Title: Anyone used steering wheel covers? Other materials?
Post by: JdiKnhtJMH on January 31, 2011, 02:33:13 AM
I saw some steering wheel covers in the store today and thought about using the leather ones as hand grips for some of my sabers. Has anyone else tried this? What other materials do you find useful when customizing, share your secrets. I've found that zip ties are super cool for lots of things, and that my wal mart's little button rack can yield lots of things that look like they really are buttons,.

I like leather cord for wrapping my hilts.  I've found it both online at at the local Michaels craft store.  It's usually in the scrapbooking section.  I used a 2mm black leather cord on a base of 2-sided scotch tape.  I've found that a basic knotted wrap style works best, as it doesn't unravel with use and stays tight as you work on it.

You'd be surprised what some electrical tape can do. I put some on my Aeon, between the switch housing and blade holder, can't even tell it's tape unless you look REAL close and see the tape lines. I also like the grips from aluminum baseball bats or tennis rackets for grips.

Suede laces and leather from craft stores work pretty well. I did a solid leather piece on an old arbiter that I modified that I need to find a way to get a pic of on the forum. I'm playing with wire wrapping, but I don't have any prototypes just yet.

I have used the leather lace, tennis/base ball grips and O-rings.  It doesn't really matter what you use as long as it is comfortable for you and it is the look you are going for.  I say try the wheel cover, it is always good to experiment with different things.

As a good patriotic Canucklehead I am required to say that Hockey stick tape is cheap and easily replaceable...not pretty enough for display-worthy sabers but gets the job done for adding traction to 'working' sabers.

I just bought one from walmart for 10 bucks. The curve of it means I think it'll only work on my Dark Apprentices, and it's a bit of a tight fit, but it looks AWESOME, and theres a lot of styles to pick from.

PS: The little ball on the end of Ahsoka and Obi Wan's TPM sabers? Use a kitchen faucet aerator available in the plumbing aisle. They come in either silver or black, they're cheap, and they're PERFECT.
