Title: Mandalorian-Style Blasters
Post by: Therion Jinn on March 21, 2020, 11:47:27 PM
Had an idea for a new cosplay. This time, a Mandalorian-style bounty hunter.
The pistols I plan on making are based on the "Interstellar Regulator Besh" pistol from Star Wars: The Old Republic

Using the screenshots as a guide, I made a template in Paint Shop Pro, and then printed out two copies

For the bodies of the guns, I'll be using cores of 1/2" EVA floor mat foam, and the outer sides will be from 10mm HD EVA foam.

PVS barrels cut to length amd the channels for them laid out on the foam pieces

Midified the pieces to accept the PVC barrels by cutting the inserts out of the cores, and then using my Dremmel to carve the channels in the outer pieces

Guns assembled.
Pieces were glued together using Gorilla construction adhesive

With the barrels in place, I turned my attention to detailing the guns.
Further shaping was done with a sanding drum in my Dremel
The lines were burned in using the tip of my soldering iron

With construction basically finished, I gave both pistols a coat of black Plasti-Dip to seal the foam
(http://i.imgur.com/SFXEze7.jpg)

Gave both guns a base coat of Krylon Charcoal Metallic

Went in after the metallic was dry and painted in the white with acrylic craft paint
The red details were painted in with Citadel Mephiston Red
Thw whole thing was given a black wash, followed by a drybrush with silver to add to the weathered look
Finished build pics:

Are they perfect? No
Am I happy with them? Yes
Why? Because, while I could have modded a couple of Nerf-style guns for these, I didn't. These guns are entirely my own work.

Thanks! I think I just found my next 'social distancing'-project to keep the kids busy!
Probably won't end up this good, but they need to learn (and their dad ;) )

"Perfect?"  Who cares...these are AWESOME TJ!!!  Wow, what a fantastic project with wonderful results!  I am REALLY liking those guns!  But the best is seeing the progression of your work; it's truly amazing to see the project from idea to completion like what you did  :)

Oh, and for the record, I think those ARE "perfect"  :D

Point!

Thank you very much, guys.
I've always liked working with my hands, and these were a very fun project.

Fun part will be starting the rest of the armor kit

Thank you for the incredible write up and review, Therion. I like the way you think and how you plan to build something and make it into reality. Good work on these pistols, the detailing is what makes these pistols life like. Points incoming

You are too kind, sir
But, yes, the main key is making a plan that can work

You're welcome, Therion. Just stating what I see ;)

I may borrow this and design my own gun if you don't mind

Very welcome, Infinit

Just a reminder, though, that the trigger guard is likely too small and may need to be resized.
The one in game actually clips through the character's finger

Ah, good to know, I will make sure to resize it since I have large fingers

I mentioned it in the build video, but apparently forgot to do that in my write up

And I also have some pretty good sized fingers

No worries, I apparently missed that in your video as well since I was really excited about the how to.

Great job! Anytime you can make it yourself or is special. I couldn't do anything like that.
