This is a visual representation of our Stellar Neighborhood, you are able to click and zoom; they even have a tour set up that will fly you from our Sun to the edge of our galaxy.

No download needed, just enjoy.  Smiley

It's not working with my browser  Sad

Apparently it's optimized for Chrome and is not guarantied to work with other browsers.

Would have loved to see it though.

Even without watching, I can tell you that you have only seen a very small part of out Galaxy. The Milky Way contains a few hundred billion stars. So 100000 is actually only a tiny amount of stars.

Nevertheless, I'm sure it's very impressive.

I prefer Celestia with an add-on database for 2,000,000 stars. Now that's cool. You have to install and configure it, but it lets you view the Milky Way from any, really any point of view and see the exoplanets we've discovered so far. Except you can't explore the "Unknown Regions", of course.

Of course, what we have to think about practically is the Solar System and the closest stellar neighborhood. The former is already explored and, I hope, will be industrialized and tamed in our lifetimes. The latter wil open up to us if Dr.Harold White's FTL drive will turn out to be a reality.
