Title: My first comic-con
Post by: Dauntless Seven on March 22, 2018, 09:58:51 PM
Hi all.  Last weekend I went to the first annual Victoria Capital City Comic Con.  Was supposed to be as large as the Toronto and Seattle ones.  That I'm not sure about.  Went on Friday... apparently was jammed packed on Saturday when the most action and more special guests arrived.  Expecting 2500+ and got well over 3000.  The good news is that the sponsors have already committed to next year so hope it will be bigger and better.

I have to admit that I don't collect comic books but have read plenty... especially in my youth.  I didn't know many of the comic guests or the celebrities.  Basically I knew of James Marsters who played Spike on Buffy the Vampire Slayer series and Jay Baruchel... some random actor that I last saw in the movie... The End of The World.  Mike Quinn from Star Wars did a puppeteer talk.  A few of the Battlestar Galactica actors.  Graham McTavish from The Hobbit and Outlanders was quite popular.  Wow are the autograph prices ever expensive !!

Didn't know that we have a comic book superhero that goes by the name of Captain Canuck.  There were lots of booths with stuff... loads of Funko Pop.  Not that much SW or lightsaber related other than the 501 and Mando Mercs.  Right by the main door people were getting spur of the moment more simple smaller tattoos.  Thought about it for a second then thank goodness that I did not get caught up in the moment lol.

I had the opportunity to both meet and talk to a lot of really friendly and cosplay knowledgeable persons.  Was told that there were a lot more cosplayers on Sat and Sun.  Can't imagine going as a non-participant to a smaller con for an entire weekend... as the ticket prices for entrance/events would be very costly.  Ultimately one could run out of activities to do.  Enjoyed my one day and would return next year.  Bought a few things such a wooden katana and that cool samuri dog print.  The female BC professional cosplay person gave me some signed pics which was a very nice gesture.  Got some other freebies as well.  :)

Here's some random photos of mainly cosplayers and the 501 booth.  Just need a minute to upload them.  :)

Looks like you had a blast! I remember my first Comic Con, they are comparably addictive to saber collecting... especially if you cosplay. Great pics!

Looks like you had a fun time and that's what it is all about! The best part of the Cons I have been to was the looking at Cosplay.

Thanks Saso, tx and bB.  I would like to go to a really big comic-con perhaps next year.  Without the cosplayers it would be much less exciting to experience.  However it's just not in my comfort level to do this... yet.  :D

It's not about what other people think at all if I'm role-playing a character.  I'm a fairly private person in spite of sometimes placing myself out there as a singer.  Now that is being open and vulnerable to the public opinions.  :)

Nice pics, looks like some great cosplay going on there!  I'm kind of opposite, was a fan of comic books first since I was 3 yrs old LOL since my parents encouraged it as a way to foster a love of reading, then got into other genres based on tv and movies later on.

Cons are fun my wife and I go to the Niagara falls comic con (this is on the good, Canadian, side of the falls. We have done cosplay every year and it is a blast. Have to finish my cheap clone trooper armour for this year, wish it would look as good as that fellow you got a pic of. Also that one lady looks like she is wearing body paint and a smile. Anyways at least where I have been the cosplay people have been fabulous so dress up and get out there.

I have been to 3 comic cons and one Supernatural Con (family) and I have never done any Cosplay. My kids have. But this year at Comicpalooza all of us, me the wife and 3 kids, are doing Cosplay. I'm a little nervous but looking forward to it.

Darn just made a reply and lost it to server connection problems.  Here's the short version.  >:(

Thanks Edon, Xamon, Racona and tx.  I almost was going with Rapine to the Niagara Falls convention in June.  He likes to cosplay.  There are a few other members in the area plus at least one relatively close just over the Ontario border.  Perhaps we could all get together next year.  Please take lots of pics so I can see what was missed this year.  :)

A smaller venue is a bit tougher to break into cosplay as there's just not as much going on and a lot more time for individuals to stare at you lol.  That's how I felt last year at my first con but, it started something in me thats grown and added fun and confidence to be in cosplay.  The con in Calgary is one I'd like to visit, big trip though.  Great share D7 and so nice hearing everyones adventures and stories.

Why the heck am I just seeing this now?

Awesome pics D7. :)

Yes, I've found that one day is more than enough to see everything at a con.  I do recommend the Saturday though. ;)

Prices!  Yeah - Yikes!  Did you happen to see what a celebrity pic is worth?! O_o

I've attended Toronto's con, and that looks very, very similar to it.  Something cool everywhere you look eh? :P  IMO, unless you simply HAVE TO HAVE a specific person's autograph, standing in one of those lines for my entire admission price, isn't really worth it.  I don't personally put much weight on celebrity myself though - they're still just people IMO.

I have to figure out my cons for this year yet...

