ok so i've thought about this and i think it would be sweet if we could get some kind of saber tournament going on. it'd be really cool to get some new competition (mine sucks now) and plus i'd like the chance to crack some jedi skull, and i'm sure others feel the same way. we could set up regional brackets from anyone who wants to join even have varying skill classes and have that. this would be hard but if the winners of those regionals want to they could face each other and find away to get to each other. maybe by us like finding sponsors or idk selling tickets or something and that can go to travel expenses. as for rules have some sort of standard protective gear and score it like epee and get some unbiased person to ref. we could even have different types of battles like one on one and battle royales and power matches (one vs 2 or 3) just whatever and of course Sith vs Jedi but this is just a little bit of what i was thinking i'd really like to see what you all think about this

I've been working on a pretty extensive system for rules, points, etc. ... but yeah... it's going to take a while for me to figure out when to just "present it" and try to help make it more popular... Especially since it seems clear that HUNDREDS of people out there probably want things "their own way". So it's hard to know what everyone might agree on. All I'm going to do is try to have a COMPLETE system for starters... and people can modify it as they so choose. As for organized tournaments that intend to draw many folks from many walks of life, that will be VERY tough until a a SINGULAR general "sparring system" is recognized throughout the overall LED saber community. Then... people have to actually experiment with it for a long time... and finally... when enough people are sort of "used to" that style of scoring, rules, organization & structure... a "big huge event" could be attempted. It's reminding me a little of the initial sabersmith gathering that was held in Cali so many years ago... and the 2nd one is only happening this weekend. After that... who knows where it will go, but... it takes TIME... fo shoooowwww...

This sounds like a really awesome idea! We'd all probably run into each other there, showing off our favorite sabers. Good stuff! That said, Novastar has a good point. It'd be a nightmare to attempt without a structured definition of rules and regulations. I mean hell, fencing tournaments are FULL of screw ups and arguments concerning rules and they have been around since... well since people still killed other people with swords

This seems interesting. I'd LOVE to see it actually be attempted, but like nova said that's a long way away.

As a man who practiced several sword-fighting sports, I do think that, if you wanna learn how to fight with a sword properly, it's better for you to turn to Kenjutsu : this martial art is based around ancient japanese sword styles and techniques, without the philosophical concern of a lot of today martial arts. As my master said repetitively : "A saber is a weapon, Kenjutsu an art of killing" (yeah, sounds a bit like Rurouni Kenshin -^, but my master liked this anime). I've been training one year in this way of saber fight, and it was the more impressive year I had training in sword using ! Plus, one special school, the Niten Ichi Ryu, is specialized in two-sabers fighting. Remember you something ?

I agree with you that Kenjutsu is a fine art, and will indeed turn you into a skilled swordsman. My friend Artorius is an example of that. However, fencing has its own advantages. While it seems like the "swordfighting" aspect has been diluted by electric equipment and right of way, I'm sure Master Novastar can attest that it does teach you valuable skills in swordsmanship. It takes a little bit to see how to adapt the ideas of fencing to actual swordsmanship, but you nonetheless can do it - the skills you're learning (attacks, parries, distance) are universal. Actually my brother is heading off to college soon and has to take two Physical Education classes - he's looking at Longsword as well as some other martial arts classes. I wish I had classes like that at my school!

Novastar, yeah i understand that but i thinks its good to just kinda put the idea out into at least a small part of the saber community so we an get it underway ya know? that way its more then oone person contributing to the rules and setting it up

Master Novastar (and other Masters) I was wondering would/could there be a way to include competitions, possibly based on age groups, for people more interested in performing katas in the 7 forms versus sparring?

Forms competitions might be a bit easier to develop...from the perspective of the competitor. We'd need a cadre of qualified judges, and categories in which to perform...it seems there's at least one lightsaber forms dvd out there that someone on this forum might know about *hinthinthintMASTERCAINEMASTERNOVASTARhinthinthint* that could provide an intriguing starting point...

I to practise Kenjutsu, I use this as a base for saberwork, however I have done fencing as well but this was many years ago before # got into Kenjutsu, I found that the fencing helped as was starting my kenjutsu training which I have now been at for over 10 years.

That is the general idea! It's also why it will take me a LONG time to complete the "system" (again, an offshoot/side portion of NCSCS) for everything I'm looking to add. But yes, I certainly wish to cover as many bases as possible... it will just--uh... take a while.
