He had the "remastered editions" of Star Wars and was going to show them instead of the original theatrical cut, because this was his dream all along, and that way we would no longer hate him for the changes he made...

but the cinema's weren't up the challenge of the futures(?) CGI and thus what was seen was the uncut version, hence Lucas would have to wait for technology to catch up and he realised that he couldn't change time so would have to go for plan B.....
