Title: Art Project: Wood + Graflex SE :)
Post by: sllikskills on January 08, 2017, 10:57:37 AM
What's up guys!

Thought I'd post this - it's a project that I have just started, and got my inspiration from the Ultrasabers Graflex SE

Combining two of my favorite hobbies, I thought it would be a great/challenging idea to execute a full scale replica of Luke/Anakins saber AKA the Graflex - IN WOOD!

However, not just your typical.... chiseled out, non-functional saber. I want to create a Wooden Graflex that:
1) uses all of the metal pieces (clamp, bunny ears, thumb screws) and the rubber grips. Meaning that ONLY the hilt tube itself is wood
2) is fully functional, meaning it will have both light and sound, duel-able, and re-chargeable

I'm still at a very early stage in this project. I just spent the last 4 hours or so just slowly creating the shape of the Graflex. Check picture below! Notice that I have already drawn on all the locations of the holes and screw areas on the blade that I will be cutting out later. I've also hollowed out the hilt completely so I can insert the stainless steel tube inside. Once carefully glued to the inside of the hilt, this will completely reinforce the wooden hilt, making it strong and sturdy for dueling.

A lot more progress to come! Please let me know your thoughts, or possible considerations for improvement.

As for the soundcard, obviously I'm thinking of the Obsidian

Enjoy!

Really cool idea!

The inner tube should keep the blade retention screw in place, too, so that's a nice way to make a duel-capable wooden saber ;D

Thanks Greywolf! I'm very excited and will be getting more done today

A couple of updates during my NFL football break

In this pic, you can see the copper housing sticking out. Once I sand the hilt down a little more, it should sit right in the tube above the LED's. This tube will be housing the blade.

More progress! I've got the main inner tube to successfully fit inside the entire hilt!  Next step will be to start drilling out the holes where the electrical pins and buttons will be sitting. The Graflex look is really starting to show itself  ;D ;D

Purchased Obsidian Soundcard and the proper LEDs for Arctic Blue, as well as a battery/speaker unit. They are currently on its way over to my doorstep

I've also got the grips and the clamp on its way over from a seperate vendor

Cheers!

That is so cool. I love the idea of using the wood. Heck points for hollowing out those pieces so well. That alone is a task in it's self. Can't wait to see how this progresses.

Thanks Hansrad  ;D

You're absolutely right, hollowing out those pieces took the better parts of two consecutive days. Thanks for the point!

Final updates for the day...

Top and bottom halves of the Graflex hilt are not perfectly sized down to the correct measurement, and the inner support tube has also been cut. I've also cut out the Graflex clamp rivets on both halves. Didn't have enough time to drill out the thumb screw and electrical pin holes yet. Probably will tomorrow. Hopefully the electronics will arrive soon.

Good craftsmanship, it will be interesting to see the result!

By the way, your tablet screen displaying the lego movie made sure I'll be humming "everything is awesome" for the rest of the day  ;D

SOME UPDATES!

Had some time to get stuff done today, though not as much as I will be getting done tomorrow.

Took some time on getting some pvc and working it down to perfectly fit the copper blade holder piece.

This is how it looks installed in the hilt. Will have to make further modifications  to the pieces before I actually install this in it. But yay it fits snug

Next step, started getting these beautiful thumb screw and electrical pin ports on the hilt completed.

Oh yeahhh - the iconic thumb screw looking awesome on the base hilt. This is the moment in every Graflex builder's path where one must decide whether to go The Force Awakens, or go Empire Strikes Back  :o :o :o

I'll go with The Force Awakens  :P
Once the grips and the clamp arrive, this thing will start to come to life. Til then, I just gotta worry about staining the wood, and then adding lots of protection to it. I'm thinking about a layer of epoxy to make sure that wood will be as hard as a rock. Will be tough to apply smoothly though

My mess of a workstation, however STILL not messy enough to overshadow the beauty of the Graflex silhouette. SO EXCITED

Have a great Wednesday guys, ttyl

Looking forward to seeing the finished project. Very cool so far. Have you ever heard of a "Massey Finish"? It's an epoxy and acetone mix that some wood arrow builders use. Google should provide plenty of help, but I think it's basically 2 parts epoxy and 1 part acetone. Might go on easier than straight epoxy and is supposed to be very near indestructible. Just a thought that popped into my head.

Dude! Thank you! Take a point. I wasn't sure so I gave you a light point. I will be looking this up. Definitely the type of advice I hope to get from this thread. Thanks!

More Updates!

Created Pommel Cap for Hilt -began to carve the "Graflex 3 Cell" into the cap but wasn't to impressed with the way it was coming out. Once the stain is dried, I'm going to use some acrylic paint to touch up the cap and really make that more like the original.

