I'm looking into making my own sith costume and I don't want some generic costume bought from some site. My first question is what would be a good base for the tunic and pants? I've read that a karate uniform may be a good way to start but I'm not sure of the sizes , I'm not a small man(6 foot tall and around 280 pounds) and I don't know what size I should look at possibly getting. The sizing charts I have seen seem to be a bit off for my size, for my weight the height for the uniform is for a man around 7 feet tall. So if I were to get a karate uniform the sleeves are going to be super long and the pants I can simply trim because the pant cuffs will be tucked into the boots. As for the tabbards, how long should I make them for my size?As for the belt ,I plan on getting a leather weight lifting belt thats four to six inches wide and the robe I will most likely be getting from Mystic Merchants. So if anyone has any other ideas that would be great, I'm open for any other options.

Not really sure. I say just get maybe 2 yards of fabric for each part, then see how much you'd need and if you have any left over than that'd be good. Can't wait to see your costume done.

ah, now this is relevant to me.

I started on an outfit around halloween last year (just after, but that's my sense of timing for ya), and - as I am know to do - went to the nearest fabric shop and bought several square meters of various black fabrics (still not sure if I'm going for a sith look, or if it's because they were out of browns and tans...)
the cloak I made, and aside from the slighty tight arm joints, I love. nailed the hood. eventually.

the tunic/top bit was... different.

I used a thinner fabric, and also tried taking measurements from some T-shirts I wear. the result was... acceptable. on a dark night. somewhere far away.

don't get me wrong, if I hold it right it looks fine, but it's passable - and no more.

so recently, having finished up a chunk of work and gotten some money (two facts not related), I decided to retry the tunic.

new fabric, new design, everything.

the fabric I'm using is thicker, the same as the cloak. I'm not an expert, so I can't say much more than that.

as to the design, I'm more or less copying the design of my old Kendo top bit (still not sure what the top bit's called), which fits, and seems simple enough.

hopefully, this should work out, but as I'm only about halfway done, I'll have to keep you posted on that.

but long story short: martial art uniforms are good, though making it yourself allows you to fix certain details (sleeve length, etc) just stick to the whole measure twice, cut once idea. and when I say measure twice, i mean three times. from two angles. with fourteen measuring tapes.

good luck on the build, I hope this has helped.

quick side note: if you're just buying stuff, a kendo top (Gi?) may do the trick. they look the part, are reasonable comfortable, and have shorter sleeves than karate outfits (I believe. mine go to about my elbows.)
