Title: Favorite Lee filters (so far), Tri AS, standard edge heavy grade blade
Post by: Solstice Lacer on January 10, 2019, 04:07:52 PM
So I got my swatch book of Lee filters yesterday and tried out around 40 of them. Here are some of my favorites:

101 - Yellow (yep just "yellow" lol)

706 - King Fals Lavender
(http://i.imgur.com/OvexGCl.jpg)

738 - Jas Green

354 - Special Steel Blue

323 - Jade

Wow, the yellow and SRD colors are my favorite!  I also like the aqua blue too!

Lee 101 yellow is the absolute BEST!  Far superior to any other SY.   Even with my Emerald driver I could never equal it.    And the others are great!  Point incoming!

Lacer,

A question: were any of these doubled up?  Or were they all just a single layer filter?

These are all single filters. And thanks, I agree it's a great yellow  :)

Yes, thank you!  Love the Jade and special steel blue.  The Lavender is really awesome.  Point for those

Thanks Infinit, the blue/green range seems to have several nice shades. Lavender was a little trickier, I may not have even tried that filter if it weren't for the name and its chromatic placement in the swatch book

Hi Solstice,

Great pics and I have to say out of these I like the Jas Green, King Fals Lavender and the Yellow 101 as my 1,2,3.

I'm not sure but I seem to remember somebody in the community used a filter named Moss which was a nice "fuller" shade of green but still bright.

point on it's way.

You're welcome, Solstice. That's all it's about, just playing around with the filters and seeing which colors you like.

No thank you Solstice for finding the filter and testing it! That picture/colour just took first place in my list.

I'm also pleased you like it and that my memory wasn't playing tricks on me!

Another point on it's way.

For Edon: there are a lot of nice shades in the yellow/orange range. Enough that it becomes difficult to choose between them. They were coming across slightly yellower than real life on my camera, so I tried to color correct to best represent what I see with my eyes. I think if you went with Tri AS and got a filter book you could find your perfect orange. Here's my pick:

105 - Orange (first "yellow" and now "orange". Sometimes simpler is better I guess)

Nice thread SL, for me AS with a swatch book is endless and there isn't a color I can't come very close too. As I say "poor man's emerald driver".  Using them in combo is a great way to get even more.
I never remember the number or colors, I just flip and go until I get the color and cut. I've got a ziploc full of these things, so it's a guessing game most days for me.

So here's a comparison of Lee 101- Yellow and Lee 767 - Oklahoma yellow.

101 is more of a sunshine/butter yellow and 767 is more of a mustard/goldenrod

(You can also see the cool effect of the gold anodized LE windows showing up more orange)

Omaha Yellow!    I remember you well...

That was my original SY filter, but at some point my filters were lost.  I switched to Yellow 101 and honestly I have fallen in love with the buttery yellow color.  :-)   But sometimes I do miss the Omaha gold...

And I am SOOOOO cutting a Dark Lavender 180 filter.  :-)

And sooo curiosity got the better of me, it is Banana Yellow (Apollo Gel AP6200)

An update: having a recharge port, I have often left my saber on for a few hours at a time by my side. I've noticed that after a few weeks now of having my lee 101 yellow in most of the time, the filter has actually faded quite a bit, I assume because of prolonged exposure. :/
Luckily I was able to cut a second 101 filter, and have a few backup yellows as well. I plan to be a bit more cautious of leaving filters in for long periods with the saber on. I don't know if it would happen with other colors but I don't really want to test it :P

Something to consider if anyone is in the same boat

I noticed fade on my darkest filter (indigo, real dark)... three light spots corresponding to the tri-Cree LEDs.

I'm surprised, really. These are gels, meant for stage lighting, etc. A set of puny LEDs shouldn't cause visible fade in such a short time.

I looked into coated glass filters, but I haven't found anything in a one-inch diameter that would fit. Probably the most fade-proof fix.

My Apollo brand filters definitely warp due to the heat of the LEDs but haven't noticed fading of the color yet.  Although I don't leave them on for prolonged times though.  Probably 30 minutes max a couple times a day maybe.

Going to check my yellow one now that has been pretty much in full time in my azure mantis since I got it...and nope the filter is not faded but definitely warped.  Furthermore the warping has no visible effect on color in the blade as far as I can tell.

Also I dont use filters with my tri-crees so that is probably the biggest factor.  This is an interesting consideration you both are bringing up, great heads up warning Solstice and erato! +/- 1 each as appropriate

Short of finding glass filters, the alternative would be just getting full-size gels of one's favorite colors. They're not expensive ($7/ sheet at adorama or B&H) and for their size, they would give a lifetime of 1" diameter saber filters.

I don't think I will be finished researching filters until I try all of them. Even the nearly colorless ones.

Even when knowing color theory, it's hard to tell which filters will be the good ones.

/my Prophecy somehow has been yellow for the last couple of weeks. It just looks that good.

I already see some interesting looking colors. I need to charge up the batteries in my AS sentinel staff to test. It will likely be the saber I end up using for a New Jedi I’ve been working on. Need to decide a saber color for her though. My initial thought was yellow, but I might try a yellow and pale blue, or maybe attempt a viridian green color.