Finally finished off the rest of the holes of the hilt. Never really realized how many different holes are on this hilt shroud til I actually had to make them one by one lol. I've also drilled out all the 7 holes for the A New Hope T-track pattern. YEAH I SAID IT - I changed my mind! I will be going down the ANH route! Only difference structurally is the amount of grips, and clamp card. The buttons are the same between the two pretty much. I believe the ESB version has the red button thumb screws on both sides.
The square holes were so much harder to do than the circles lol.

BIG STEP!
I've applied Shellac on the inside of the hilt, and some nice oil base stain on the exterior - I absolutely love the color. It will start to look more amber when the finish is applied - it's gonna look even better after that's done. But already the hilt is starting to come together.

Tomorrow, I will be epoxying the tubes and supports inside of the hilt, as well as epoxying the entire hilt!! Once that is done, it's going to take a few days to cure, but when it's fully cured, it will be ready to accept the chassis and electronics!

Cant wait for my Graflex SE to arrive from Ultrasabers. It will be nice to have something in hand to compare to, since I don't own one currently.

will post some more updates later 8)

Wow, this is an awesome project!
its funny, I talked with someone not too long ago about best ways to create a wooden hilt, and you have gone down that exact path. :)

It's really turning out amazing!

RevanReborn, Corwyn VonBeck, Lord Sidius! Thanks for all the props! It keeps me going!

Latest Update:

I've brushed on 2 coats of high grade epoxy and it's almost been 15 hours. Waiting for it to cure to a full solid, then I'm going to spray about 3 or 4 coats of poly and then the hilt will be ready for electronics!!!!!

I've already found the soundfonts that I want to use. Since it's the Graflex from A New Hope, so many options!

More updates to come soon guys

A real MacGuvyer solution to suspend the pieces to make sure the epoxy wont touch anything lol

Here you can see that nice reflective protection layer that epoxy provides. Cant wait to hold it after fully drying. It should be rock solid

Title: Re: Art Project: Wood + Graflex SE :)

More updates!

The epoxy dried and it is silky smooth. I scratched it up and hung it upside down in the opposite direction it was held when it was brushed with epoxy to even out the coating vertically. Right now it's on its 3rd coat of polyurethane spray.

Ended up putting 5 coats of polyurethane on top of the 2 coats of epoxy. This hilt is really freaking strong now. I think it will stand the test of time easily. In this gif, it's fully cured and feels so smooth to the touch. Almost ready for electronics!! My soundboard and LED should be arriving tomorrow.

Now that the hilt is finally finished, I'm adding in the copper bladeholder and and epoxying it to the inside of the tube. I put in a wooden blade to make sure that the blade is coming out directly straight from the hilt, and not skewed or off center (that would SUCK!) I'm just waiting for the epoxy to fully dry now, which should be sometime soon!

Will have more updates once it dries!

ALRIGHT GUYS!

The blade holder has dried up, and I've proceeded to add the electrical pins and finish the hilt by tap threading the screws for the set screw and the thumb screws! She's ready for electronics!!!!

Here are some final pics before I leave for vacation. I'll be back sooner than later and should have all the parts ready to finish this project. Of course I still need the Graflex clamp and bunny ears to complete the saber, but they are currently being made!

Enjoy the pics guys, I'm so glad I got this done before leaving

Check out that nice sheen from all the protective layers - this hilt will hold up to some serious beating

With the thumb screw and electrical pins installed, the iconic look of the Graflex is starting to peak through!! Can't wait for the bunny ears, grips, and clamp

Thank you Niels, Corwyn, Hansrad, and MavRick!!! This project has been on my mind night and day since I have been overseas on my business trip. I'm so glad to have seen these comments on the rare occasion that I can check up on the forum. I cannot wait to get back and finish this project up. It's turned out so well so far, I'm quite excited as well to see if I gots what it takes to complete this beauty

I'm back from the trip!!!

Still suffering from some mild jetlag, however that couldn't stop my enthusiasm to get more progress done. Especially since I came back home to some key parts to complete the project. I've put in a few more hours, and boy do I have some pictures to show yall!!

EXTERNAL IS COMPLETE!!!! Take a look at these awesome pics below.

With the second thumb screw, the bunny ears, the clamp, and grips arriving, this saber morphed into the iconic A New Hope Graflex right before my very eye. Looks even better in person than what I had imagined in my mind before even getting started. Who's cutting the damn onions?!!  :'( :'(

I've finally received more Graflex models to use as a comparison. Of course you can see the absolutely stunning Ultrasabers Graflex SE right next to my creation. The order from left to right in movie models are : A New Hope (wood), Return of the Sith (Ultrasabers), Empire Strikes Back (Other Brand Replica).

Another angle. Obv the Replica ESB version needs the most work. I just can't believe how awesome the wood came out. And the hilt is so sturdy. Cannot wait to fully install the electronics in it!!

