Title: Jedi costume/cos play
Post by: jillian on May 15, 2019, 08:11:32 PM
Hi. I'm looking to get a Jedi themed costume/cos play just for fun. I'm not looking to win any contests or anything like that... Just something to wear to a comic con and very clearly identify myself as a Jedi. For the record, I've never been to a comic con or done any sort of cos play.

I've kind of narrowed it down to two different ideas, but I'm open to other suggestions:

The first one (https://www.etsy.com/listing/472526629/star-wars-costume-star-wars-tunic-become?ref=shop_home_active_38) is sleeveless, which is much more my style but I worry it's not Jedi enough.

The second one (https://www.etsy.com/listing/507258038/womens-jedi-inspired-robe-set-star-wars?ref=related-1) is more Jedi looking, but also I imagine will be much, much hotter and also seems less feminine.

Either way I'll likely add this utility belt (https://www.etsy.com/listing/205769165/star-wars-obi-wan-kenobi-brown-replica?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=jedi+belt&ref=sr_gallery-1-3&organic_search_click=1).

What do you all think? Any thoughts on color? Like I said, there may be something else out there, too. Feel free to offer suggestions!

well, I say if you think the first one is more your style then go with it. it may not be "traditional" but look at jedi like Quinlan Vos. He definitely was not traditional and nobody got mad at him. Nevermind, everyone got mad at him, just not for what he wore.

I have a outfit from Far Far Away Outfitters and I love it. They have so many styles plus mix and match of you want to. I have full sleeves from them and it isn't too hot. But the robes are a different story. It can get pretty warm, so in the spring or summer I have learned not to wear the robe. My daughter also has a Far Far Away outfit. Here we are last weekend. Usually with sleeveless, arm wraps are worn. It will give it a more Jedi feel and be much cooler if you’re worried about the heat.

I got my tunic and robes from Etsy as well.  I went for the full sleeves but that's what is more in line with the character  :)

With robes:

Without robes:

Ultimately, GF is right: whichever is more your style: wear it like a rock star  ;)

I concur with the majority here... wear what makes you comfortable.

You're right, it's going to be warm.  If you're worried about getting uncomfortably so, but you still want sleeves, then I suggest light layers or, as suggested above, arm wraps, or maybe billowy, vented sleeves.  To me, both the costumes linked above looked very nice.

The first one is maybe a little less traditional being sleeveless but if that's what you're starting to lean towards then go for it. As someone mentioned, arm wraps are Awesome, I don't believe any Canon characters ever had them and that's totally their loss. They add a ton of style to the overall look and are very combat-ready looking. You'll appear as a Jedi who means business if you opt to go for them.

The second option is really the basic Jedi garb worn by many male/female characters in the universe. You are correct in assuming it will be much hotter to wear. Trying not to nitpick, but any shade of red including burgundy is usually not touched by Jedi because of Dark Side connotations. Of course if that's the flavor you're going for then that would work.

The belt is a solid choice, I believe I have the same one and it is very accurate to what you'd see on-screen.

Utterly shameless plug that I hope is somewhat relevant:

If you feel a little crafty, in my signature are two links on how to make both Jedi food capsules and Jedi pouches. Both can be bought, but it's a hundred times cheaper to make your own.

Rey is sleeveless with armwraps. There are others too, but she is the first to come to mind

Myself, I'd go with either comfort or possible character concept
My own Sith Warrior look is very loosely based on a character I used in Star Wars the Old Republic.

Myself, I like the sleeveless look. Mainly for its uniqueness, I'll admit

Thanks for the responses, everyone! All of these costumes looks really great.

Good to note the reddish color, I hadn't considered that but obviously in hind-site it's clear.

I love the idea of the arm-wraps, too! That would really bring it all together.

Thanks also for the review/pics of Far Far Away Outfitters.

Points all around :)

Some of "Far Far Away Outfitters" in action. My outfit (the blue) and the MCs (green and tan) both come from them. The MC has hooded sleeveless too with arm wraps, so you can see, I think the wraps came from somewhere else though

I think either one will look like a Jedi. Especially with a saber hanging on your belt.

the heat problem likely depends on fabric, synthetics seem to trap heat more. Does it say on Etsy what they used?

Also consider your pants, leggings, breeches and pockets/pouches or purse-like thing.

And footwear.

Lady Revan, great video! That is exactly what I'd love to do with my saber and costume. It looks like a ton of fun.

Also those costumes look perfect. Thanks so much for sharing. :)

Thanks! I’m glad I could help out :D if you want really good fabric, the ones for Far Far Away Outfitters that aren’t marked as “microfiber” are great texture and weight. I love the “natural” but that one is hand wash only, sadly :( I think my next one from them I’m going to get all Natural pieces and hand dye though. Also a heads up, their Obis are HUGE... like 8 feet huge, so you’ll likely have to cut it.

