Title: Can I bring my lightsaber to Star Wars Celebration?
Post by: Dano on June 07, 2018, 02:12:09 PM
Hey Everybody,
The 2019 Star Wars celebration will be my first time attending one. I was wondering, from people who have gone before, if you have brought your Ultrasabers with you? In the weapons policy it clearly states that prop weapons can be made of foam and cardboard only. So I cant even have just the hilt of one of my sabers clipped to my belt? If that is the case, what have some of you guys who cosplay at Celebration done?

I have never been to one, and I have no idea what the rules were for past SW Celebrations, but I do know that i have clearly picked out a few Ultrasabers while watching the Live Streams of previous SW Celebrations.

I can't help with specifics either I'm afraid. "Foam and cardboard" is the newer catchphrase that conventions seemed to start using a few years ago. That being said, sometimes lightsabers don't actually qualify as weapons (which is kinda weird, I know) and they are usually referring to actual gun shaped weapons for the foam and cardboard rule. The most ridiculous thing is that there is zero consistency across the board. Each and every convention interprets the rule differently and to make matters even worse, typically the security guard service (guys from a third party company who don't know anything about cosplay) can make the decision on the spot. I've seen security not allow plastic Anime swords into a Con and five security guards down the line someone walks right through with an actual wood baseball bat.

Hope that wasn't too rant-ish, but like I said, anything is possible because of the wild inconsistency. Sometimes you can email the organizer to clarify. It may be worth a shot but even if they give you a thumbs up that could completely change when you try to walk in with your saber hilt.

I don't know how they couldn't. Most lightsabers besides cheap Way-Mart ones are made of metal, normally aluminum. Heck, even the Force FX sabers are aluminum... if they banned them no one would have lightsabers at a SW event and thats just wrong on a fundamental level.

This man speaks the truth. The Phoenix Comic Con prop ban springs to mind.

Exactly.  The venue was smaller, but when "The Force Awakens" came out the local theatre had a big cosplay party before the film.  Several of us showed up in costume with our sabers.  We were asked not to bring the sabers in.

The HILTS were the problem.  Seems a metal hilt is dangerous.  The stupid door guard didn't have a problem with my heavy-grade saber blade because it was made of a polymer.  But the aluminum hilt was verboten.

I offered to demonstrate which was actually more dangerous on a handy watermelon.  He declined the offer.

So we had a massive saber battle in the parking lot and turned the party into a tail-gate.  Then we went in and watched the movie.  I'm afraid we ate to much during our battle, though, so we didn't have any need for snacks, popcorn, or sodas...

Great story, and bummer on not being able to bring them in. A Star Wars tailgate party sounds fantastic!

Thanks for the great responses everyone! Perhaps I will bring them along on the trip to Chicago, go the first day without them to scope it out and then act accordingly. I'll keep everyone posted if I find out specific answers and if you guys hear any talk of it around the forums, feel free to let me know! :)

I am wondering if Ultrasabers will have a booth there... then you can save up to get a saber to celebrate this special event right there in Chicago.  :D

And I didn't disagree with you. There was a reason I bought them immediately.

Yup. Figured don't spend money on multi-day passes before we know that there's too much to do in one day. But yeah, I knew passes were going to go fast, so we decided to get Sat. passes before they even went on sale.
