Title: Saber concept art
Post by: HesaHeart on May 22, 2020, 06:24:46 PM
As i wait for my first saber i thought i would play around in my 3d program and maybe attract other such artists, I present the "Lux"  a simple but elegant saber

And immediate point! Simple yet attractive. Looks like a comfortable wield too. Im happy to see another one of these threads pop up! Keep the designs coming and for similar stuff check out these

For Tyeth's thread http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=40017.0, (http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=40017.0,) FT is a Blender wizard and the king saber smith in the fanart section

And my own thread http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=41788.0, (http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=41788.0,) I do more pen/pencil and paper stuf, so its not as detailed but im usually pretty quick on the "draw"  if you'll excuse the pun

Greetings HesaHeart,

Great to see another digital artist posting! The Lux definitely fits the bill as "elegant" - I like the slanted windows (especially difficult to model on a curved object).

I was just trying to work out which software you use  ;)

Thanks for sharing and I look forward to seeing more designs in future.

Hello again,

I haven't seen Rhino 3D before, I thought maybe you were using Fusion 360 or Autodesk's software.
I'll have to look Rhino up.

I just had a quick search online. Yes it was originally created to do design modelling in the marine/ship building area. It seems to have all the features, texture mapping and bump mapping. Definitely looks cool what you have posted so far.

Thank you it has come along way, I plan to upgrade to v6 when works starts back up as all i can do is work out alone ( i can deal with out working but no classes hurts , Im afraid i will have to spend a few weeks reteaching my students ) and sit here i may as well be some kind of productive ( oh and your no slouch in blender )

Title: Re: Saber concept art
Post by: For Tyeth on May 23, 2020, 12:54:11 AM
That's very kind of you to say, thanks. But believe it or not I only picked Blender up in June 2018, I tried SketchUp but that didn't work for me as it sucked not being able to work with complex curved geometry (you had to pay for a license to get all the modelling tools).

Rhino is great for drawing but its rendering is weak ( i have tried blender, sketch, max, etc and this is just my opinion i like rhino's ui )

Each to their own preferences, Rhino certainly works for you. And I love the wrapping on "The Heart, I want to do a Tsuka Ito wrap on a few of my Katana builds. But I did model Mulan's hilt recently.

Thank you. I posted this to give you an idea of how Blender can render stuff. All the etchings (apart from the central phoenix logo on the tsuba) are actually bump mapped using a UV Map layout. The phoenix is a 2D logo I extruded into 3D.

First of all: welcome to the Fan Fiction Forums, HesaHeart!  Always a pleasure to meet a fellow creator, ESPECIALLY one that is proficient in the visual arts!  You are in GOOD company with For Tyeth and PsychoSith  :)

One and all, your sabers are incredible creations!  The texturing is nothing short of amazing!  If I had to choose, I think I'd pick...

could not come up with a name
(http://i.imgur.com/21i7Drg.jpg) (http://imgur.com/21i7Drg)

...This one as my favorite!  It DEFINITELY deserves a name IMO  ;)

Since you're new here in the forums, I would HIGHLY recommend that you check out For Tyeth's thread (found here: http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=40017.msg670197#msg670197 (http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=40017.msg670197#msg670197)) and PsychoSith's (found here:http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=41788.msg717613#msg717613)

And for the more literary side of SW, I suggest that you read any and everything from Karmack, Lord_S_Gray, Taegin Roan, Lady Revan, and TheDrunkenConsular.  They all have phenomenal stories (better than most of the EU books IMO!) which I canNOT stress enough!  And--if I might be so bold--I've a few submissions myself if you are so inclined to read  ;)

Again: welcome and great job!

Point!

Hi HesaHeart,

Great pair of droids! The C-3PO definitely hits the mark, I recognise the eye lense details and the exposed wiring midrfiff looks cool.

And yes, saber designing can get a bit addictive...I'm at around the 500 designs mark now...and counting!

scary part is im thinking of setting up a machine shop now, only need a lathe and a milling machine oh well drawing them is alot cheaper. I qonder if US would part with full set of spec's for the dimension both inner and outter, thread size etc

You're going fast on the drawings, or I'm just a slow reader.
Love your latest staff, like the C3PO one, for the references For Tyeth allready mentioned.

The R2D2 feels a bit simple, not to be rude or anything, but after your other detailed drawings....

Second Crouching Tiger-version is definately my favorite!
Like the black hilt, has a nice medieval feel to it. Not sure about that emitter, may be shorter, or thicker walls, don't know. But love the bottom part of that hilt.
And those sai's, nice idea. I'm not proficient with them so I'm not sure, but wouldn't you constantly burn your forearms?

In short love your designs, keep up the good work and have a point.

I really like this one too...that combination of mesh and colour scheme looks great (not grate  ;) ) I know how difficult mesh and grilles are to produce in 3D software. I built a Spiderman themed hilt with an emitter made from webbing - it was a nightmare to get right.

point for the share.

All the stuff here looks incredible, but I have very little to say other than “wow” when I see this stuff, so I generally don’t post anything.  Know, however, that your work is being appreciated, even if I can’t find decent words.

I appreciate it, i have wanted a saber for a long while now. I have orderd my first ( not here yet ) now they have occupy my creative mindset. I dont want to simply copy what US has already created and maybe if i i come up with a part be it  pommel, hilt or emitter that the other users like enough that US will reproduce for us but im sure there own in house design team have a ton of ideas on their own.

I like the look you have on this one
And to bo honest, you've got me thinking on doing a nice traditional wrap on one of my sabers.

The effect itself looks good, but be sure to keep in mind how materials react to stresses. For instance the fabric here might burn instead of scorch. The scorch looks like it would go GREAT on metal though. Overall well done!

