D  Here's your point Artistic Master.

Anything I add a damaged window to I consider elite just because it's such an involved and time consuming process.

I've considered a dried blood looking color, like a dark maroon, but haven't tried it yet. Currently I use black, brass, and gold on all of these in order to get a depth to the weathering that one color wouldn't allow.

And thanks for the point!

Wow, that does look amazing!! Just outta curiosity, it probably wouldn't be possible to do a damaged window like this on a catalyst would it? (Since led housing sits so far up in second part of emitter?)  Man, that last job looks great- I definitely gotta employ your services for a saber, I'm just waiting to grow my collection a bit more so can choose the right one (only made my first order a couple of months ago).

Yeah, it'd never work on the Catalyst - even if I though I might be able to squeeze one in I wouldn't because I'd be afraid to compromise the strength of that emitter with such a shallow blade depth. Just shoot me a pm if you ever want to enquire about me doing one.

I must say the greatest thing about this is being able to both handle so many different sabers US offers and then adapt my process to the lines, curves, and edges of each hilt.

If you ever want me to take my tools to a hilt you know where to find me.

To post pictures most people use Photobucket - but you would need to create an account.
Another option is tinypic, which I often use.

Drahcir did an amazing job on this hilt and was kind enough to weather the pieces I added from my shop, as well as some grip tape and o-rings I included. That first picture really showcases a lot of good things. I'm particularly fond of that mark on the emitter that continued down to about halfway through the length of the hilt. The crack near the pommel in the second is also a really elegant touch.

In the third picture, second saber, I'm intrigued by that double-set of gashes adjacent to the activation switch.

I'm also just really digging the color of a hilt once it's been weathered. It really gives it a lot of character.

Aha, it's like a special edition hilt in my mind, so that Graflex will stay special.

I love that style of wrapping, I actually ordered leather in several colors so that I could offer it if anyone ever wants it (I had to order it from Japan).

The bolt scar was pretty experimental on my part, the Manticore emitter is so thick that I had more room to play with it.

How nice another prophecy came your way, and that manticore too. Tight work my Sith counter-part :-* :P

The prophecy really is a nice hilt, every time I touch one I think to myself I need to order one.

Thanks, Dark Side points, of coarse.

The sabers are truly amazing.  I have a total of 5 Ultrasabers and these 2 are my most custom ones.  The Prophecy is my son's, he is 7, and we dual with it daily now.  I bought him 2 Menace sabers with sound for his birthday and my daughter kind of took those over.  The Manticore is mine and I just changed the color to Crimson after receiving it weathered.  My first Scorpion may be done too now that I have seen these.  My only negative/drawback is that the clear coat makes the sabers much more slippery when dueling, over the standard anodized aluminum.

I will post pics tonight!

But like, what's the texture?

It's a very smooth, sleek feel after the protective coat is on it.
I'm capable of dulling it with really fine sandpaper though.

I put a clear coat on one of my sabers, but it  has an almost sticky consistency, what kind of clear coat do you use?

Thanks! I'd love to have you weather a saber for me... But I'll need the money to buy a new saber and to pay you first. So for now I'm just playing with the two I have.

How durable is the paint job you do? Can you dull a saber to make it look like a well-kept antique instead of an abused tool?

It's quite durable, it's got a protective coat that will keep it as such.
It's only coming off if you seriously abuse it.

I could, yes, that wouldn't be an issue.
Do keep in mind, with a weathering like that the more grooves and detailed features a hilt has the better it will look.
Something like a Standard Issue, will be dulled down, but it won't have the same effect as something like a Graflex.

Sorry it took me FOREVER to finally write a review of these awesome sabers. Life came my way. I tried to make a slide show of the before and after pictures the best I could. As you can see they started a very nice, shiny black and silver. I asked Drahcir to heavily weather these sabers and possibly add a new window as if the Jedi/Sith has used this saber for a while. As everyone says, Drahcir did NOT disappoint. I was impressed with the pictures he sent but they looked even better in person. I can't thank you enough Drahcir for the GREAT work you did. Will def be sending you two more soon. Let me know what you guys think and once again VERY SORRY it took so long to write this and add the pictures.

