I've been doing some research on the different Jedi branches: Guardian, Sentinel , and Consular. There's alot of talk of the different philosophies of the 7 forms but I'm curious how the philosophies of the 3 branches come into play? It would seem that most of us all follow a 'Guardian' path as we focus on the martial aspect of Jedi Knights, or Sith Lords. Does anyone on this forum adhere to any of the different branches in there approach to lightsaber combat, or perhaps life in general?

In the TPLA ranking system, Knights follow one of those paths. The Guardians (headed by Master Nero) focus on the nuts and bolts of applying the Forms and philosophies. Very practical.
Consulars (headed up by VorNach) are the emissaries and the depositories for the Forms. They generally focus on Niman and therefore all the Forms to create inner cultivation and later become instructors.
Sentinels (headed up by Uilos) are the odd men out. Often the experimentalists and techies, ( in the words of our Knight Sentinel Lucien Kane) Sentinels lead the way.
That's how we are using the concepts.

In the TPLA ranking system, when does a learner choose one of these paths? Once one path is mastered can another path be undertaken?

I'll be interested to see what paths our future Knights are looking to take up... they all have some very interesting stuff, so I don't imagine it would be an easy choice for too many.

Patience. Work with the Initiate material for a while. The question you are asking is sort of like a college freshman asking: "Once I have been a practicing psychologist for five or ten years what other doctoral degree can I pick up?"

Good point Master VorNoch! I never looked at it that way. When you put it into that perspective, I can see how making a decision on which path to take could be difficult. It's been extremely enjoyable working with the Shii Cho initiate material but I do tend to get a little ahead of myself. Thank you for your advice.

Sentinels weren't usually dual wielders. Guardians were. Sentinels engaged in lightsaber combat less often than either of the two focusing mainly on practical skills. The greats in Ataru were usually sentinels, where Niman and Seresu were practiced mostly by cunsulars. Niman was common amongst Guardians, but Juyo, Makashi and Ataru were the Gaurdians bread and butter. The Classes in SWTOR are not accurate at all. Don't take them as such. As a Sentinel I am prone to using Seresu/ataru/Juyo as my forms. However, the Sentinel is a very practical being wishing words and diplomacy over combat much like a Consular, but always ready for it like a Guardian.

all I know is that I want to be a blademaster just like Lord Qordis, with the saberstaff that comes apart into two sabers for when the poodoo hits the turbine.

I think it's fair to recognise that any Jedi might use any form, and some Jedi might mix and match forms - Obi-Wan trained in Ataru under Qui-Gon, before switching to Soresu and becoming the master of it. He seemed to be a Guardian-in-training, learning Ataru under a Consular who used a largely offensive 'sabre form, before training an archetypal Guardian while becoming 'the negotiator' and mastering the iron-clad defence of Soresu! So, in other words, all of the problems in the prequels came from Obi-Wan not being able to make his mind up... That being said, the path of a Sentinel calls to me moreso than that of a Guardian or a Consular. I guess I like taking the path less travelled And yellow and orange blades are cool.

I just like seeing each persons perspective on them. It's interesting to read the different points of view. Personally, I like the Guardian path at the moment, but I'm so new it's hardly worth thinking about. Sometime later, perhaps.

In short, we're the translators of the massive amounts of canon to something that is workable in a real life setting. We're the ones who look at the Forms and try to figure a few hard rules and some soft rules to help form crafters in their development of their interpretations. We look at different takes of sabers, like Light Sai, light pikes, guard shotos, and go "Hrrm, how could this work as a real weapon." We make the Expanded Universe our Universe. We are the bastard love children of the Jedi Archives and Q Branch.
