ah, now this is relevant to me.
I started on an outfit around halloween last year (just after, but that's my sense of timing for ya), and - as I am know to do - went to the nearest fabric shop and bought several square meters of various black fabrics (still not sure if I'm going for a sith look, or if it's because they were out of browns and tans...) the cloak I made, and aside from the slighty tight arm joints, I love. nailed the hood. eventually.
the tunic/top bit was... different.
I used a thinner fabric, and also tried taking measurements from some T-shirts I wear. the result was... acceptable. on a dark night. somewhere far away.
don't get me wrong, if I hold it right it looks fine, but it's passable - and no more.
so recently, having finished up a chunk of work and gotten some money (two facts not related), I decided to retry the tunic.
new fabric, new design, everything.
the fabric I'm using is thicker, the same as the cloak. I'm not an expert, so I can't say much more than that.
as to the design, I'm more or less copying the design of my old Kendo top bit (still not sure what the top bit's called), which fits, and seems simple enough.
hopefully, this should work out, but as I'm only about halfway done, I'll have to keep you posted on that.
but long story short: martial art uniforms are good, though making it yourself allows you to fix certain details (sleeve length, etc) just stick to the whole measure twice, cut once idea. and when I say measure twice, i mean three times. from two angles. with fourteen measuring tapes.
good luck on the build, I hope this has helped.
