With FedEx, you can print out a form, sign it and tape it to your front door. Though, they have to be able to take it, so it can't be inside a screen door that locks. Anyway, you're basically pre-signing for it. I did that once with an Ultrasabers order because I had to go to work, and they took the form and left the package. Basically, they need some kind of signature on file to release the package.
Well, the USPS doesn't seem to know where my latest US package is, it's been "in transit to next facility" for two days now.
Yesterday being declared a Federal holiday didn't help matters. Fortunately, the motor we needed for our clothes dryer was coming via FedEx, so that was delivered. But, it's frustrating when the tracking has BS on it, and no solid information. And, the USPS saying "your package is arriving later than expected (duh) but it's still on its way" doesn't set my mind at ease. They've lost packages before and won't admit it on the tracking page.