I am partial to "089  Moss Green" and think that would look good, I recommended the filter earlier in this thread. And remember only the most powerful Jedi wielded green sabers (like yours truly  ;) ) Maybe even twin it with the Perfect Lavender colour you liked to do a Jar Kai double wield.

089 Moss Green is indeed nice, and I've grown rather fond of 165 Daylight Blue. There are several nice yellows (101 yellow, 102 light amber, 104 deep amber, 550 ald gold, 643 quarter mustard yellow, 767 oklahoma yellow). Some of them are so similar they are hard to tell apart, but it doesn't hurt to have extra filters

Hi Lady Revan, I would say that Moss Green is a good solid middle green (it is used in the theatre for creating forest colours projected onto scenery) but is still a relatively "bright" colour. Jas Green has a lighter shade and appears "brighter" as it is less saturated. Both colours can be seen in pictures Solstice kindly posted on page one of this thread.

Jade is another green but to my eyes leans a bit more towards blue and looks surprisingly darker than I imagined. Just my thoughts.

Depending on your definition of "silvery", you might like 219 - Florescent Green. It is an aptly named kind of paler green. I don't have a pic handy but I remember finding it interesting

Hi Lady Revan, when I was working as a lighting tech I used to use a photograph album. I used the type that had a sheet of saran wrap style plastic attached to each page. You place the photo on the page then flatten the plastic over to hold it in place.

This worked well as the page was white so you could easily see the colours of each filter sheet /disc and of course you could write on the page itself and add tabs to categorise each colour section.

You might still be able to buy albums like this. Failing that maybe a ring binder/folder with plastic divider pockets would work.

I think I actually have a couple old albums of this type lying around. I'll have to look for them. Thanks for the tips! :D

You're welcome. I was taught by a London West End theatre lighting director (who designed the lighting for Phantom of the Opera) and he used this method. Obviously for larger lamps the sheets were rolled up and stored in cardboard tubes.

Very nice! :D Phantom is my favorite show. My best friend and I do a Leroux style Erik/Christine cosplay, though we've done Webber Version before also. Seen the US Tour several times, the Broadway show, and the Las Vegas Spectacular (won tickets actually for both the Las Vegas and for the 25th Anniversary on Broadway; two tickets both times so best friend came both times also).

For my filters I bought a dollar store binder and several packs of hockey card sheets. These are clear sheets that go into any three ring and have nine pockets on each page so I could slip the identity card in with the filter.

I saw this in another thread on filters, someone had taken a ring binder and had each set of cut filters with its backing sheet that gave name and number and stats in a ziploc bag which was then hole-punched and put into the binder note-book style.  Awesome idea...

Wow everyone is so organized!  I just got mine all jumbled up in a Ziploc bag.  :P

Well whatever works for you.
I was looking on amazon and there are some 1" hole punches for scrap booking and such, I have been thinking of trying one out.

That's cool, I've yet to see the show on the big stage. However I did get to examine the original drawings and scenery schematics for the show as the Designer brought them in for us to look at. They were mindblowing to put it mildly.

I had a friend on another site that tried one these hole punch machines too and she really liked it. The disc edges are really clean and so you can cut holes much closer together saving material (meaning you might squeeze more filter discs from a sheet)

Still liking the AS with filters? I’m getting ready to order two sabers and debating on FO and PO LEDs or going AS with filters.

I do!  For orange/yellow colors I prefer tri-cree AS with filters, the colors tend to be brighter IMO.

I agree, based on an emerald driver vs filters, I prefer tri silver with filters for yellow/orange tones. I don't own any dedicated orange led sabers

What Karmack said. Any light going through any sort of filter will dim slightly so you'll want the brightest setup that you can get

Well I have to wait a few months but I am officially a owner of a AS saber.  I didn’t get the color discs because I want to buy the sample book. Anyone have a link for that? Also did I read that someone uses a 1” hole punch to cut out the discs?

Here (https://shop.leefiltersusa.com/LEE-Swatch-Books_c4.htm) is the link to order the swatch book.  Plaintext for the link... https://shop.leefiltersusa.com/LEE-Swatch-Books_c4.htm

I know I said I would use a 1” circular punch to do that, but I haven’t made it to a craft store yet to buy one, nor have I pawed through my wife’s scrapbooking supplies to see if we already own one.

One thing I've noticed on my Fallen...   It is the first saber I've owned that really had a removable emitter and true MLS module for the LED.  On my other AS sabers (Catalyst, Aeon V4) I've always had to slide the filter into the blade pocket and carefully tamp it down with the blade to seat it against the LED.

But with the Fallen, I can remove the emitter and lay it right there on the LED, then secure it with the emitter.  It also allows me to cut the filter larger (and less regular, LOL) though the 1" circles still work.

Just an observation.   :-)

Oh, good point!  It’s the only one I have with a removable emitter, too, but it’s also the one with the Diamond controller, so... I’ll need to remember this for later purchases.

May have to test this out as well since mine will have a removable emitter
