Title: Today marks a new day in my saber adventure.
Post by: tx_tuff on February 27, 2018, 11:59:40 PM
I finally have all my pieces ordered from US and TCSS to build my saber from the ground up so to speak. I'm very excited and a little nervous to get this done.

This will not be a fast process, I'm using chemicals and techniques I have never even knew was around before I started ordering parts for this. This will all get done to the hilt, pommel, and emitter before I even think about the electronics. I will be doing all the soldering and electronics pretty much for the first time. And Monday thru Friday I have zero time to work on this.

So bare with me and when I get the project done I will post many many pictures of during and after. Here are most of the parts just for an idea. It looks like a cool project!  Just wondering if you got a red led or silver one?
I have a DSI ( stunt setup) with a red led and a red day blade that looks pretty good!

Yeah its little low but I think it will be just fine. I didn't want the switch in the grenade section.

OK got some work done today. I clear coated the inside of the two hilt pieces so when I use Aluminum Black and do the acid etching they don't effect the inside of the saber.

Then I prepped the neck, primed, and painted it.

Used the Aluminum Black on the inside of the emitter and the grenade section.

Weathered the pommel and clear coated the inside of the emitter, the neck, and the grenade section.

The black on the outside of the emitter is pin stripping, just using that to mark the blank spots for when I use the acid etching (hopefully next weekend).

So the acid etching and some weathering on the neck and I should be done with everything but the electronics. No this is going to be purely dark side, using a Tri Cree with two red and one white for FOC.

Not really using acid. Will be using P&P blue paper mostly to transfer the design. Using a mixture of Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate Crystals and Lab-Grade Sodium Chloride Crystals.

Hopefully I can get this done next weekend.

Seen this done, works but can be messy. I am working on salt etching a hilt right now, if I ever get around to actually finishing it  ::)

Today was etching day. Had to prep and transfer the design from the P&P paper to the emitter and part of the hilt. The design on the emitter didn't come out good so I cleaned it off and used pin stripping to put a design on it. Then a bath is the solution, clean the solution off with water. Take off all the pin stripping, tape, and cleaning off the P&P transfer and it's good to go. I am extremely happy with the way they both turned out!! The only thing left is all the electronics, hopefully will tackle that tomorrow. The finished hilt is 13 1/2 inches long. Oh yeah also weathered the neck a little. Etching looks fantastic, and I'm a really big fan of that switch, too. Good going, tx.

So I spent the better part of Sunday adding the electronics only to turn it on and end up with an expensive stunt saber :(

I'm pretty sure I probably have a couple bad soldering connections. I had a hell of a time using what I had. So I did some research on flux and solder last night and discovered it makes a big difference out what you use and how you use it.

Ordered some new flux and solder that I think will be much easier to work with and hope to tackle it again this coming weekend. When I finally get everything finished I will start a new thread with pictures and video. Still, that thing is sick! Nicely done. Hopefully you get the sound thing worked out.

Thanks everyone, I'm sure it will get worked out. Have some spare time this coming up weekend so.. Thinking about just gutting it and starting all over (the electronics). May be easier then trouble shooting.

First off Tx sorry to hear about your sound issues  :(

That said, your saber is magnificent!  The etching on it is remarkable, the emitter shroud aggressive and incredible, and the Malice pommel a fantastic choice!

Seriously my friend, what an AWESOME saber!

That is a one of a kind beauty right there.

You're killing it my friend and everyone who does sound installs it seems has similar growing pains.

I wish for you patience for the up coming weekend :)

Thank you Dutch I really appreciate it. It didn't take long for me to fall off the deep end of this saber craze.

Have to admit to having gotten lucky with the sound on my full builds.
But, then, I was using pre-wired cards. Just had to solder wire connections. Nothing direct to the boards

Yeah I know I will get it, have a working wiring diagram and know what I'm supposed to be doing LOL. Was just disappointed in myself that it didn't work the first time. But I'll get it.

It is a big let down when you pull that kill key, and nothing happens...

It's super easy to bridge two pads on a board though too.  My issue was at the speaker pads, but could very easily been on the board.

tx is doing the only thing he can do now...start over. O_o  It totally beats a "band-aid" fix, and is the route I'd be taking too.  So, good on ya tx. :)  -1

New flux and solder will definitely help.  I just went to thinner gauge wire myself - big difference.

So it is fixed, finally decided to take a good look at it today. The main problem I had was using not so great solder. I now have good flux and solder the spots I had to fix were pretty easy. Had a speaker wire that need resoldered, and the white LED. While messing around with everything I went ahead and redone the switch also. Works great now. Going to start a new thread.

No - that's typically the case - for me at least.

"It's not working....oh here's why...DER!"  :P

My last two projects have been - errr - less than spectacular upon pulling the kill key. :P

Just some tweakin'  There's always some tweakin'.

tx has x2 active threads going about the same saber.  The other one is most current and shows the building of the saber in more info/photo customization details including the outcome regarding his sound challenge.  :)

Nothing to be sorry about... just want to make sure that your most current one doesn't get missed or overlooked as that thread has a lot less views.  It's an awesome saber that deserves to be viewed twice.  :D
