What about a simple mutation that allows one to fully be able to control how they use their brain and at will use all 100% of it which would incur some immense things like forcefields and the ability to telekinetically pick up massive objects or maybe when your carry a heavy backpack and want a bit of help you use a teeny bit of telekinesis.

And the ability to interface with mechanical and electrical machinery would be cool.

Welcome to the forums!

Ah yes...describe the force you do hmmm eh heheheh eh

For a game I often work in the force.  As the control aspect is significant I usually have these types fall into a wizard or sorcerer career path...focusing their skills to honing and controlling the power or connection to power within them.

I do try to avoid the magic cheeto that is telekinesis that can be and do all things...just too powerful.

TK flight...yes
TK strength boost...yes
TK speed...yes
TK manipulation with dexterity...yes
TK manipulation with strength...yes
etc.

But all of those with the same character, no.  Just too much unless there is some margin for risk.

I ran a Scanners type game where there was no limit of power the players could use.  Each character had a secret power aspect, a hidden card...like command or pyrokinesis...and any player could use any application at any level (applied 1D6 for each level of use...a mundane punch was 1-2D6 and a 9mm was 4D6+6...average person could take 10-12 point before being stunned and 18-20 before death).

But...each level of use came with a risk...each use required a strain test and if failed then a check for damage...if extreme success then it would grant free D6 usage or repair of prior damage.

1D6...05% of failure with risk check due massive feedback and energy flowing through body/brain
(01-05% fails...95-00% extreme success)

So if Stormhall wanted to TK push Luna across the city park...a need to hit would be taken into account and then power level applied, say 10D6 because Luna is tough also...this power level is hidden before rolling...Luna defends with a TK push and selects 10D6 also.

Stormy...10D6...1463252634=36
Luna...10D6...1612341236=29

Advantage to Stormy of 7...so without any other cards or such applied the two TK pushes smash together and Luna ends up being pushed back 7' or taking a decent solid hit of damage (same value as getting punched really hard or kicked).

Both check for risk...

Stormy...10D6 is 10x05%=50%...01-50% is risk failure (95-00% extreme success)
Luna...10D6 is 10x05%=50%...01-50% is risk failure (95-00% extreme success)

Stormy...52%...failure
Luna...44%...success

Stormy checks the chart and rolls for results...migraine -15% for power usage/focus for the next hour

etc.

Without some measure of limit or restriction the TK becomes too much like a video game...which is fine for a video game but makes a cooperative game nearly impossible...when all the characters can do anything then the bad guys and gals need to be able to do the same...then it is gods walking the earth...and that makes a meh game IMO.

But I do like me some TK in moderation for sure  Smiley

The Force remained the ultimate force in the galaxy, despite the inventions of lightsabers and superweapons.

So basically the Force is the most OP ability in the entire universe before Lightsabers came around.

The force is life.

The cycle of life, in a full circle of creation and order through destruction and chaos.

In some aspects all powers would be from the force if it exists in the setting in question.

As far as OP...it is only over powered when taken out of context.

A writer can balance a situation because he controls all the characters within a story.

A video gamer has some measure of balance because she or he can only access what is available and built into the game.

A role player (pen and paper) that has full force abilities would be OP because there is no check or balance, just power and ego.

Not all force users are the same by any means...the Yodas and Vaders were unique in most all considerations and such power levels are noted as iconic...and should be out of reach of player characters as too much power eliminates the need to role play...if no one can stop you then there is no resistance...and thus no drama...no story.

You are a person living in a Pandora style of jungle...full of life...all kinds of life...most of it does not respect your intelligence or place in the universe...you are just another potential meal for most everything around you.

Given this setting...with limited technology, remains of a long lost age...which direction would you prefer to go with a character?

1. mutant human with modifications such as unique vision, enhanced physicality (strong, tough, dexterous), and perhaps a bit of skin coloration for camo

2. mutant human with ability to shape plant shape, form, and function (over time) creating homes, walls, bridges, groves, etc.

