A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away - well, actually today - in the heart of Ultimo, the expanded universe that is the setting for the Star Wars series touched down at the Powerhouse Museum.

More than 200 original artefacts, models, and costumes from the film franchise on display, on loan from director George Lucas' own archive.

The pre-production drawings are a fascinating insight into the genesis of the series.

Hopes this doesn't offend anyone, I know there was a lot of flack on the "Slave Leia" costume, dolls, and toys.

He was very particular about every detail, and so to help get every detail, paint it out, sketch it out.

"(He would) do it over and over again until it looked perfect," Laela French from Lucas Museum of Narrative Art told 9News.

For example, did you know Yoda was going to be called Minch? Or that Luke Skywalker could well have been Lucy?

"This is Luke as a girl, looking down on Tattooine. Luke as a girl became the sister Leia, but that came in like the third or forth draft, not initially," Ms French said.

The star ships of Star Wars were inspired by this world's military tools and history, craftsmen raiding schoolboy model kits of ships, tanks and planes.

"German tanks were a favourite, and they would take all the bit pieces and break them out and organise them on tables, throw away all the directions, and then steal the design pieces off them," Ms French explained.

And arch-villain Darth Vader still chills 40 years on.

"He's still a bad guy, but like a beloved bad guy, and that's very unusual and rare, and I think a part of it is a fabulous design," Ms French said.

"Even if you've never seen a Star Wars film, you know exactly what a Darth Vader is or what a storm trooper is, and that's amazing.”

A video from 2012 but it's the same exhibition going Down Under.

Hi Infinit,

Some of those artefacts look like the ones from the exhibition that took place in London a few years back.

The process of model building from scale model kits is known as "Kit-Bashing" and even today they use parts from Airfix or Revel kits...but the clever thing is they now use 3D generated copies of the parts because real solid kits are getting rarer! (Adam Savage from the show Mythbusters posted a video about kit-bashing on his Tested channel on YouTube)

One final thing I read, I believe Han was going to be a green skinned reptilian alien voiced by Marlon Brando, luckily Harrison Ford got the gig instead!

Great share point incoming.

Hey there Tyeth. I believe it is the same exhibition.  Most of these are from George's personal collection.  I didn't know about kit-bashing nor did I know about Han.  Thanks, have a point back

What an awesome share!  Fun to look and read through, Infinit01 thanks.  I learned a few things I'd never heard before behind the creative of this fine universe.  Point!
