Appreciation would be nice after some of the grief I've been getting lately. I've had two of my friends tell me that no matter how good my costumes get, I don't have a snowflake's chance in heck of winning the costume contest at the local con, because I do original characters, and the judges are biased toward what's popular. I seriously hope my friends are mistaken on this, it would really suck if the only con in town was like that. I feel that if a contest allows original characters, then there needs to be no bias against them in the judging, likewise no favoritism of what's "popular" at the time.

That would be a shame.  I know little about such judging, but to me it seems the MORE original the costume the better in that sort of contest.  I would think the idea would be to stand out.  Your ideas seem like they do just that!

So long as we could watch it and go "Ok, that could work" then yeah. I'll admit, Avataristic Buildings is pretty damned interesting. Personally speaking we may be able to pass it off as a "mech" of some kind, but then again, I would need to sit down and really have a talk with you.

The point being is that we're not arbitrarily throwing stuff in. You almost have to have a thesis defense as to why this character needs to be such and such a way (most of the examples you've seen were the first members, so they've been grandfathered in) especially if the character is non-canon. I love borrowing from other sources, but I'm of the school of we're Star Wars based it needs to uphold the spirit, if not the letter of the the universe

Yes indeed!  I was speaking on a hypothetical level...even though there are some (ok, lots lol) of the most unusual characters in NY Jedi...I can see that there is a serious effort to maintain a very high level of appearance and performance.

Most ideas can find a way into the Star Wars universe with just a nudge.

I was thinking that the NY Jedi would be a great fit or at least appreciative of the efforts, because it is an element of New York, the skyline icons  Smiley

Although you have to admit, the mental image of Chrysler Building giving some poor wannabe Sith Lord is a funny one! Or all three of the XYZ buildings trying to take on 30 Rock! (That last one would be a friendly duel, they're part of the same family after all). In all seriousness, I don't think I'd want to fight with my Chrysler Building crown, that one might get in the way. But her more flat roofed friends, such as One and Two New York Plaza and 55 Water street would be easier to duel with, and I can design some great costumes for them which will still be practical to fight in.

I was thinking perhaps stick with the animism angle, along the lines of Zenoma Sekot and other unusual sentients of the SW universe, or perhaps an extremely sophisticated AI of some sort.

Ack, no edit feature:(
I meant to say Chrysler Building giving some Sith the What-For:)
Anyone wanna take bets on which lightsaber forms these guys might prefer? 55 Water's big, stocky, and doesn't mess around. Vaapad for sure. Of the aforementioned Rockefeller buildings, I can see 30Rock with a lightstaff. Of the XYZ buildings, Exxon might prefer a long single sword and fight with a blend of form 2 and Ataru.  McGraw-Hill strikes me as a dual wielder, not sure which specific form. Celanese might use something unusual like a light yari, favoring a style like pure ataru, where agility can be used to show up taller, stronger opponents.
Hmm..If I could just find the cosplayers, this would be seriously fun to choreograph. I wonder who would win?
