Title: Next Years Costume
Post by: Darth Tepes on November 07, 2019, 03:50:31 AM
So for a while leading up to Halloween I was working on a Thor Costume.... it failed.  To be blunt it wasn't just my mediocre skills but my weight.. nothing worked.  So I went to plan B and went as depressed Thor from Endgame.  I already had a wig, grew my beard out, had Stormbreaker and Mjolnir.  Fate worked and I found a pair of PJ bottoms and Hoodie that were damn close to what he wore in Endgame.  This was the result......

(https://scontent-mia3-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/76783698_10162417729045006_8479737130027843584_n.jpg?_nc_cat=107&_nc_oc=AQkO8YQPnUsSNoxrtsDy2WLKenH_ObndmyN8yO2JILFBs3_XB_hHjNT8L2UB1A7P0kdIJZ2ce-X02GS--vVvKD1K&_nc_ht=scontent-mia3-2.xx&oh=f6e57dc600b839362929febd6df2ecd1&oe=5E4E8374)

Now it was a hit with everyone.  While I appreciated the praise it was not what I wanted.  This wasn't the Thor I wanted to represent.  So I made a promise to myself that next year my weight would not hinder me...because I will do my best to get rid of it.  To that end I also decided to maybe branch out to something else.  So I narrowed it down to 4 ideas and thought it would be cool to see what you guys think.  I will let the poll run until after the New Year (as I am about to take a hiatus from the forum because of work and holiday things).  Once a winner is chosen I will document not only my weight loss but the costume making process.  So here are the choices.

Thor.   Would draw mostly from the Current Comic Costume with tweaks.

He-Man.  He-Man has been a favorite character of mine for a long time..even longer than Star Wars.  I would redesign the costume to be more barbaric.  Not quite this but some elements,,,,

Armored Sith Lord.  Self explanatory.  I've done Sith many times before but never went all out with armor.  Something like Malgus would be my direction

Zorro.  The easiest of the choices and really wouldn't require any real work.  More or less this might be a back up if something goes wrong.

I look forward to hearing what you guys think.

I have to admit: I'd love to see you go as Malgus; that character/costume is under-appreciated IMO  :)

I see too many armored Sith Lords at cons but Zorro with a lightsaber? Now, that would be cool

And put Zorro in a light Sith armor?

Why are there lots of comments in the thread, but only three votes in the actual poll?

No such thing as "too many Sith".

I'm open to suggestions
Well, the first three are all of substantial body mass (beed caaaaaaaaaakkkkkkkkeeee), so start there. I'm seeing something akin to Thor in gladiator armor and mashing elements of He-man and the Sith into it. The saber will be the real trick. I know Ripper Blades makes a Power Sword blade, but I was also seeing a hammer head with an opening for a standard blade to "emit" through. Possibly an acrylic hammer head, so that it could illuminate, but that might be a stretch. And then mashing elements to bring out He-man's shield. Maybe Thor's gladiator shield, with the round section replaced with He-man's shield, done in Sith colors.

Interesting..... You may have given me a very challenging project...point.

He-Man/Thor shouldn't be hard...adding the Sith into it is where it gets interesting.  Hmm....  Perhaps a Power Sword with Sith Runes up the blade (Like the Dark Side Blades of Old) and a barbarian looking Lightsaber.  Of course it might evolve into a Barbarian Sith :P

I had a rather interesting argument with a vendor at Grand Rapids. She argued that her barbarian rage was more than a match for my dark side powers. It was adorable. ;D

What she failed to realize is that Dark Side adepts are not unfamiliar to rage. So her rage grants her increased strength, where as my rage grants me increased power.

But back to the barbarian.....you think you can rock the furry loin cloth? ::)

That's how you define the Eternian standard issue nethers covering?

Yes.... fun fact: The only reason they aren't loin cloths is that it would have been expensive to sculpt them or have cloth on the figures.

So it boiled down to furry diapers were cheaper to manufacture. Lame

and later to animate.  The cartoon was ridiculously underfunded...which is why Adam and He-Man were the same character model.  Of course the Original story from the mini comics there was no Adam.

You're not kidding there, Tepes.  Recycled character models, animation cells, long scenes where characters do nothing but talk, and I mean that NOTHING moved but their lips...yeah, even as a kid I knew that at least certain things for the cartoon were done on the cheap.

Ah, memories...

So it boiled down to furry diapers were cheaper to manufacture. Lame
...And yet almost every figure had 'roided out musculature that Arnold would be envious about.  Go figure  ;)

I had a pretty good collection of those comics, but I remember Adam being in them. Not a lot, but he was there.

The Clark/Superman dynamic of Adam/He-Man was introduced in the DC comics run in late 82- early 83.  Which of course was carried over to the Show.  In the comics Adam appeared to be a lazy party guy to hide is heroics and transformed by going into the Cave of Power.  He himself did not wield the Power Sword but was the protector of it.  In the first mini Comics that came with the figures in 82 He-Man was a Barbarian chieftain who left to adventure and was tasked by the Goddess (who would eventually be split into the Sorceress and Teela in later comics) to protect the two halves of the Power Sword.

I am...but this is more being a He-Man nerd. By far its my largest collection.  If you get a chance watch The Toys that Made Us on Netflix.  Its a muti-part documentary about the toys that changed the industry.  The first Season is He-Man, Barbie, G.I. Joe and Transformers.  Its really interesting..at least to me.

Exactly. Everyone has gaps in their nerdist knowledge. It's why forums like this are so great. You get to share the geekery while learning something new.

Funny thing is, MotU was my first collection. But that was better than 30 years ago. (God, I feel old just thinking that)

There is a documentary on Netflix I've been meaning to watch called The Toys that Made Us or something along those lines. I for one loathe how Hasbro keeps pushing to make Transformers simpler and simpler to transform. I loved what they did with the toys from the first movie. They were so delightfully complex that you almost needed an engineering degree to figure them out.

Same... I knew a lot about He-Man already from being a fan as a kid, but when they launched the Figures in 2008 (still going to...the Snake Mountain set comes out soon)  I became hooked again and this time had the internet to absorb all the knowledge I could...both real world about its production and its in story Lore (Such as in current canon Skeletor is He-Man's half-Uncle).   The Toys that Made is is what I was talking about, its real interesting.  Also in terms of He-Man there is a documentary solely about MOTU called The Power of Greyskull.  A toy line that was made because they needed a competition for Star Wars toys...and they won.  For a while.  It wasn't even loss of Interest that killed it...its was poor handling of the line.
