Title: A pair of Mandalorian Helmets
Post by: Therion Jinn on April 27, 2020, 12:01:20 AM
For a cosplay my son and I are still hoping to use at Celebration, or possibly FanX this year, I started work on what is arguably the most difficult part of an Mandalorian-style bounty hunter: the helmets.

I apologize for not posing the pics, but the video really tells the story

Nice video, Therion. I always enjoy your customizing videos and this one's no exception. The attention to detail is always enjoyable

Thank you, Infinit01
They're still very much a WIP, but they're coming along very nicely

This is just incredible, TJ!  Laboriously constructed yet easy to follow...Infinit01 is right: your attention to detail is remarkable  :)

Oh, and I love spying all of the goodies in the background that you have in your shop  :D

Great job!  Point!

I love the vents on the back of the helmet, makes it like the real deal. From someone who's worn a lot of helmets for different things, I always make sure I get ones with vents

Title: Re: A pair of Mandalorian Helmets
Post by: Therion Jinn on May 05, 2020, 02:54:42 AM
Thanks, guys.
Now, admittedly, the vents on the backs of the two helmets are purely for show, and non-functional.

I'll have an update later on

Of course, I wouldn't thought it was real even though that would of been cool.

incredible work as always!

Questions from a novice:

What kind of heat gun do you recommend for shaping EVA? I'm looking for something as cheap but effective as possible.

What foam do you like using?

I'm looking at creating a pair of vembraces starting from this pattern and minus the fins (https://www.thefoamcave.com/product/template-for-batman-gauntlets/ (https://www.thefoamcave.com/product/template-for-batman-gauntlets/)) and some shoulder armor from this picture (there's no way I'm pulling off the rest of the outfit :-D ). I'm struggling with figuring out how to make a pattern for the armor for that but I think it would start out as a circle that is flattened like a taco shell? (mmm tacos)

Anyhoo...good work...and your son is super lucky...

All right

The heat gun I use is one I picked up off of Amazon: It's a Wen 2000. And has two heat settings

Recently, I've been using HD EVA foam from Blik. It was recommended by Odin Abbott of the OdinMakes channel
The two thicknesses I mainly use are 10mm and 6mm
I've also used 1/2" floor mats from Home Depot

You may be able to find some templates via YouTube or other places.
Those Batman Gauntlets look pretty good, based on the pics

Yeah, he's lucked out.
He's also the one who suggested the Mando kits in the first place

And thanks for that link.
I found a couple of useful things there for my own use

Thanks again for the suggestions.

The foam cage stuff is nice and I'm thinking of re-doing my jedi belt pouches by modding the free batman belt pouches to suit.

Thanks, Dutchman.
May still add some detailing to them.

Then comes the really scary part: Installing the visors

With the builds complete, I am now posting the FULL build gallery

Building a couple of Mandalorian helmets for cosplays my son and I will be doing later this year
(http://i.imgur.com/3XcAP60.jpg)

My son's helmet will be based on the "Heavy Infantry Helmet" templates by Odin Abbott
(http://i.imgur.com/zThy62W.jpg)

For my helmet, I'll be using the "Mandalorian" templates from DIY Props and Punished Props
(http://i.imgur.com/adw4LWK.jpg)

Laying out the parts for my son's helmet on some 10mm HD EVA foam
(http://i.imgur.com/MMb8dWr.jpg)

Then laid out mine on the same
(http://i.imgur.com/hJVDo64.jpg)

Then we have the parts to be made from 6mm HD EVA foam
There will also be some parts cut from 2mm foam

Beginning sanding work with a detail sander.
The foam is getting a little chewed up at this stage.
I also had to thin down the interior of the cheeks as they were rubbing on my son's cheeks

Sanding on my helmet. I've also opened the visor

Filling seams on my son's helmet using Kwik Seal.
I also used it on the rough areas of the surface
(http://i.imgur.com/GbbJgu3.jpg)

For my helmet, I did the seam filling with a spackle compound

Masked off and sprayed the red sections on the front of my helmet
(http://i.imgur.com/6YLbXzu.jpg)

Painted in the cheek insets and ear pieces in Vallejo Dark Grey primer
(http://i.imgur.com/cuxZek0.jpg)

For my son's helmet, we went with Krylon "Global Blue" and the same red I'd used on mine
(http://i.imgur.com/dLD1CSB.jpg)

