Title: connecting Obsidian board to Win 10 PC
Post by: Roadhog99 on April 12, 2017, 10:19:25 AM
Hi all,

I've just been trying to connect my new Saber to my computer to upload a sound font for the first time.

Saber has an Obsidian V4.

I can connect to the Emerald card fine, but when I connect to the Obsidian, the PC pings to recognise its connected to a new USB device, but the launcher doesn't register its connected.
I've tried various ways - turn saber on, then start launcher. Connect with saber turned off etc, but nothing seems to make any difference.

So I also tried the same thing on my other US saber, and have the exact same result.

Am I doing something obvious wrong, or could it be a Windows 10 issue (I've also tried running in Win 7 compatibility mode)??

Thanks

Have you tried running the launcher as administrator?  Usually if it is a M$ thing that will fix it, or point you to something else.  If that doesn't work, I would try using a different usb port on your pc.

Hey Roadhog99,

I run Win10 as well, and find that the V4s can be finicky at times.

I have to unplug and re-plug the USB to my tower a few times, occasionally.  Other times, it just sings right through...

It is important to run the software "as admin", like Leefer mentioned, and trying different ports on your tower is often helpful as well.

I ensure that my saber is turned on before I connect it to the PC, and plug in to the board first.

I've also heard, but never encountered deeper issues with Win10, and drivers, but have reached the end of my skillty on this. ;)

Next step is to borrow a friend's laptop and see if it functions then.  That will eliminate your pc from the equation.

Unfortunately Windows is not very good at keeping compatibility throughout versions. When we developed Obsidian, Windows XP was the norm and Windows7 "the new thing". The drivers that worked perfectly fine on Windows7 sometimes behave erratically on Windows10. Here are some things that you could try:
- Run the Launcher as administrator
- Always make sure the board is turned on when you plug in the USB cable
- Make sure the cable is in good condition and fully inserted into the board's USB connector
- Unplug the board, wait 10 seconds then plug it to a different USB port
- Use an USB2 port, not USB3
- Use an USB2 hub if only USB3 is available on your computer
- Disconnect the board, turn it off, turn it on again and reconnect
- Apply a hard reset (that is: take out the batteries, leave the board unpowered for 10 seconds, then power it on again)

Hope that helps.
Marius.

Excellent, Marius. I've found the USB2 ports to be the most consistent solution. USB3 worked maybe 1 out of 10 tries even when running as Administrator. The other suggestions you gave, though, are invaluable, too. Thanks for the help and a point to you.

I am also encountering frustrating issues with the Obsidian v4 and my relatively new Windows 10 and what-I-presume-are-USB 3.0-ports. I have a USB 2.0 hub arriving Monday - Will post an update when conditions warrant.

Here's hoping...

So my USB 2.0 hub arrived. It wasn't helping at all until I started over:

1) I uninstalled the Obsidian Launcher files and re-installed.
2) Turned on the saber, then plugged the card into the USB 2.0 hub.
3) Launched the Obsidian Launcher as an Administrator.
4) Voila! I uploaded pretty painlessly (though it took a while, as it always does). After an upload, the Launcher automatically relaunched, whereas previously it dumped me out of the launcher.

When I connect to my PC, I have to follow this pattern:

1. Have the saber on and the launcher running.
2. Click the "Connect" (or whichever) button on the launcher
3. Plug in the saber
4. Unplug the saber
5. Plug the saber in again

Both need to be "ready" and the first time I connect it ALWAYS fails, but the second time I connect it ALWAYS succeeds.  That's been my experience so far.
