Title: Staff Ideas
Post by: Jedihunter214 on January 11, 2017, 04:38:04 AM
Hey everyone, JH here I am taking this very serious. I am wanting a staff, but I want everyones input. I wrote about the Menace as a staff but I am having second thoughts, I want to hear what you would think would make a great staff and why. This way it can help make up my mind, I know each and everyone will have your own thoughts but that is what I am hoping for because this is give me all what I can put together for the staff.

I have 2 stunt Scorpions that made into a staff and I love it.  It is hefty, even as both are stunts but it is my go to saber, as of now.

What are you looking for in a staff?  For show, for spins, or for combat?  Any specific combined hilt length? Are you set on both sabers being the same, or are you open to mix and match?  And why, for the love of Marka Ragnos, do you want a staff?

First, the Menace.  I don't care for it as a staff, mostly due to the multiple knobs.  I tend to slide my hands when using a saberstaff, and they get in the way.  A lot.  I know they can be removed/replaced, but I'd rather get something I don't have to modify to use comfortably.

So, for combat, I recommend Sentinels or Dominix v4s.  They have a large "safe" zone for your hands and don't look half bad.  My personal preference is a pair of Dark Standard Issues (no vertical grooves). Smooth and easy to maneuver with nothing in the way of your hands.  A pair of Liberators also works, with the dips being good indicators of where your hands are on the staff.

For spins, I recommend a pair of Dominix v3s.  The slanted choke points give you a good grip but are still easy to slide your hands along, since there are no right angles at the chokes.

For show, I recommend whatever.  I'd probably do a pair of Dark War Glaives.  Other interesting looks would be the Catalyst, Raven, Crimson Reaper, or for some real fun, the Monarch.  Mix and match can go anywhere, although I've found a Dark War Glaive/Dark Standard Issue look pretty good together.

For Starters, the staff is for my character in my Jedi school as Jedi Sentinel Guard. The staff will be for all three Spins, Show, and Combat. As for the hilt I have two Dark Standard Issued Battle Sabers with Grooves and I love them, but I feel it is way to long for me. Yes, both sabers has to be the same. Personally I have always loved that staff light saber. And for the Saber colors will have to be Yellow.

On this I will have to agree with you on this one.

The Consular with one or both covertec knobs removed (or not) is a pretty cool staff. The hilt is a tad long though (doesn't help that I'm short)

Lots and lots of staves here:  http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=24683.0 (http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=24683.0)

One problem that might arise is the length issue.  Most sabers are around the length of the Dark SI sabers you already have, or longer.  The only sabers I can think of that are notably shorter are:

Initiates, V3 and V4
Apprentices, V4

And, with some extra pieces to replace the emitter, the menace.

I would ask for a little clarification, though.  When you say that your Dark SI sabers are "way too long", is it the hilt length that bothers you or the overall length?  If it's a matter of overall length, just get what hilts you like and get shorter blades.  The most common blade length I've seen for staves is 32", although some go down to 24" (or even shorter, rarely).

Shade, I have both 36" and 32" lengths in blades and they feel way to have and long. Because when I spin and practice I am always hitting the ground. That is what I mean but way to long.

Many of the reviews on staffs I have seen use 24" blades.

I don't see any problem with it. Though the Menace is a very nice hilt and again considering everyone does have their own preferences, but I think you should be fine as long as the blade length is to your height and will cause no problems at all when you're spinning it. I say go all out and do what you want and if you're not satisfied with it, you can always make changes/adjustments to it. I'm sure you won't be disappointed by the outcome. :)

You at first I was thinking about the Menace, but then further reviewing it with all the knobs would make it very difficult for spinning and combat. Don't get me wrong I will always love the Menace because it was handled but Darth Maul who is my favorite character in star wars.

I have used the Force FX version of Maul's, and it isn't that bad, it is a bit heavy, but all of US's sabers are light, so I don't think you'd have a problem with it.

Hmm... I've read somewhere else in the forums that Shock and Manticore are decent options for making a staff.

I personally thought of going for a double Bellicose for a staff but the combined hilt length with an adjustable vented coupler meant that it would be way too long (28" IIRC, if not longer)...throwing off the ratio of hilt to blade. I currently use a double Dominix LE stunts with 32" blades I've cut down to roughly 30" and even then THAT's way too long. (i'm 5'6")...

I'm optiong to go for a double Manticore as my Combat / Cosplay / Performance Staff.... hoping that's shorter with the 30" blades I've shaved down.

I was looking at the Shock LE and like it is a beautiful saber, that would look good as a staff, but you had the covertec wheel which is there i could over look it. I wanting something smoother.

There is one that was just posted a few days ago. Your going to have to dig around a little. Maybe do a search on staffs.
