Director Kevin Tancharoen looks to build upon the moderately impressive success of his Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series with the second installment, Mortal Kombat: Legacy II, which we now know will debut online on September 26, 2013.

A re-imagining of the popular Mortal Kombat video game-turned-multi-media franchise, Legacy II will expand the scope (and apparently the budget) of the first installment, bringing in more iconic characters from the Mortal Kombat universe, while also creating a sturdier bridge between the realistic and fantastical halves of the MK mythos. You can see what we mean (and a whole lot of action and character appearances) in the latest trailer above.

The first Legacy II trailer gave us a taste of the second season storyline – in which new characters like Liu Kang (Brian Tee), Kenshi (Dan Southworth), Kung Lao (Mark Dacascos) and Ermac (Kim Do Nguyen) join forces with Raiden (David Lee McInnis taking over the role) to battle  forces from the dark realm of Outworld – forces led by none other than the evil sorcerer, Shang Tsung (original Mortal Kombat movie star, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa). As detailed in this latest trailer, there will be a much more serialized storyline than the episodic character-focused installments that made up season 1 – though clearly individual character stories will still be in the mix.

The most impressive aspect of the trailer, however, has to be the much-improved directorial talents of Kevin Tancharoen. After breaking onto the scene with his impressive Mortal Kombat Rebirth fan-film, Tancharoen admittedly stumbled at points while turning the low-budgted Legacy web series into a major media and MK franchise milestone. However, this season 2 trailer shows that some of the most important aspects of the series – namely, the action – has been ramped-up and polished, while the visual effects (especially where ninja characters like Sub-Zero and Scorpion are concerned) have also been  improved over what we saw in the first installment. In addition, scenes like the harrowing events in that diner robbery seem to indicate that Tancharoen’s eye for visual storytelling and gripping thrills/drama has improved, as well – and some of the photography and shots are downright stunning (that temple scene establishing shot is pretty gorgeous).

However, that’s not to say it’s all looking “flawless.” Like season 1, it seems that there will be a bit of unevenness to the storytelling in season 2; the stories centered around Raiden’s chosen heroes look solid, as does the ninja stuff; however, the scene between warring “sisters” Mileena and Kitana once again looks to pale in comparison to its counterparts, making one wonder where other, similar, deficiencies might appear. Season 1 had its fair share of throwaway episodes; hopefully season 2 shaves that number down considerably.