3. mutant human with an animal hybridization...humanoid with 25%-50% animal characteristics (a single animal)

4. mutant animal with human level intelligence and modifications such as thumbs, prehensile tail, and vocal chords while retaining the majority of the original form of the animal stock (looks like a cat but has human level intelligence)

Which would you feel more drawn towards?

I would be more drawn towards the first, but I do find a heavy interest in the second and fourth as well. The third isn't really my style.

I just read the first and last pages of this topic, so I have no idea what's going on so far, but for a couple mutations of my own,

Flying squirrel natural wing suit. This would allow people to glide from ruined structure to ruined structure without having to risk engaging predators bellow.

A natural water sack much like a camels that would allow for a much longer survival period without immediate access to water.

A thickened layer of skin, like a rhino hide to protect from projectiles and predators. This would also prevent the poison from snake bites and insect stings from entering the bloodstream.

Gills: Obviously.

Thicker padding on the feet and hands, making shoes and gloves obsolete.

Improved base senses such as hearing and smell.

Wings of any kind. Anything that could allow for flight even with a long take off.

Echolocation (I believe someone already said this)

More body hair for warmth in colder climates.

Riddick vision

Increased resistance to disease, to the point of natural immunity.

Immunity to radiation.

Increased lung and heart size.

Improved multistage digestive system.

Eyes set closer to the sides of the head for those groups of Humans that spent more time running than fighting.

Decreased bone density allowing for higher jumps and faster running, but also has the drawback of weaker bones. This drawback is countered by increased muscle mass directly around the bones.

In a near ruined Earth setting...lots of dusty rusty stuff and not so many people...which of these most appeals to you (for character consideration)

1. Sense of smell equal to a silvertip grizzly bear (x7 better than a bloodhound)

or

2. Mutli-spectrum eyesight...see in pitch black, fog, etc.

or

3. Ultra efficient skin...absorbs moisture from the air, releases toxic gases but retains water, keeps the person cool without sweating, etc.

Hard one. These are all rather appealing.

The first is great. The ability to track anything using scent would be a nice hunting tool. You could also smell food, a mile away. I wonder if you could smell other people as easily, and if you could pinpoint location with the scent?

The second is good as well. You could become successfully nocturnal which would help a lot while you hunted down sleeping prey and kept yourself alive. The problem is, though, it's based entirely on what you can see. Sight is a sense that is too overly relied on already.

This could keep you alive in a moist/toxic environment without a need to find a source of water. Good, but only in certain situation. In the desert, you would still need to find water as the air would be too dry for your skin to absorb it. However, the lack of sweat to keep cool would help retain water just the slightest amount to be helpful....

Hell. I can't decide. They're all great in their own ways.

Yes and yes...pin point, age of scent, and other details that we can barely grasp Smiley

This level of sight would be hard to imagine, but saying others are looking at the world through a 12" black and white 70's TV and you would see it as through a wide flat screen full color HD TV for a starter...see ultraviolet, infrared, low/no light green/blue, etc.

Ah the illusion of the arid desert environment...every night the temperature drops in most deserts creating a moisture dump...this mutant would gain significant moisture throughout the night  Smiley  Think Dune Fremen still suits.

Not all deserts get moist. I live in the Mohave. It's hot and dry most of the summer. Cold at night, yes, but still dry. I'm not gonna deny that you probably still no more than I do, though. But still. You have my reasoning. Tongue

So, the mutations are pretty advanced. Not simple by any means.

I could smell everything. Gender, pregnancy, age, location, health. All of it. Interesting. I wouldn't mind this by any means.

The eyesight would be amazing though. Like predator vision.

I wonder... which would you choose, Rel?

The skin one is fun...but I could manage within reason with proper clothing layers and such...unless the setting was truly dry and that would be sad and depressing...this would a be a great choice, but for me this would be third.

Second...the sight.  The sight would be amazing and so very useful.

My first pick would be the ultra heightened smell.  As noted...tracking, CSI'ing, ID'ing, etc. nearly immeasurable.

In most cases I would be happy with any functional mutation within reason, even minor ones can be used to great effect if used with intent and focus.

Agreed.

So, what's all of this for, anyway. You said something about an RPG?