With out further ado. Here is the new and improved double sides light saber I call "Torn". (Sure you can figure out why that is a perfect name)

Alright folks, I asked Drahcir to do something experimental with my Aeon grab bag. I asked him if he could do something to make it look very weathered, but also kind of patchwork as if it had been repaired and damaged repeatedly. This is what he came up with:

As you can see, the craftsmanship is superb and I am blown away by this custom work. A big thank you to Drahcir for such a great execution on a fuzzy experimental idea.

When I had first started I considered doing something of the sort, but I eventually decided not to.
I try to create what people envision their hilts to look like, to their specifications - a makers mark doesn't fit into that idea for me.
A big part of the fun of this is bringing peoples' ideas to life.

My hilts probably have some distinctive patterns to them if you really tried to find them, but nothing intentional.

I'm familiar with the hilt, having swung it around many times, but I haven't weathered one yet.
I could definitely do something with it it if you decide to go that route.

Actually to you and anyone else who reads this, this is a great time to request work from me.
I only have two projects lined up currently, so the wait wouldn't be long.

Just a heads up to everyone, I'll be out of town the second half of December and the beginning of January.
If you're wanting a hilt done for the Holiday season you need to think about getting it to me within the next two weeks.

I might be able to get one or two done during the holiday season, but don't count on it.

Color the hilt itself? Silver nearly always is a better base than black anodized, but I can worth with either.

Hi there,

i am so glad i found this thread. I want to get a Dominix LE v4 (obsidian lite sound, blood red blade) to go with a sith zombie character I am working on. As cool as ulrasabers are, a brand new one would look a little out of place with my character.

How much would you charge for rusted weathering, cracking, grip, deep hilt cuts, scorch marks etc? (similar to the reference picture.

Also, as I'm based in the uk, would it be possible for me to get ultrasabers to post the saber to you first? (makes more sense than them sending it to me, me sending back across the ocean to you and then having you send it back to me)

thanks

point from me as well :).  I especially like around the very top of the grips on that thicker section and around the activation box - the light weathering really does add a whole other level of realism (realisticness can't be a real word, can it ?! Lol) to the sabers IMO. It looks so awesome.  Great work!

Yeah, a lot of people don't request the light weathering from me, but it's definitely the most realistic in terms of general use grime.
A lot of people see my heavy stuff - relic-esque and they jump all over it.

he posted on the thread that he would be away for a few weeks over the Christmas/new Year period. I know he has only just got back (he posted a hello earlier this week I think). I am sure he will get back to you soon. As with Ultrsabers, he probably has a number of messages in his inbox. he's a really nice guy too, so just be a bit patient. Once I start getting "back stories" for these sabers, I'm gonna have them customized to represent their history

Alright everyone, I think I went through every message regarding customs I had - if I missed you by any chance just shoot me a message and we can talk.
As I'm sure you all probably expect by now there's a bit of a waiting list right now - or I assume there will be once everyone gets back to me.

As details are worked out, some people decide to not go through with a customization, and others send me their hilts I'll be able to give you guys a better idea what kind of wait time there will be on these.
Progress is being made!

Sabers with a back story are my favorite ones to work on.  ;)

Do you tie on the Leather grips or use adhesive?

The short answer is both and it depends.
I've done a handful of different wrapping styles, most involve some sort of adhesive -and- tying.

Does the adhesive damage the saber?

Nope, it can even be removed with the right know-how.

I was curious, you mostly do scratches, scrapes, cracks, grips, scorch marks, and weathering, right? At least, thats whats advertised. I've seen other things on here, like blood, and I was wondering exactly what can you do? Only what is on the front page, or will you make it look like anything for the right price? This should really be defined clearly somewhere. Like a Do's and Dont's list.
I'm talking about things like heat tint, grease, oil, dirt, rust, chipped paint, ash and soot, symbols, melted material, or even molten metal.

Until recently I had no means of editing my first post - I'll probably be updating it when I have a free moment.
In short, I'm willing to do anything that strikes my fancy, that I think I'm capable of, and that won't compromise the integrity of the hilt.
I've done a lot of hilts at this point, dozens, some of which I don't post here.

