Hey, Wesari here.  I am a huge Star Wars dork, and am old enough that I was in the theater watching ANH as a kid!  I have been building prop sabers for Halloween for years, as well as other props (built a full, screen accurate Boba Fett with the help of another big site designed for that) as well as blasters, etc, for my friend and I for our stormtrooper costumes.

I have an original Graflex 3-cell that I am hoping to convert into a working bladed saber, and hopefully with the help of this site and the forums I won't muck it up!!

Thanks,

S

You, sir, have achieved win. Welcome to the forums! Kudos on landing that Graflex, and good luck loading it up with US parts! Are you planning to put Obsidian Sound in it? I think you'd be the first to do so, which would be pretty darn cool. I'd love to see how that looks finished. Smiley

A graflex converted for dueling sounds like an epic saber. Welcome.

Considering putting sound in it, I have already tapped the bottom to put an ANH d-ring on it, and would likely just port the bottom of the saber again for sound holes.  I've not played with dimensions yet but might have to use o-rings or do some crafty building to make it all not jostle around.  Once I take out the original upper internals of the Graflex, while still leaving the plug, light hole, etc, I will see what I can do, I think the top bulb flex-clamp is wide enough to encircle the blade, which will make for a cool effect.  I'm guessing I'll have to get more creative when it comes to a blade holder (proably use aluminum piping inside with a retention screw, welded in with allumalloy).  Since I'm building a bunch of Steampunk stuff for my friends this year (backpack, flintlock blaster, etc) I won't have a lot of time to mess with my own.  I'm hoping US can assist in making this as time-vacuum resistant as possible.

I am considering going with the obsidian but I don't really need all the options, I want this to be pretty simple.  I also have a 2 year old so funds are an issue!  I may have to go with lights first, then sound (and then, action...).

Either way, should be a fun project!  I have an email out to the info side asking about some of the configs, as well as dimensions for the speaker and LED setup.  If I do end up going this route, I will definitely create a thread for "how to".
