Switches, breakage, and AV switches

How common is it that a non-AV switch gets broken, and how do they typically get broken? Are they that fragile?
If it matters, I'm planning on buying an Archon, and debating the spending on the AV switch.
The posts I've read have talked about people grabbing your hilt, or you banging your hilt into something...it seems like neither of those should be too common, and it seems like that shouldn't break the switch, unless the switches are kind of fragile.
