A first prototype for a saber mod to enable disconnecting and reconnecting on the fly.
Works pretty well. The Phantom initiate v3 is the perfect size for this type of thing. The hilts are a great length for duel weilding and long enough to make it an effective staff.

Hmm... looks interesting.
It wouldn't come apart during dueling?

I definitely would love to see how that mechanism works up close. I've been thinking about something like that for my own Initiate staff.

I haven't seen the finished product yet but the prototypes along the way were all very solid and would stand up very well to fighting.

Please tell how you were able to accomplish that! I really was looking into how to do something similar, but you seem to have nailed it!

Thanks for the response. This version (which is by no means final) is just a prototype/proof of concept to get it off he ground. It is based off a simple 1/4 turn coupling with quick release. The mechanism is a bit loose when coupled so I am trying to solve that. Regardless, it is very tough and will not come apart in dueling. The problem is that the tighter it gets, the more difficult it is to connect. I have a few ideas.
We have a couple more things to try, this is the 1/4 turn, next is the sleeve version. I am hoping to be able to have it happen in hilt so the saber can be flush when coupled, and be nice and tight.
I will be open sourcing this project as we continue.
I did this because I was disappointed some one hadn't already. I am glad there is interest.

I have been brainstorming on this very same subject lately. The internal Idea is nice, maybe a slip in module unit for each hilt, spring loaded pressure points to keep it snug. The 1/4 turn is a must. The only thing would be venting for the sound if you were not going stunt. Hmmm... I wish I had more mechanical knowledge and some good tools!

. Hmmm... I wish I had more mechanical knowledge and some good tools! This sort of thing is no longer as out of reach for many people as it used to be. There are Maker Shops springing up all around the country. Here's an example: http://maker-works.com/If you can find something like this anywhere near you the opportunity to learn the skills and have access to the tools becomes much more attainable.

There are dozens of ways of doing a disconnect. The best is the simplest, cleanest, quickest design. Looks like you are well on your way to that. That is a fast disconnect.