Yeah I noticed that before. I have a grey obi and pants. Also have a grey robe too but it gets pretty warm.

I went with the natural/white and charcoal. I really wanted something with color, but I just couldn't commit. As you mentioned, any red/orange hues were out b/c Sith. Then I was thinking purple, but with my consular saber I felt it would I look too much like a Joker Jedi. And I want to get an amethyst saber next, so if I went with green I'd end up with the same problem.

So in the end... charcoal matches everything.  :)

Although the price is nice, if I'm not mistaken, that is the belt I currently have (only the black version), and it's not good at it's job. :(

Good question. My wife is looking at an outfit from FFAO (the no sleeve one) and belts are a topic now, FFAO's looks simpler and not a fan of pleather.

I expect these outfits to be worn with an obi, so the belt shouldn't be responsibile for preventing a core breach, just holding a light saber and pouch, right?

If you want a sturdy belt that will hold some items, but don't want to splurge on a full-grade rigger's belt, try this: https://www.amazon.com/Spec-Ops-Brand-Better-Coyote-Regular/dp/B004WA8MC2/ref=sr_1_fkmrnull_1?keywords=spec-ops%2Bbetter%2Bbdu%2Bbelt%2Bcoyote%2Bbrown&qid=1558375818&s=gateway&sr=8-1-fkmrnull&th=1&psc=1 (https://www.amazon.com/Spec-Ops-Brand-Better-Coyote-Regular/dp/B004WA8MC2/ref=sr_1_fkmrnull_1?keywords=spec-ops%2Bbetter%2Bbdu%2Bbelt%2Bcoyote%2Bbrown&qid=1558375818&s=gateway&sr=8-1-fkmrnull&th=1&psc=1)

I have several of the black ones, in various sizes (thanks, life, for the size changes) and widths.  They're sturdy, they are secure, and if you're of a mind to crank down on them, the buckle will hold without slipping.

I'm saying that it doesn't function well as a utility belt. However, if you don't plan on clipping anything heavier than an ounce, you should be alright.

I'm also going to have to try my natural tunic set but with my grey inner tunic sometime, thanks for the inspiration :P I'm also then thinking my black robe, boots, and belt would go perfect with that set with the grey inner tunic. I tried one of their inner tunics before though and I totally didn't like how it felt so I got one from Jedi Closet I think is what they're called also on Etsy. Will be cool to see your new robe set though for sure =]

My wife looked at FFAO and Jedi Closet (thanks to Revan and Jillian for mentioning those Etsy stores).

FFAO only had the colors she wanted in micro-fiber (+texas=too hot).  But they took measurements and sounds like they make to order.

She liked the designs at JC, but they tend to be monochromatic outfits (4 pieces, all same color) and based on a 6' male model.  We're not sure if JC will do custom sizes or colors or not.

We're curious what your experience is/will be, so keep us posted.

Eileen at Jedi Closet does custom color orders, so if you communicate with her what you're looking for, I'm sure she can help :) I have a friend currently getting some tabards and an undertunic in a shade of Olive Drab from JC for her Saber Guild Jedi. Eileen's custom pieces (Jedi closet) also tend to fit your measurements more closely than FFAO

My pleasure! She uses great fabrics too, and machine washable! She's also worked with the 501st, Rebel Legion, and Saber Guild, so she's used to making costumes that fit their quality standards as well.

I had zero experience with sewing and I’ve made the following 4 costumes (robes, tunics, belts, capes) all in the last two weeks. Be patient, watch YouTube videos, and start with cheap “throw away” material to build confidence. After two attempts I was able to make the Jedi Knight costume pictured. Then I moved on to the grey Jedi, Dooku, and Palpatine inspired costumes. It’s amazing what you can do with some motivation and imagination!!

Outstanding work DJ!  Even more impressive given that you did it yourself (there's no way that I could've made my robe&tunics  ;)).

Which do you prefer: Light or Dark points?

Dutch, I have no idea how the point system works so dealers choice. You’d be surprised how easy it is. The robes especially.  If you cut the fabric properly you only need the sew 3 seams, then add a hood and hem. The whole process takes an hour or two. The tunics take longer because they require more detail and more specific measurements. For $30 in materials you can make 2 high quality robes in a day rather than buying a cheap one on amazon for the same price. My whole reason for making my own was the lack of quality from everything I saw in store or online. I deal with Canadian Halloween and conventions. So a warm customs was essential for me. I have been choosing materials that will look good and keep me warm. I also have thinner materials for summer outfits. It’s becoming a really fun hobby just making the stuff. Going to move on to customizing the hilts I have too before diving in to new custom outfits.

I still have 3 half finished projects to complete then it’s leather wrapping and weathering (using the great threads on this forum)
