Title: Just started Kotor
Post by: jillian on May 20, 2019, 03:58:09 PM
Hi. I just started playing Kotor for the first time. It was on sale at Steam and with the new Proton/Steam Play Linux compatibility feature I figured why not. So far, it's a pretty fun game. So far, I made it to the ruins on Dantooine, completing most of the side quests along the way. I like the game, but combat mode is super frustrating.

I really like the story line, it brings together a whole bunch of missing elements that I was previously missing.

Any tips or tricks for playing?

there's a few mods you might like.  My wife hated the turret gun stuff so she got a mod to make that easier.

So it deleted my reply because public wifi is stupid :( I shall attempt to recreate. A-hem *clears throat*

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! *hyperventilates, passes out, then gets back up*

OKAY! Now that I've gotten that out of my system, let me start by saying you've made an excellent choice.

The combat system is very different from most games, but honestly, I prefer it. It's turn based, so you can set up your moves for your player character and all companion characters for literally every move, allowing for more strategic and intellectual as opposed to reflex and adrenaline based game play (that's what the turret part is for ;) ). Honestly, I think it fits the character a little better, but that could just be me. Since you've finished Taris already though, you've gotten passed the most frustrating portion.

Personally, I recommend, for planet order after Dantooine, Tattoine, Kashyyyk, Manaan, Korriban (Korriban is most fun last). This being said, if you are playing female and are romancing Carth, try to avoid having him in your party in any spaceports, so you don't accidentally trigger his side quest. Once it's triggered, you will need to complete it (without killing the main subject [wording to avoid spoilers]) before you are able to continue the romance progression... and his side quest in on Korriban. Hence the issue.

As for mods, I recommend playing through the first time without any, but after that, I can link you the restored content mod for the first game (restored content mod on steam is for the second game because it's pretty broken without). Among other things, the restored content mod for the first KOTOR has a cut ending for if you play Darkside female and chose the romance plotline. Arguably, this cut ending is stronger than any of the rqegular ones, and the darkside female romance ending without the mod is completely awful >.< My current playthrough is for this ending.

Let me know if you get stuck at any point and need help :D there are a few super KOTOR nerds here.

Thanks for all the tips! Just made it to Tatooine for the second time after that whole stowaway thing.

I'm playing female and yeah Carth is brooding pretty hard. Leaning light side and I kept Juhani.

He'll come around. The guy's been through a lot. What has he told you so far?

From what it sounds like, it sure seems like he has been through a lot! So far he's told me about his trust issues that seem to stem from his previous commander during the Mandalorian Wars turning to the Sith and now fighting for them under Malak.

Did he tell you about his family yet with Saul?

I don't think he told me about his family yet. On your advice, I've left him behind and have the two Jedi tagging along with me. I saved the guy from his wife and got all the sand people outfits and now I'm looking for the Droid.

Making much slower progress b/c it's the week and I do have to (or really should be) focus(ed) on work. lol.

He’s safe to bring out as long as you’re not by the ship. And if he’s not told you about his family yet, you can’t accidentally trigger his quest, so you’re safe for now :) go to the map and then party selection to change your party members while in “safe” zones. Sad to say, you missed one of my favorite dialogue options which only happens if you talk to Tanis (the guy you saved) in the hunting lodge for the first time if you’re playing female and have Carth in your party.

There are so many options to this game! It feel like you could play an infinite amount of ways. How many times have you played it??

I’ve lost track XD I’ve played through all of the main ending differences though, with the exception of the cut one I’m playing now

Good news is swoop races are optional. I save before I start and reload if I lose XD same goes for pazaak. Tatooine swoop race does let you be able to complete the quest line with the kid the Hutt is trying to get to sign though....

OH! Heads up, when you do get as far as Korriban, accept the smuggling deal, accept the “special delivery” and then ALWAYS OPEN THE BOX! I mean.... save first just in case, but DEFINITELY OPEN THE BOX! Especially if you like Tolkien.

My wife got a mod to skip the swoop racing.  She didn't like it.

She's very much here for the story kind of gamer.

Right now, she's cursing KotOR2 because she found out she did some quests on a planet in the wrong order so the guy(s) leave before you can finish other quests.  She had to restart from a save.

I figure one more grumpy reload and she'll convert to the dark side...

Steam actually has achievements for KOTOR II. I need to attempt the droid planet in my next play through. I always miss triggering it. KotOR II is much longer.

Finally made it past the swoop race. The trick for me was using the space bar to shift gears rather than the mouse.  :D :D

Just landed on Kaskyyk after finishing up some side projects on Tatooine.

Believe it or not, full keyboard (for steering and gears) is easier to control than mouse  for swoop racing. Mouse (or even moreso joystick) is better for the incoming fighters in space batttles. They follow a specific flight pattern though so if you want to really need it out you can do the simulation with HK-47 (not sure if you’ve picked him up yet) and memorize their flight patterns