I do like the look of this (while completely agreeing with PS's observations).  The weathering on the pommel looks especially detailed  :)

One suggestion: use a lighter background for contrast & clarity; that will really make your work pop!

Hi HesaHeart, nice collection of parts, funnily enough the last one on the bottom row reminds me of another Dr Who adversary - the Cybermen with those pipes on either side!

I tend to concentrate on building full sabers too. I start making a component part, say a pommel but then get carried away and build the whole thing! However one of the single parts I did manage to build was my "Temple Emitter" which I liked quite a bit. Here's a quick picture of it:

Anyway back to your work, congrats on your progress and I definitely like the new render engine images (some form of Ray Tracing or Light Cycles engine?) Point awarded when 24hrs has passed (We can only award 1 point per member per 24hr period ok!)

Hi HesaHeart and Logos, I'd say the metal looks like a "Lightly Smoked Chrome" material which looks really nice.
And to HesaHeart, I checked out Adobe Dimension but I wouldn't be able to utilise it...I couldn't afford to subscribe to use it. This is one big advantage that Blender has for me....it's free (so far).

Don't know what you did in your rendering options, but the lighting in your pictures is beautiful.
And several (if not all) of thos hilts should be made in real life.
Just out of curiosity. Can those designs be used and put in a CNC or something?

I was sitting here and after my 2 nd time checking order status today i was window shopping sabers and parts ( wipes drool of chin ) and the thought came to my head that inspired this design. A light saber is a highly technical weapon with alot of parts that can break down or get damaged so i went a more technical design allowing access to the inner parts as well as outer parts change outs

Hi HesaHeart,

If Rhino3d allows layered textures then you could apply a base texture (in this case red metallic) then apply a second layer consisting of a "noise pattern" that can be used to simulate dirt, grime and scratches. You should also have access to "Bump Map" layers and you can use these to recreate bumps, ridges and nicks and cuts. Bump mapping might require using UV Unwrapping to create a mapping layer to position the textures and bump effects.

And the double Malgus bladed staff you built reminds me of my friend, Eddlyss' Lego Bionicle inspired staff (Turahks's Staff of Fear) I have displayed on my site.

Works well, only suggestion I would make is some 'chips' in the paint that show the through to the metal underneath, especally on sharp edges where it would take knocks and such in battle.

Cool background too very Scarif like.

So... is the ax blade sharp enough to be useful for chopping limbs (either arboreal or animal) when the saber is de-activated?  Is it made of Cortosis or Mandalorian Iron?

Details, man, details!  Some of us have limited skills when it comes to translating images into possibilities, and we need some extra help.  LOL

I admit im not very versed in SW universe so i will do my best to fill in some details , the axe and spike can penetrate most armor and is composed of a material that can with stand a light saber strike ( i read some where that this kind of material exists ), its length when not activated is 30"  in length.

To be honest, I had to search “material that can withstand lightsaber” to find those terms, because, like you, their names had escaped my brain for the nonce.   ;)

At 30” (approximately 75cm) when powered down, that seems like a pretty decent force-multiplier (physical force, not The Force in this case) for a melee weapon.

By the way, did I mention that it looks really nice, too?  And right now, it looks brand new and parade-ground ready, but a few skirmishes will change that, I’m sure.  VERY WELL DONE, sir!

Two facts: 1) FT IS an AMAZING artist!!!
                    2) You are doing incredible work!!

Seriously HH, that's what makes these forums so wonderful is the support, sharing, and constructive criticism of our fellow artists.  For instance: I feel that Karmack's writing has better emotional dialogue than my own, that LSG's encyclopaedic knowledge of SW (ESPECIALLY Legends EU) lends itself to much better plotting than (again) my own stories, and with TR's "Shadow of the Outcast" (especially when he finishes  ;)) has presented a truly remarkable character study that I hope to emulate in the emotional scope of his individual protagonist/anti-villain.  I cannot recommend enough that you read their stories!

Sorry, not to digress, but I can empathize with you, and here's what I've learned: the feedback I receive--especially from my fellow artists but welcome from everyone  :)--makes me a better author.  But more so, the works of our fellow visual artists, FT and PsychoSith, have inspired me on numerous occasions, giving me inspiration for a scene, a character, or even an entire plot arc.

Long story short (too late, I know   ;)): we love seeing your work and you will continue to improve  ;D

During my emails with US rep i gave them links to  both FT's and  my own design links of course some designs are just not viable to reproduce but a lot are , While reproducing saber cannon designs is great the saber manufacturing field is getting crowded fast, some make less quality units but offer better electronics at a lower price point, others produce amazing high quality and have a price tag to match . so where does a business go in my opinion to us the consumer why not assemble a group of folks from outside the company to come up with new designs  and not just people with graphic skills but also writer types and just people who can express ideas. the first company to seriously do this will dominate the market.

Exactly. Something I've been screaming for for a long time is a SaberBuilder function that would allow those that know what they want, to piece together a saber from available MHS parts and then have US stuff it with the desired electronics. I eventually pieced together a custom saber for my girl, but it would have been nice to not have get parts that I didn't want.

And then there's you and For. This was based on one of his and Psycho's collaborations. I had him shorten it and trim the frills and dressings so something I thought US could manage to produce.

The beskar would be an easy one to produce. As for a saber builder with all of the members here some one should be a code wiz and FT and i could do the models for it

It's not just the coding, I want it to be a purchase option. I've even suggested marking up the parts a little for the inconvenience of stocking certain parts more than others. Something I have seen for years of dealing with US is them keeping Catalyst pommels stocked. The are like the single most popular pommels US sells.
