It CAN be done. I've done it with a Reaper and am in the process of doing it with a Sentinel LE because I didn't like the gold on the version without windows. It's just on a slight hiatus at the moment as I'm stuck in bed with the flu. Depending on what kind of finish you're aiming for is where the tricky part may be.
As a word of warning, another member recently tried to do a similar project with their Reaper hilt... and it's not gone to plan. So how good are your sanding and painting skills? That would be the first thing to establish.
Yes I am that other member my reaper is in pieces right now as I am in the process of turning a lemon into lemon aide. Be careful with how long you leave the oven cleaner on for. I left me on for to long and it pitted the metal. So now instead of an inverted reaper I am going to put my miniature painting skills to use and make a "bone reaper" the plan is weathering the main body. then claws and the collar I am going to prime paint dark ivory or black then dry brush light ivory after that clear coat it. The pitting should give it a nice textured finish when all said and done fingers crossed
