After The Avengers stole away with over $1.5 billion at the global box office, it should come as no surprise that Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has quickly become one of the most-anticipated television shows of the upcoming fall premiere season. Early trailers for the ABC series hint at a fun twist on the cop drama formula – with super-powered beings and ties to the larger Marvel shared cinematic universe.
Easily the most recognizable face to join the series, Clark Gregg returns as Agent Phil Coulson, a mysterious reappearance that producers promise will be explained at some point in the series. However, the show is not called Phil Coulson: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., and despite a starring role for the fan-favorite Phase 1 character, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will actually follow an entire team of the government’s finest.
To help viewers get to know some of the supporting characters that will join Agent Coulson in the fight against terrestrial and extraterrestrial villainy, Marvel has released the first of (presumably) several teaser videos introducing the new S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. While there’s no guarantee that the studio, in partnership with network ABC, will release future Agent intro featurettes, it’s highly likely that more will be unveiled in the build-up to the show’s fall debut.
This first video features Agent Grant Ward (played by Brett Dalton) – a charming but no-nonsense black ops specialist who, based on the teaser video (which you can at the top of the page), appears relatively new to Coulson’s S.H.I.E.L.D. team. Ward is clearly an experienced field operative but his confusion at seeing a “superhero” followed by Agent Coulson’s explanation of “the whole world getting in on the action,” indicates that Ward’s clearance level gets a bump in the pilot episode. Still, judging by his stern approach to spy work, it’s unlikely that future revelations will cause him much pause.
Much of the footage seen in the teaser video has already been shown in prior Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. trailers and clips, but it’s interesting to see them used to highlight what Dalton describes as Ward “not being so great with the people skills.” The teaser once again highlights two of the best moments in prior marketing – both belonging to Ward - as the Agent gets snarky with new recruit Skye (played by Chloe Bennet) and lists the component words in the S.H.I.E.L.D. acronym only to joke that “someone really wanted our initials to spell out S.H.I.E.L.D.”
Still, many mysteries remain, since the Ward video doesn’t provide any new clues as to the identify of that individual in the yellow hologram or hints as to who exactly actor J. August Richards (Angel) is playing in the show (aside from being the “superhero” Coulson pointed out earlier).
As mentioned, there’s no guarantee that we’ll see further “Level 7 Access” videos for the remaining Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but it wouldn’t be a stretch to assume that more introduction features are forthcoming – especially for the mainline characters listed below:

Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) – Expert pilot and martial artist.
Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) – Brilliant engineer.
Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) – Genius bio-chemist.
Skye (Chloe Bennet) - New recruit and computer hacker.
We’ll certainly know more when Joss Whedon brings Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to Comic-Con 2013.
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. begins airing on ABC this fall on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET.