So excited to complete this. I have all the chassis parts here, just need to work on putting them together. And still stuck on some resistor questions. But I think it should all be downhill from here!

Will keep you guys updated

Whoa!!

So happy to see some replies. I've been out the game for a few months due to work/my brothers wedding/preparing for San Diego Comic Con - but hopefully I can install the electronics and have this saber ready for SDCC in July! Thanks for all the support guys, really gives me a second wind to get this saber finished up - it's been sitting in my office cubicle for like two months naked with no electronics just to stare at, and now I think I finally have that motivation to bring this bad boy home and get it all wired up. Will definitely post pictures when it's all finished and keep this thread alive!! Will also post some pics of it in Comic Con. I'm sure that there will be a lot of lightsabers there, and more specifically - a lot of Graflexes there, but I know this one will be turning heads  ;D

Also forgot to mention.

Funny story about Gungi's lightsaber, Nathanielreykun. When I started this project I had thought that no one canonically had a wooden lightsaber and the thought appealed to me because I'm a part time woodworker. It wasn't until one of the final steps of finishing up the wood Graflex when I was sitting in my garage with my iPad on Netflix watching the Ahsoka episode where she shows the younglings how to create a lightsaber, and Gungi's lightsaber scene showed up literally the same moment I threaded the last screw to the Graflex. A bit of irony there.

One good thing for you though, is that if you search around, I have seen someone make a super impressively accurate looking Gungi saber before. Not on this forum, but I have seen it. Look it up!

And yeah, I've seen quite a few of those. My personal plan is to purchase a Catalyst and modify it so it looks like Gungi's both inside and out.

This is a beautiful unique saber !  When the electronics are completed, you might consider placing photos in the Saber Gallery Section.  Did you mention what kind of wood that you have used ?  Graflex collectors are going to be so envious.  ;)

So glad to see all the love for this build. Gives me SUCH a sense of satisfaction.

Taegin! MavRick! Dauntless! Names I haven't seen in a while but so excited to hear from. Crazy how life can get so busy sometimes that it grasps you and pulls you away from the things you love to do. I went from spending like a thousand dollars in my first month of stepping into the world of lightsabers, to winning the Emerald prize that same month, to even starting to build this lightsaber in the same month and meeting all you cool people online, to then all of a sudden a huge business trip, my brothers wedding, and back to back DJing, which led to my lightsabers all stuffed under my bed collecting dust, only taking them out to make sure that I'm keeping the batteries charged, then putting them back.

But as soon as I logged back in and saw some of these comments, the bug hit me full force again, and not only did I go ahead an wipe off the dust on all my sabers, but I wiped off the dust on the lightsaber passion (I know, corny.) Guess that's how you know if you got a really good hobby or not  ::)

Sorry for the rant ;D but...

I'M BACCK!!!!!

SLLIKSKILLS IS BACK BABYYY!!!!!

Nathanielreykun,

Let me know if you need any pointers or help! It'll bring me joy if I can save some one from a mistake or two, because trust me - I've made all of the mistakes in the book at one point or another!

Dauntless,

That's a good idea. I actually just realized that I also completed an install of the Lost Gray - I never posted it. I should do that too . Thanks for the reminder. As for the wood used, I tried a few - I originally wanted to use Cocobolo cause it's awesome grain pattern. But I ended up screwing that up completely LOL. Ended up buying a wood dowel on ebay that was already the proper 1.5" in diameter. They just said "hardwood dowel" so not exactly sure what species it is

As for Graflex enthusiasts, guilty as charged! You're looking at one  ;D
I am totally a sucker for Graflexes, I personally have four (including this build and the plastic hasbro one) but also an ultrasabers SE, and an actual Graflex prop.

I somehow managed to score Thursday and Sunday badges for San Diego Comic Con, so I am going to try to finish this up so I can bring it with me fully installed! It's going to turn heads!! Will make sure to post some pictures of this bad boy at the Con. You're right Graflex peeps will be in awe.

ALRIGHT NOW TIME FOR SOME UPDATES

I've been going Gung Ho on this ever since I logged back in and saw some buzz around the post! Can't wait to finish her up, and at this rate, I should be done this week!

Here are some awesome pics to look at:

Trying to figure out which order of the pieces should go together to fit inside the hilt the best - This Graflex will have a crystal chamber with a UV light as well !!

Decided to go with a Tri Cree custom: Royal Blue/Blue/White for this one. The darker blue will contrast really well with the bright colored wood stain for an awesome look (I hope). Soldering it was a pain, but it's all done!

