Thx for the tutorial Darth Rifter

No problem. I noticed how no one had made one before. So I had paint, and a blank ultrasaber, so I thought why not. Plus it looks very convincing in person.

I havent bought a US saber yet...but I was thinkin of stuff I would like to do to my first saber to make it my 1ST.....And I have been seeing sabers with antiqued type looks and your video hit a spot....

Interesting. I dry brush my warhammer figures but didn't think of doing it to my sabers. Once I get actual battle damage on there I may start this to cover up scratches.

I plan on using Testor paint to try paint some Aurebesh onto my saber. Do you think that paint would hold up in a more precise painting situation? Using a small brush would the paint go onto the aluminum properly to make something like writing letters come out properly?

Post by: Darth Rifter on August 07, 2012, 05:38:34 PM
Yes, Testors is a great paint to use for this. A small brush would be best and make sure you clear coat.

model paint, silver. Model masters or testors work well.

Is there a way to do this to the Bellicose? I might "damage" the shroud some and make the black parts look used.

Fine grit sandpaper will weather the black handle part on the Bellicose. I saw a YouTube video on that and the saber looked great and quite worn.

Is it Acrylic or oil painting?

Title: Re: Dry Brushing tutorial to add weathering to a saber

I would think it's enamel paint, the kind you use for model kits or metal parts.  You can find it at any local hobby shop (if they sell model trains, model car or airplane kits, or wargaming miniatures they almost certainly have the paints) or places like Michaels or Hobby Lobby.  As Darth Rifter said, Testors or Model Masters are two common brands.  It comes in little bottles.

Thanks Darth Rifter that's a great tutorial, think i'll dig out my brushes and enamel paints and try this tomorrow :)

One quick question, you said to clear coat it to stop it from wearing off, I was wondering if the dry brushing could be removed with enamel thinner if I mess it up or just change my mine about it being weathered/battle damaged or would that strip off or damage the black anodising too ?

Title: Re: Dry Brushing tutorial to add weathering to a saber
Post by: Azean on November 22, 2013, 05:51:11 PM
Yep enamel thinner works fine, had a go at it earlier, wasn't happy with my effort so cleaned it off, will have another stab at it later

Awesome demo with the weathering on that saber and EeRocKK for giving a cheaper way of weathering an already black saber without cashing too much into the process.

Thanks Rifter, i already tried it on my Scorpion and it looks AMAZING!!!!!  Question about the clear coat though... i know testers has the clear coat... but should i use the spray or just brush it on like i did the paint?  I'm worried about how the clear coat will look when it dries on the hilt (like shiny or different looking spots where the clear coat is).  Suggestions?  Thanks!

here are some before and after pics.  let me know what you all think..  i'm worried i went a little overboard... but at the same time, i'm going for very weathered... not kinda weathered :D  should fit better with the weathered look of the sith costume I commissioned.  The silver metallic paint seemed to work WAY better on a black anodized saber.  Didn't work so well with gun metal black on my Bellicose.   [img]https://scontent-a-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/t1.0-9/10153763_10203597016830243_8123325472261828522_n.jpg/img]  [img]https://scontent-b-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc3/t1.0-9/10007470_10203597015430208_1919469142712279797_n.jpg/img]  [img]https://scontent-a-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/t1.0-9/10001579_10203597015950221_4805822204307446958_n.jpg/img]  [img]https://scontent-a-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/t1.0-9/10154926_10203597016390232_4120203946356379150_n.jpg/img]

Point for the video! My mom used dry brush techniques in a lot of her ceramics she painted... I never thought of using it on a saber. I'm going to give it a try on my Dominix V2.

Great tutorial! I'll try this with my Dark Sentinel I bought from a friend. I was wondering, will this work with metallic black paint and a silver hilt?

It'll give the hilt a sense of being dirty, but it won't give it the same worn down look that silver on black gives.
You would need to get the black into the grooves and what have you to give it a true worn down look.

It really depends how far you want to go with it, generally when I weather a plain aluminum hilt I cover the entire thing in a very thin layer of black/bronze/whatever color and then slowly remove it with fine grit sand paper until I achieve the look I want.

Thanks everyone. I didn't even know this topic was still alive. This is a great temporary effect and easy to remove. A permanent option which gives it a much more real look is sandpaper. Happy customizations.

Your video helped me alot on my Renegade LE, eventually prob try same technique on a blaster. But I have a question, what kind of clear coat do you/or anybody else use? Like specific brand paint on or spray, noticed some of weather effect coming off so want to seal it before I rub to much off. Will the clear coat make it shiney, looking to seal the paint but trying to avoid making it shiney again.

Thank you so much for this. I really wanna do this on my saber when I order it. Do you have a recommended grit for the sandpaper method?

Title: Re: Dry Brushing tutorial to add weathering to a saber
Post by: Giglamesh on April 29, 2016, 12:25:47 AM
I used this method and id say stick with fine higher count, rougher stuff would probably scrath the piss out of it. But I first used super fine like 12k sanding squares for models..and taht almost seemed to much, as I could tell anything was even sanded.

I too like the "rattle" can. Krylon or Rustolieum both work well, the finish is up to you. Brush on is good for small areas or pieces, but if you're doing the whole hilt go spray for nice even coverage.

Okay cool, that makes sense. I'm going to try light dry brushing for some weathering on my Aeon v4's then figured I needed some kind of clearcoat to hold it all together. Now trying to figure out the best way to hold it for spraying, might craft something really quick out of some spare 2x4's and a wooden dowel held sideways that I can hang the hilt on, then I can take that anywhere and spray it

used a mix of bottle and rattle on my latest project (click below to see album)… dry brushing and washes go a long way to making great effects. The tutorials on these forums are massively helpful and I refer to them constantly…still want to watch someone do a tutorial where they do battle damage…but that's me ;-)

I have a saber that I am planning to customize and I'm planning on some weathering (who wants a shiny saber anyway?!?) & a leather wrap. I want to use some kind of a wash to give the hilt some "grime" effect. Can anyone give a tip on how to make and use a wash like this?

I would think it's enamel paint, the kind you use for model kits or metal parts.  You can find it at any local hobby shop (if they sell model trains, model car or airplane kits, or wargaming miniatures they almost certainly have the paints) or places like Michaels or Hobby Lobby.  As Darth Rifter said, Testors or Model Masters are two common brands.  It comes in little bottles.

I find at least near me, the Testors are cheaper by almost a buck per bottle for the same size, and tend to dilute better.