Great stuff D7. :)  Looking forward to more.  +1

yep, pending on the celeb. you're looking $30- $140 for one sig. I paid $20 for a pro wrestler's (trade bait) being in group is harder, organizing people to show multiple days, in costume, cover the table. Grand Rapids for us is 3 days in a booth, so make some props and make sure we have enough to show off.
again, one con leads to more wanting you at theirs. this weekend added two more to the list 1 Oh. and 1 Mi. con

When I went to my first ever comic con it was in Denver, Colorado and was totally nervous x.x I'm autistic with aspbergers and can't really handle large crowds but once we actually got their I felt right at home :P Plus our cousin was with us so was probably a fun experience for him too. Need to go to another convention during the summer =]

Very nice pics D7. It looks like you had a grand time! If you're in the area, I'm going to try and make it to Visioncon in Branson, MO, Con Nooga in Chattanooga, TN, and Supercon in Louisville, KY in 2018-2019. I want to try and make it to more cons, now that I have a few costumes to work with and love interacting with people at them, especially the kids.

Thanks Master V and everyone else that I haven't thanked yet.  :)  Wish I was going to be in the area as I would really like to go to another con this year.  V... do you recall a few years back when a few of us were casually talking about getting together... perhaps at Disney World or the Las Vegas con ?!  Would be great to attempt to make a more solid plan and commitment for next year.

Your cosplay is going to be so impressive and is really going to be a bonus for any attendee's experience.  The cosplayers were the best part for me.  Have an awesome time and I look forward to seeing your photos... that is if you are not too busy posing and having fun.  :D

I definitely remember those plans and it's sad they fell through. If only going to cons didn't rely on money. I would love to see several forum members appear at a con. I think the problem besides money was trying to find a location that would accommodate several of us.

And yes, seeing all the costumes is one of my favorite things about going to them. If you are still hesitant on cosplaying out in public, I'd recommend doing a cosplay with a mask. That usually will get you out there without people recognizing ou or having to make an impression. You can even remain silent and play the character using body language instead of speaking. Or if you're like me, you don't even have to worry about playing a character and just walk around in costume and take pics with people. There are several ways to ease into it.

The Niagara Falls one is coming up in early June.  Not sure when the Toronto one is held.  Moderator Lord Rapine is the one to get in touch with for all the cons in your area.  :)

Thanks Master V for all your helpful cosplay suggestions.  :)

Yes, NFCC is in a mere couple of weeks.  I have no plans on going this year though.

Toronto has it's own in March, and also holds the nation Fan Expo on Labour Day weekend each year.

I've been to each of the cons twice - pretty awesome.  Never gone to FanEx.

we had comic artists and that was about it.

Hi All,

I got to my first Con last year, only a local one but I got to meet a Doctor Who assistant (ACE) and TWO Bossks! One Bossk was Mr Alan Harris and the other Bossk was a friend of mine who cosplays him. I thought my friend lived in America so you can imagine my surprise when he introduced himself!

But the SW highlight of the day was talking to Mr Harris and discussing acting techniques and Bossk's meeting with Vader on the Star Destroyer. I mentioned that I could see him acting "through" his costume rather than just standing there, especially when he glared down at the Imperial officer. To this Mr Harris replied,
"Yes but you couldn't hear me say this.....HHHHISSSSSSSH!" and he struck the pose, scowled at me and made a lizard like hissing noise! Priceless.

Hoping to meet Tim Rose in June...... but I fear it may be a TRAP!

Hi Dauntless Seven, I got to the Comic Con yesterday and I managed to get the autograph I hoped to get...

Now I have been mentioned by Admiral Ackbar doesn't that make me official Star Wars canon?  ;D
Oh and I came across this guy, Darth Maul and he attacked me with Menace (staff)!

I only had an old cellphone/camera combo so gouldn't get many really good pictures but thought you might like these!

Hi Ty  :)  Thanks for sharing these great photos.  Wow those blades are illuminated !  Love them both and it's so nice to see you in your element.  Yes you are now unofficially part of SW canon.  lol  ;)

awesomeness point   8)

My city con will be at the end of March next year 2019.  Not sure about fair weather at that time for the outside events but will plan to attend on Saturday instead of Friday.  One day should do it.  May have to loan the 501 some sabers as they were sorely lacking... which to me was quite odd and a bit of a let down for the fund raising photos.  :-\

I'm sending you a PM in the next few days or so to catch up.  :)

Thanks D7,

The day was great even for a small 3000 seat arena. I can't believe how well that Maul photo turned out considering my phone but then Princess Leia did take the photo for me!

Hopefully you will get to a con sooner than 2019.
But I always thought the 501st were aimed more towards Troopers than Sith and Jedi? The Princess Leia and Darth Maul I mention come from a big (and well respected)  Trooping group here in the UK and I know Maul and another Sith Lord uses US sabers. The Sith Lord had a Scorpion staff no less, unfortunately I didn't catch the gentleman's name as he had a face mask but is a forum member here.

Will chat in our PM

Hi bigBear,

You're in for a real treat if my meeting with him was anything to judge by. He was funny and the stories he told me were great (I won't repeat them in case he tells them again but one story was how Ackbar really got his names!)
He even complimented me on some of my saber designs I showed him.

Hope you have as good a time as I did.

+1

Glad that you had a great time, it's addicting.  Love comic cons (and anime).  I got to them as much as I can, getting into cosplay, eventually.