It's always encouraged to just message me and ask. If I can't do it I'll tell you. If I think I can do it, but have never attempted it I'll tell you.
A lot of these customs were experiments.

Dremel tool, familiarity with various paints, and lots of practice - that's really what it comes down to.

I've found that, from a durability standpoint, enamel is generally the best bet.
Some acrylic is ok, but it can chip off the aluminum if not applied properly.

I've never bothered with oil because the dry time is silly.

I always am working on something - for reference I currently have 7 hilts sitting on my work station.

How long a project takes depends on how many simultaneous projects I have going on and how much free time I have.
Turnaround is usually around 2 weeks.

Thanks for this picture, that is SICK as always! I love it! Not specifically what I'd be looking for, but it is great to see a little teaser of what could be. Mine is a Dark Catalyst; i've noticed you say the black is a pain to work with apposed to the standard.

The black anodized finish is just designed to not come off and to protect the hilt.
It's not so much a pain, more the fact that it just requires extra labor steps on my part to get it to a good weathering.
Totally doable as you can probably see from my other customs.

I just prefer standard finishes because it gives me total control.

Well it was the Aeon V3 but I changed my mind and can't decide between a Liberator or a Dark Liberator in violet amethyst with sound.

If you're going with VA I'd suggest the Dark Libby! But if you're sending in to Drahcir, I'd go with the regular libby as the silver hilts are easier for him to work on (?)

I've admittedly been considering a Daredevil billy club saber.

That would be awesome! That Manticore does look a little DareDevilish! You do great work Drahcir! I missed out on your give away! I was a day short of the beginning cut-off... Entered the forum on Jan. 20th! But its all good someone is going to be very lucky!! Good luck to you all! It looks like an awesome saber!

Depending on what you had in mind, Sedsti might be a better person for that job - particularly if you're not wanting it beat up looking.
PM me your idea and your price range. If I think it's something I want to take on I'll let you know, if I think it's better suited for Sedsti I'll point you in his direction.

I have just received my lightsaber from Drahcir & am more than pleased.
The entire experience was a very pleasant one as he was very responsive to all of my messages & was proactive to update me on the process.
We were able to create a good statement of work prior to the engagement & in my opinion made everything smooth!
I received my saber back very close to the way in envisioned it & before my desired date.
He has my stamp of approval!

Hey Drach,

A couple questions for you with regards to your awesome design services.
Have you experimented much with augmenting the color of a hilt in any way?  As in, actually changing the color?
If so, with your extensive knowledge of hilts, do you think the Azure Reaper or the Silver colored hilts would be easier if you were to attempt to outright change the color to say something like a deep purple?

I was the one that had the blood splatter added to my hilt and it was one of the best decisions I have made when it came to having my hilt weathered by Drahcir it turned out amazing. Pictures really don't do it justice!

Drahcir I see you have been doing amazing work like usual keep up the good work man I have an idea in the works I might have you weather it too.

My computer fries I come back later and see more and more pages of awesome sabers weathered by Drahcir if you haven't had your hilt weathered by him I will say it was money well spent every time I pull out my saber I get a lot of comments on the weathering.

Little update:

As the new movie and holidays approach I might be a bit more busy than usual - I am however still taking work unlike last year.
Do plan for a little extra time for things to get done, however.

Cheers!

Hello - I am new to the Forums but I saw your weathering work and absolutely fell in love with it. I know it's the holidays and I assume you are super busy but I had a business inquiry. I was wondering if you could p.m me a price estimate on a project. This project can wait until well after the holidays or whenever you have the time. Here's what I have in mind

( subject to change, if needed we should talk it out, I trust your work )

Saber: Manticore with Obsidian LITE sound and a Bellicose pommel

What I was thinking:
- tarnished steel type color weathering with scuffs and scratches
- added strips of 'laced' pattern cloth or other material on the mid grip / this material also under the emitter

Here's the big one and was interested and wondering if you would like to do this.
- etched wording of the phrases "Ashes To Ashes" (Above the grip) and "Dust To Dust" (Below the grip)

Thank you for taking the time to read this. PM me or reply to this when you get the chance, I understand you're busy. Happy holidays :D

Wow!! You are an artist my friend  :o
I love all of your work! The "cracked hilt" effect (not sure what you label that) where the light shines through hole in the middle of the crack, as if it happened during battle or life or death duel, is my favorite of all the different weathering and damage effects that you have displayed.
The MUSTAFAR HILT is so freakin' cool brother!
Like I said.....you are an artist.

