Title: The Bellicose (Images and words heavy)
Post by: qroon on March 04, 2012, 04:46:56 AM
This is not just my first Ultra Saber but my first saber. I posted the unboxing here:

http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=5466.0 (http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=5466.0)

And below is my mini-review:

The hilt.

As described on the product page, it's 13.5 inches. The width is 1.45 inches. The pommel's width is around 1.65 inches. While the emitter is around 1.6 inches wide. The wider emitter is not noticeable in the pictures but gives a distinct look. a very movie-like saber look. The accessory button (I have the default red) looks like the power button. And the actual power button, the A/V switch with new bezel, appears to be a monitor light.

The lower part of the hilt (the black part) is the smoothest and the most 'grippable' part (for the lack of a better term). The upper part is handy as well but the grooves (black stripes) feel a bit sharp. Not the sharp that would cut your hands but it feels sharp compared to the very smooth lower hilt.

I'm a bit ambivalent with the placement of the Covertec wheels. Here's why, I'm right handed when spinning and single hand usage. I tried to use both my hands (the right on the upper while the left on the lower) and the Covertec wheel feels weird on my left hand. I switch the hand usage then lo and behold! It feels more natural. I then remembered, I'm 'left handed' when using both hands. I use left handed golf clubs, swings in the left in base/softball. And now, in sabers.

The hilt is not heavy nor bulky. I was able to spin it nicely. I haven't weighed it, but I think that the blade is heavier than the hilt.

The blade.

I ordered an Ultra Edge Heavy Grade. It's very sturdy and heavy! And yet, very bright. Maybe I'll get a mid-grade to compare the heaviness while in use. Or get a midgrade for a grab bag, he he he. I can't compare the brightness with anything that I have (except for my daughter's cheap light baton).

As for the insides, I have not explored it. Except for changing the batteries (I ordered two extra batteries). I found it easy to access and remove the batteries. I didn't do any of the hard bumping and shaking.

If I have to rate it, I'll give it 9/10. :) And now, the pics:

Very nice pictures... The Bellicose has a very good chance on becoming my third saber.

your illuminated switch potrudes out much more than mine, hmmm strange. but my av switch is red though, that could be a difference,

US recently started putting bezels on the AV switches, if you've got an older saber with AV switch, it wouldn't have the bezel, so it'd sit closer to the hilt. That's probably where the difference you're seeing is, Gold Leader. :)

Ahh, the Bellicose. A triumph of Saber Engineering.

Apart from the price, I just love the slanted emitter. For my taste, it makes the hilt saber-like and not flash-light like (when no blades are attached).

As what Manroon stated, I got the newer A/V switch. In terms of color prominence, Blue is much brighter than Red. So if you have red A/V switch and blue blade, the red would be washed out I think.

Ahh, the Bellicose. A triumph of Saber Engineering.

Definitely!

Just to toss in another two cents on the AV issue... my own Bellicose has a CG blade with Red AV. Looks fantastic with the contrast, gives a real 'status light' effect beneath the accessory button. I love it! :)

Nice saber. Bellicose is one of my favorite sabers.

Second this.  Having just gotten a CG saber with a red AV switch, I really do like the combo.  I originally didn't like the idea of non-matching AV switches, but my Consular has definitely made me come around.

Great saber man!

@ Manroon and Nero, I will definitely try a different colored AV switch the next time. My daughter has here eye on the Initiates :)

@ Zren Tobas - Get the Bellicose!  ;D

@ CZERO and Vex, once I've cleared my sched, I'll post more items. More details and practice use.
