Okay, so I'll tell about my concerns more verbosely. It's about my old Tolkienverse character, Lord Narvellon. He's an Elf who was fairly active during the First Age and remains so still; there's a reason for that, it lies in his complex personality and his sense of an unfulfilled duty and unfinished atonement.

Hmmm that might present a few issues, being that old...the main and most significant issue is that an elf Lord is likely to never travel outside the borders of Elf controlled zones, being an Elf treasure and all.

Sounds like a great NPC though.

How about considering a slightly younger version of the same character?  Maybe one that has not reached the Lord title yet?

This one character has issues. Namely, he seeks to atone for what he did during the First Age (he was the leader of a rebellion against Morgoth and was generally little better than his foe). If he doesn't, he will not be let back into the West. And if he will sit on his ass and send followers to do everything, he won't get anywhere, and eventually become disembodied and stuck in Middle-Earth for good. That's why he goes out of his way to help the Free Peoples prevail, personally.

Galadriel (who was in a very similar situation) was sitting in Lorien, waiting for an opportunity to prove herself comes to her and generally angsting. Narvellon, on the other hand, is a much more action oriented guy and actively seeks what can he do. He is more like Gandalf, a White Council's specialist on covert actions against the Enemy like him. He has a unique experience of opposing the Enemy's works in Enemy's own realms, where and when all seems lost (the rebellion of his youth took place just before the War of Wrath, in Morgoth-controlled Beleriand), something no other Elf possesses. That's why the Council started to ask Narvellon for help when the threat of Sauron resurfaced and the Wise could see no means to thwart it.

Some semi-serious trivia: it was Narvellon who gouged the other eye of Sauron.

Narvellon's lordship is an island, Tol Fuin (Tol Thyn) near the coast of Lindon. Most Noldor of Lindon dwell there, leaving the continental land to Sindar and Teleri. Narvellon chose this little piece of land because it's a remnant of Dorthonion, where his home was and his rebellion took place back in the First Age.

Okay, one of the rules that I made, since it is an RP set up, is that no elves from the First Age can be present. They must be born after SA 600... I think?

Rina why not make a new character?

To be completely honest I can not imagine any RPG would allow a character that powerful and iconic unless it was a uber powered game, which I would never play in...that sort of game never interested me.

But a character that is on par with the key characters in the story is a bit much to ask

The problem is that I do not associate myself with any other character in Arda. But there's a solution. Perhaps, I can play NPCs? Maybe not all of them, but a part of them?

First off, I want you to play.

Secondly, NPCs are non-player characters...as in run by the GM for purposes of turning the world around the player characters.

Thirdly, how about an elven child of the character you came up with?

The issue is power levels...everyone else is starting with a character that  could provide color to the original war story but the character you are suggesting is atypical elf for JRR and on par with the most powerful elves in any story of his making.

Players are not allowed to play Ishtari or 1st age characters.

That said, if my understanding of JRR's intent and notes to be correct, an elf wishing to act in a way uncharacteristic to the way they live...seeking to have their own free will and do what they want in a selfish aspect rather than for the good of the people, the first step is to give up their grace and become mortal.

If you are interested in being a really old elf that is now mortal, as per Elrond's brother Elros, losing the elf aspects...that might work...not sure about the others and how they feel but it is just a game, perhaps?

I agree and more.  While I really do want you to join the game, I don't think it would be wise to condone a character of that power and importance.  A character like the one you described directly interacts with important aspects of the story and would change the nature of the WotR.

You could always play a slightly younger Elf as suggested by Tasardur, or try something out of your comfort zone such as a Dwarf or a Man.

Besides, a character of that magnitude would have been mentioned in cannon. I'm sorry, but I agree with Rel and Nekesus on this one.

I do not insist on playing this character. In fact, I do not insist on playing any character anymore, and what I am offering is technical assistance, namely assistance in GMing, making rules and making the game fun for everyone else.

A non player GM assistant/backup/sounding board is a neat idea
