Title: A couple of Obsidian queries
Post by: Wobbywoo on December 27, 2016, 01:33:43 PM
Hey there,
So over the Christmas hols I got some money and I've been thinking about what to do with it. I've got a couple of ideas in mind and one of them (obviously!) is that I could buy an Obsidian board to add sound to the Gallifreyan Destiny (my in-progress Doctor Who mashup saber, for those who don't already know). I have two queries which I'm hoping some of you will be able to answer.
Firstly, I've basically already got a working lightsaber, it just doesn't have sound. It's powered by standard AAA batteries (ie NOT Li-Ion). Now, I live over the pond, so I won't be able to buy any Li-Ion batteries from Ultrasabers to power it - are they really absolutely 100% required, or can I get away with the standard batteries I'm already using?
Secondly, I don't have FOC in the LED module that I'm using and I don't particularly want the blade to just flicker on and off. When I'm wiring it up should I connect the two wires in question or insulate them to stop them shorting?
Thanks,
Wobbywoo

First: For the Obsidian sound board, Li-Ion batteries are absolutely mandatory! Your saber won't work properly with standard AA batteries!

Second: I'd insulate them if you can't remove (i.e. cut) them.

One more question (I should probably create another thread for this but oh well) - what voltage/ampage does the battery need to power the v4 board?
Thanks  ;D

I think it's the same as for the v3 board - at least 5V to power both the LED and the board. That's why US uses the 7.4V Li-Ion setup because it can provide the voltage needed.