Hey Drahcir. Your work is phenomenal. I am very new to the ultrasabers community (haven't even gotten myself a saber yet) so for this topic to be my first social post/reply may seem like a bit of a jump on the gun. However I love what you're doing and I can definitely see myself sending you a hilt. I've already got a couple ideas for customization for you..

I absolutely love the personality your customizations bring. I really like the aged leather wrap that's trailing from a few of the later designs. It makes you think of a quick fix that needed to be made for a battle of recent history. Gives the weapons more of a look that makes you believe there's quite a story behind it.

How I would imagine Vader's saber would look, maybe worse than this.

I just wanted to thank you for posting all the stuff you do. I was inspired by your work and decided to age my first and only saber a day after I got it. It came as artic blue I also learned how to solder to change the color. But I don't think I would have done it if it was not for this thread. I'm looking to try a leather wrap also on this but I'm still not great at it but I'm practicing!

And to the question above, how long it takes me varies.
Could be as little as a week or as much as month - just depends how busy life is.

Just revisited this thread... am continuously amazed by Drahcir's creativity and customization skill.  Each saber has it's own story to tell... even the Aeon v4 and DSI pairs that are part of different staffs.  The details are awe inspiring for anyone who likes to customize their sabers.  A truly unique way to make that saber your own... even if it's just a minor change.

It's been a few months... we are ready and anticipating more of your artistry.  :D

point  8)     hmm... a mostly lightsider of the green blade with dark side points  ;)

Late reply, but yes. I've thought about doing work on just about all designs lol.
I don't own a crossguard myself though, so unless someone wants me to, it's probably not in the cards currently.

What can you do? 1 is silver 1 black and they both equal my staff. What is the process area sorry maybe I should read more into the thread if I missed answers

No, Infinit, you know better than that. You’re a Marine. Is it not true that professional soldiers and warriors are taught to keep their main weapon, essentially and extension of their own person, and the main means of defending their life, exceptionally clean, and in reliable, good working order? All the soldiers I’ve ever known, and I’ve known many, keep their weapons super clean. I’d imagine a Sith with his/her eyes on becoming a master would have that weapon ready for an at-the-moment spontaneous kill always.

when I think about something like that, I imagine people like Palpatine and Plagueis would be the type of people who keep their weapons pristine. people like Vader and Maul on the other hand, not so much.

It’s funny, in my mind it’s the exact opposite. I see the “boots on the ground” type guys relying more heavily on their weapons day to day functionality than the higher up’s. But who’s to say! It’s fun to imagine!!!

You have a point. the reason I said what I did was because I was more looking at personalities. Plagueis and Palps seem like calm(ish) and levelheaded(ish) people who would take care of their weapons.
Maul, on the other hand, is the kind of person who probably wouldn't care what his weapon looked like as long as it did its job.

Agreed, the Grand Iquisitor's dual saber that Maul converted in Rebels looks more his style since it's beat up, dirty, and is broken.

Ha - the never ending debate about who's sabers would likely be weathered.
In my mind all sabers should have degree of weathering - how severe is highly dependent on the individual though.

But anyway - Hi everyone!
I've been sick and a little less active as of late because of it.

I likely won't be taking on many new projects until January as the holidays approach.
If you have a special circumstance (i.e. Christmas present type stuff) feel free to message me on a first come, first serve basis.
Otherwise, I hope you all are doing well!

I'm going to post this as a separate topic, but can you customize aluminum on the Spectre?

Specifically, I want to:
A) Grind (then polish) the tsuba to that it is only a ring. No tsuba really.
B) The emitter, had pointy corners.  I prefer something more rounded like the Chosen One or (maybe???) the Fulcrum.

Can you do this?