While Odin included a template for the visor on his, I needed to make one for mine.
This was done by placing printer paper behind the opening and tracing it in Sharpie
(http://i.imgur.com/r3q9rNY.jpg)

Took three tries, but I got a template that would fit
(http://i.imgur.com/UteF8tS.jpg)

Masked off some detail areas, as well as free-handing some markings
(http://i.imgur.com/2yYqpWU.jpg)

Removing the masking did some damage to the metallic color.
Luckily, the sealer coat did bring it back into normalcy

Laid painter's tape on both sides of the visors I'd be cutting, and then taped the templates into place
(http://i.imgur.com/WicLCxs.jpg)

Cut the visors out using my Dremel
(http://i.imgur.com/bi1Ss16.jpg)

Used a heat gun  to make the visors better fit the shape of the helmets.
(In retrospect, I'd have had an easier time if I'd done the heat forming BEFORE cutting the visors)

With the visors in place, here are the finished pics:

That is coming along quite well, Therion.  I like how rugged they both look and the color combos are a nice touch

I was gonna ask why cut the face shield at all, then I scrolled farther up and saw the interior cheekbone shape.

So I'll suggest something different for next time. Consider not cutting the severe T shape, but one that accommodates as much of the surface of the mask as possible for increased gluing surface.  The mask itself takes care of the T shape the audience sees.

Very true as to the overall look.
In fact, I did something similar WAYYYYYYYYY back in my junior high days

Decided to go in and fix a couple of flaws in my Mandalorian helmet.

My mandalorian cosplay helmet as originally finished.
Visible here are some areas where the paint had bled under the tape I'd used for masking
(http://i.imgur.com/j0b9nVw.jpg)

And here is the main reason for this update.
I don't really like how this emblem turned out
(http://i.imgur.com/mbEjf3a.jpg)

Used my printer-which opted to be VERY uncooperative-to print up some emblems more along the lines of what I was looking for.
These were painted over with Tamiya clear red to fix some of the printing issues, and are HEAVILY based on the emblem for Games Workshop's "Luna Wolves" Space Marine Legion
(http://i.imgur.com/wcymLh8.jpg)

Striping cleaned up after decanting some of the spray paint used for the base color.
I also completely painted over the old emblem attempt that had disappointed me
(http://i.imgur.com/yuDG1ku.jpg)

End results:
Clean striping
(http://i.imgur.com/OYhS3nh.jpg)

MUCH better emblem.

This is incredibly inspiring. I've got a Boba helmet on the way to customize and I also play Warhammer 40k, so I'm going to go through my decals to see what speaks to me.

Markings can be found in many places.
I'd originally tried to mask off and paint, but it looked too clunky for my tastes.

The other badges will find homes elsewhere on my armor

Title: Re: A pair of Mandalorian Helmets
Post by: mrg149 on May 27, 2020, 02:12:31 PM
These are incredibly done, sir!

What adhesive do you use? Barge?

I'm circling the drain on trying out creating some foam bracers as it seems a great place to start...so...tempting...

The pattern I have will be a modded Batman 52 gauntlet (minus fins) and uses the thin craft foam sheet, but I was considering the 6mm for a base and layering in details in the thin (2mm?) sheet.

I saw a nice technique where you cut a very narrow slit in the foam and then when you go to heat it up, the slit expands. Thought that would make a nice little detail in the underneath part of the design with an overlay.

Title: Re: A pair of Mandalorian Helmets
Post by: Therion Jinn on May 28, 2020, 02:26:47 AM
Thanks, MRG

I used Weldwood contact cement, which is similar to Barge

The foam bracer idea is an excellent place to start, and the 6mm thickness as a base is an excellent idea. My Therion bracers are 6mm plus Sintra

Using heat to bring out details like that is a very good method. Just be careful with your cuts

Title: Re: A pair of Mandalorian Helmets
Post by: mrg149 on May 28, 2020, 11:33:03 PM
Thanks for the feedback Therion! I think the thicker "base" foam will have a better look than what was recommended.

Do you know if any of the Gorilla Glue products would work as well as Barge or Weldwood?

Title: Re: A pair of Mandalorian Helmets
Post by: Therion Jinn on May 29, 2020, 02:43:02 AM
The Gorilla 'super glue' might.
Problem is a tendency for the foam to absorb the liquid glues
You can also use hot glue as an alternative, though
