Like most people I watched Star Wars starting with the original trilogy. I was wondering what you would do or have done for someone who hasn't seen any of them yet. Do you recommend they watch them as we did starting with episode IV or do you think they could or should start with episode I as maybe Lucas might have intended? Also does it make a difference on order if they're an adult or a child? Your thoughts and reasoning appreciated.

Absolutely OT first.  Order: IV, V, VI, I, II, III.  In my mind, this is the only way to watch them.

Exactly, or the whole plot twist with luke and vader, and even palpatine as sidious doesnt happen. Thats how I watched them with my girlfriend and she thoroughly enjoyed them! Smiley

Depends. If the person isn't all that interested, I'd recommend the Prequels first, since the slowest movie in the series is IV, and I've seen people give up on it because they sleep through the whole thing. Otherwise, the Originals come first.

They sleep through the whole thing because they are too used to all of the unnecessary explosions and horrible plots of all of these new movies Grin Seriously though, I loved the original trilogy because of the slower pacing of the movies. I wish movies could go back to that.

But back on topic...

I think you should watch it in this order:

Original trilogy
Episode I
Episode II
Clone Wars Micro-Series: Volume 1 - Chapters 1-20
Clone Wars Micro-Series: Volume 2 - Chapter 21
The Clone Wars Animated Movie
The Clone Wars Animated Series
Clone Wars Micro-Series: Volume 2 - Chapters 22-25
Episode III

Reasoning: At the end of Episode II, the Clone Wars begins. The Clone Wars Micro-Series tells of the events that happen in the Clone Wars. At the end of Chapter 21, however, Anakin becomes a Jedi Knight. The animated movie/series tells of his adventures as a Knight,  so after you watch that, you can go back to finish the Micro-Series, which leads right up to Episode III.

Way to go above and beyond on the order. Thanks.

True, you wouldn't get the plot twist with Vader being Luke's father or even Leia being his sister if you watch the newer trilogy first. Not sure about Palpatine. Was never surprised by that one. But yeah this would be the deciding factor I think.

I think that Hobbit has the very best idea.  You get the basic plot and then everything else expands and fills any holes that might exist.  Due to the technology available during the times the films were made, I would never recommend someone seeing the Prequels first.  For fun, I have watched them in numerical order and the jump from III to IV just is missing something.  Hard to explain.

Wasn't meaning so much a surprise for palpatine being sidious (you can tell the moment he appears in hologram form in theed) as much as seeing how his dark empire came together and the planning of manipulating anakin. That for me was a major factor in watching OT first.

Hobbit's way, hands down. Assuming of course they wish to watch the shows. But I provide an addendum to that list.... After Ep VI, go back and watch the Holiday Special.  Grin *dodges stones and rotten fruit*

Upon reading the thread title, my smarmy side wanted to reply with "Put the movie in and press 'Play'..." but I have to agree with Hobbit's post.
