Warning - Minor spoilers ahead

When I heard they were remaking Ghostbusters my initial knee-jerk reaction was "NOOOOOO!". However, after giving it some time to sink in I thought maybe they could do a good job. And then came the first trailer, which was really REALLY bad. Not because it was starring four women, but because it just wasn't funny. And since then, every new marketing release has just added fuel to the fire that the movie (with a $250 million dollar budget) is awful.

Obviously I am not one of those ignorant commentators who is hating on the movie because it is starting women. However, the job of a comedy is to make people laugh and I have seen nothing so far that proves that this movie will be funny.

Also, in movie terms, it is not a good sign that the the embargo on critic reviews lifted today, only 5 days before the official release of the movie. Anyway, click on the link for the official review from the Holywood Reporter

And this link on Screen Rant contains a number of sound bites from other critics

Wonder how much some of the critics are getting paid to talk good about it.

I never had a problem with it being all female.  I do, however, have an issue with one of the leads being Melissa McCarthy who, to me, isn't funny.  I don't care for that "zany" style of humor that she seems to prefer.  To me, it's just stupid.  Add to that the fact that it was written and directed by Paul Feig who, in my opinion, makes dreadful looking films, and it looks like a train wreck waiting to be released.  I've watched all of the trailers hoping to see something that would make me want to see the film and I haven't even chuckled once, much less laughed out loud.  And, I'd have said all of this with a cast of four men, or a cast of both men and women.

Now, I do like the original film.  I think Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis did a great job writing it.  While it's not the funniest or best movie ever, it is certainly funny and has many quotable moments. (we were doing the "he slimed me" bit recently at work) Everyone did a good job and the effects are downright fantastic for 1984.  It's a great movie from my childhood and one I still enjoy.  That's not to say I would be opposed to a decently done sequel or reboot, even one with four women as the title characters, just not this one.

One good thing about the new movie is that the originals are back in stores, I plan to get the Blu-Ray combo pack this week, after I get paid.  Ghostbusters II isn't as good as the first one, but I'll watch it again.

Another review, which is actually really well balanced (spoiler talk begins about halfway through the video)
