Title: BROOD GUARD SABER??
Post by: TheSilentGhostReaper on November 08, 2017, 10:59:14 PM
Have you guys seen the latest video from Emory?? I just saw the Brood Guard and it looks like a nice saber....  ;D

I was wondering if any of you already bought the brood guard and if so...what do you think of it?

For the people who works for US is there a chance you will "include" that to the Mystery box?

I have not seen the video but I saw the post on Facebook. Personally, it isn't for me.

I'll admit it grew a little on me watching that intro video but I can't see me getting one...yet. Maybe I will wait for some actual reviews. It is funny too note that this was released days before the raffle ended and just over 5 weeks until the movie.

And I am doing fine. lol,

The saber was just released on the site today.  Something tells me not too many people have ordered and gotten theirs yet.

I've exhausted my funds that were allocated for Ultrasabers already with this raffle and sale going on, so I will be waiting to get one until the next time I splurge.  This is definitely high on my want list.

I want to couple it with an initiate v4 and have a double-bladed tonfa.

I just said the same thing after it was brought to my attention in the suggestion thread.

I think I'm gonna pass on this one, seems kinda awkward for me x.x Only more used to standard style sabers

Posted this in the suggestion thread, if you look close at this new hilt, is it just me or is US giving us LED blade retention screws now?

I'm not impressed with them. Tonfa was never a great weapon to begin with, and when combined with lightsaber combat, it becomes even more obsolete. The large handle makes it a big target, and it only takes one bad block to turn the weapon into a paperweight (assuming real saber combat). Sure, if you're up against a knife or and unarmed opponent, this will certainly give you an advantage, but against another lightsaber, you'd be better served with one of your own.

Since everyone here has pretty much said no to the saber, I'll jump in just so that it doesn't look like it is was a terrible idea to release this hilt. I think it looks cool, and the LE version is possibly one of the prettiest sabers I have seen. I definitely want one.

Be interesting to duel both with, and against

Indeed. I feel like if someone wanted to do a Jedi Finn, they could easily use one of these.

I want to see how it is assembled.  The upper stage is almost certainly an Initiate V4 with the handle attached at the pommel point, and another extention beyond with the lower section.
That makes this a three-part saber with some very interesting modification potential.  For example, it has the activation switch in the handle.  What if you modified the handle for a small cross-guard saber?  Or just modded it slightly with some flat pommels (EH for example) and a blade?  Might make a very sweet off-hand saber all its own...

So yeah.  It maybe become VERY popular - but not just as a Brood Guard.   :-)

To me it comes off as 'rare metal', so I liken it to phrik. And IMO this type of weapon would only ever be most effective if the main body were capable of guarding against saber attack instead of just the blade.

And yes, as you can see in my arsenal, I like nickel. ;D

It's just an MHS pommel, not an MHS handle. You could change out what saber is on the end of it if you want to rewire it, and what pommel is on it, but the handle into the end piece looks to be one piece. You can't screw it in, or it would unscrew when you spin it around.

CE doesn't mean nickel plated. It means Collector's Edition.

True. And it isn't even nickel plating but the CE is a nickel finish. So I was 1/3 right.

I am reserving judgement on that.  The upper is EXACTLY like an Initiate V4.  EXACTLY.  The easiest way to assemble something like this would be to screw the existing initiate body to the handle, then screw on the lower extension and pommel.  There is no reason it would come unscrewed when you were spinning it around.  The torque from spinning is on the handle, which is a solid "T".

You wait.  People are going to be buying these and making custom tonfa-style sabers from EVERYTHING, because you'll be able to put that handle on the end of whatever you want - as long as you can re-wire.

I feel your pain. :'( But what else are you speccing? I priced one out with V4 sound and 10%off, and the total came to less than $300.

CE doesn't mean nickel plated. It means Collector's Edition.

I am quite aware of this sad fact. However, the only other example of CE not immediately meaning nickel plated is the Manticore, which has the option of base aluminum or nickel (+$35).

True. And it isn't even nickel plating but the CE is a nickel finish. So I was 1/3 right.
I brought up the nickel plating because someone called it CE, which got my hopes up. The SE is available though.

Honestly is just me or would basing it off of a Dark Shock design be more accurate tan using an Aeon(?) base.

Actually either Shock would work. Good catch. Leave it to the tinkerers. Before too long we'll be seeing mods on these.

But I took a look at an Ini last night, and you wouldn't want to use a 12" hilt on these as the overall length would be pushed out to 18". The blade wouldn't begin until it got past your elbow. Still think the Shock would look awesome.

I'm curious if anyone has played with one of these at a con (if US had them at cons previously) - how do you block an overhead strike or side strike to shoulder?

I agree with Taegan Roan. This is pretty cool. Being a collector, I definitely want to try one out. I love spinning and it looks to me like I could do some badass moves with it. Plus, I just love light sabers all shapes and sizes. To each is there own. Nice work Ultrasabers!

Hi James.  Do you or anyone else recall that one tonfa that was given out perhaps last year or the previous one.  Was all silver and did not look much like the one presently for sale if I am imagining it correctly.  I think that I liked that design better as looked more like a blaster.  Not a fan of this style but will look forward to your awesome review and photos.  :)

I remember it, was about 3 years ago maybe? The winner only posted about one photo, I think :o Shame they didn't share more - just enough to be tantalising! :D

It's an interesting look. The bowed handle looks a little odd to me, given how straight the rest of the hilt is, but I imagine it feels fine in the hand. Hey, I could have it in less than 2 weeks!

I think Lord Bladewraith had the chance to play with on a little at a con. You could try talking to him. He isn't on a ton right now (busy with RL), but he'll probably get back to you.

The handle I was talking about is THE handle which is the countoured section with the switch on it. The other "part" of the tonfa I was talking about is the part screwed to the Initiate.

I think we were just using different terminologies and I thought you meant take the HANDLE off the tonfa section and put it on something else. But you meant the whole tonfa extention. So I was picturing a screw in HANDLE getting tight clockwise and loose counter clockwise while spinning.

OK, just spitballing here, but...

Could an enterprising jedi attach two Brood Guard's together (or a Brood Guard and something like a yari extension or Initiate) to make a saber scythe?

I've seen it done with a Flamberge (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NsT-8v4vhSI), but IMO the perpendicular blade on that makes it look more scythe-like, but function more like a massive war pick (which is still awesome).
Although, now that I think about it and look at some images of scythes, the horizontal blade makes more sense, but the Brood Guard could still be a more scythe-like handle than using the crossguards of a Flamberge.

I don't know, might be a neat addition to saber polearms or just a weird pipe dream on my end. My pipe dreams do tend to involve machined aluminum pipes and LEDs . ;)

I don't think so. The switch is wired through the 90° bend, plus there is no MHS threading along the handle.

However, I have thought about what kind of craziness could ensue by coupling GBs. (Great now we have another meaning for GB to confuse the noobs with. :-\)