Still trying to figure out how I want to mount the led module to the rest of the chassis, but probably just going to end up using a healthy amount of epoxy. Only downside is, if an led burns out or a wire disconnects, there won't really be a good way to dissassemble the chassis once epoxy is involved heheh. Oh well, go hard or go home
(http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h477/sllikskills1/IMG_6056.jpg)

And finally, a nice shot of the chassis and the hilt side by side. As you can see, I'm already charging up the battery, CANT WAIT!!

Only thing left that has been a real headscratcher is how I'm going to integrate the switch into the hilt. Will definitely require some finesse, but I've gone too far to stop at this step! Time to get'errr doonneee!

Be ready for some awesome pictures soon guys

Taegin! MavRick! Dauntless! Names I haven't seen in a while but so excited to hear from. Crazy how life can get so busy sometimes that it grasps you and pulls you away from the things you love to do.

I know, just with work alone, I almost don't have time to get on. Plus all my other activities. Still, glad to see you back around.

You are slowly killing me with anticipation for this awesome Graflex !  Now is not the time to screw up ( lol ) so if you are not sure I'd suggest that you first contact JediXIX and/or Revan Reborn ( our Graflex and cram-fu expert ) for some specific feedback/assistance.  Also as said before I love your saber collection and you have just fairly recently found this addiction !  :o

It's 3AM in the morning right now where I'm at, and even though I have a full day of work tomorrow (err today I mean), I just couldn't stop working on the Graflex :P

Well I'm absolutely spent right now trying to type out this update post for yall, but it's a really special post and one I know you all have been waiting for. Just a heads up warning, this post will be picture-heavy

Let's get started!

Ordered some new momentary switches that are even smaller than what I had expected - these are microscopic!! PERFECT!

With the LED module completely epoxied to the chassis rods and secured very tightly, it was all downhill from there! Started soldering all the connections up, trying to be as precise as possible with all the solder points to prevent any shorting. Probably my best solder work as of yet (with lots more to learn!)

Another side shot of the chassis. Double measured the length on the digital caliper to make sure that it will fit snuggly into the Graflex hilt.

Tested the chassis electronics and BOY was this a magical moment. So many hours put into assembling the electronics, pressing that switch is just that leap of faith moment where you have your fingers crossed
(http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h477/sllikskills1/IMG_6094.jpg)

Here is a shot of the chassis inside of the Graflex hilt. You can see that tri cree in there - this saber will be bright!

Thanks to a little bit of creativity and finesse (and coffee), I was able to get the switch to fit beautiful right behind the bubble strip of the Graflex clamp. I will also at some point be securing this to a specific bubble, so that the bubble itself will be the button to ignite the saber.

BOOM. IT'S ALIIIIIIIVVVEEEEEEE
(http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h477/sllikskills1/IMG_6097.jpg)

In this next section below, I've taken some comparison photos of the finished wooden Graflex with my other Graflex models:

A side by side shot of the wooden Graflex compared to the Graflex replica. I really gave myself a pat on the back here. The dimensions are perfect.

From left to right:
Left (Ultrasabers Graflex SE) modeled after Anakin's Revenge of the Sith hilt
Middle - Custom Wood Graflex - modeled after Luke's A New Hope hilt
Right - Graflex Replica - modeled after Luke's Empire Strikes Back hilt
The only one left that I need is Rey's The Force Awakens hilt, then the graflex collection will be complete!

Fifth Angle:

The blade plug for the wooden graflex was far less transparent than the Ultrasabers blade plug - but you can see the color difference between the blues:

This is probably my favorite picture. I'm so glad I went with the mix of Royal Blue/Blue/White for the wooden Graflex. The color is very unique and contrasts well with the light colors of the wood. It looks so different than the aqua color of the Ultrasabers Graflex.

Second angle:

I'm drooling...

And for good measure, a final standalone shot.

I promised a lot of pictures for you guys and I hope I delivered on that. I'm so happy with the outcome of the work I put into this lightsaber, and looking through this whole thread starting from January, it almost brings a tear to my eye looking at the progress made throughout. To be honest I'm so tired right now, none of the excitement has hit me yet. I was literally nodding off while trying to finish up this post lol. But waking up tomorrow and walking downstairs to see the completed Graflex is when excitement will start to sink in  ;D  ;D  ;D

I need to take this time to say thanks to everyone here who encouraged me to keep going. Without all the support and love from you guys, I don't know if this project would have ever been completed. And I really mean that. Special thanks to Ultrasabers for giving me my first Graflex which started the craze in the first place. I cannot wait to bring this to San Diego Comic Con and have a lightsaber I know will be one of a kind in a place where there will be tens of thousands of lightsabers. I also cannot wait to get started on whatever project comes next. I will be sure to post some pictures of my SDCC experience and specifically with this Graflex!

Is there a limit to the amount of points one can give? I guess you'll have to settle for one right now. ;)
But seriously, this looks FABULOUS.

Hey, can we get you to rehost at least the final products on something other than photobucket and repost them?
