Born on the planet Balmorra sometime around 3,650 BBY as Brenton Mentz, Lord Vulpes began his history as the child of a fairly wealthy family working under Empire employment in the Balmorran weapons facilities. Due to the constant warring state of the Great Galactic War and the struggle between the Empire and Republic forces to gain stable control over the planet, the Mentz family was relocated to the Sith Capital world of Dromund Kaas. Growing up, his life was hard and harsh due to the strict and semi-abusive conduct of his immediate family, causing him to grow into an emotionally distraught child who isolated himself from personal contact, as well as some slight health conditions such as ravaged lungs due to the poor conditions of his birth planet and being surrounded by war. At a young age, he founded a harboring passion for scholarly subjects, particularly pertaining to the histories and martial arts, and was immediately placed into the empires finest educational institutes on Dromund Kaas. As an already somewhat traumatized child, he was subjugated to bullying and torture by fellow students, which eventually lead to an emotional outbreak involving the deaths of three students and the discovery of his force-sensitivity. This action did not go unnoticed by the institution’s Sith headmasters, and Mentz was eventually brought before them in order to test his potential as a Sith himself. At first the child denied all accusations, but after a rigorous testing process it was generally accepted that he was capable of undergoing training to become a Sith Acolyte.

It was also a this time that a Jedi spy who as residing on Dromund Kaas took notice of the boy, and attempted to confront the child before the teachings of the Dark Side could corrupt his potential. During an exercise to rid the Dromund woodlands of an overabundance of violent wildlife, Mentz was intercepted by the Jedi and was quickly introduced to the Light Side of the force. It was also at this time that Mentz took a love interest in the Sith Institutions. Having a curiosity of the Force, Mentz took to the Jedi’s teachings with an open mind. However, Mentz was not only torn between the romantic affiliations but also between the teachings of the Sith Institutions and Jedi that tussled in his life, and after several years of being affiliated with both of the Jedi and the Sith, his emotional integrity began to fall apart. By random chance, Mentz discovered that his lover was engaging in outside affairs on him, and in an emotional outbreak, he brought the ceiling down upon an entire group of students, killing them. Fleeing off into the rainy Dromund forests, he slew his Jedi mentor and soon after re-approached the Sith Institutions, vowing himself to the Dark Side for his life. He currently works on attaining the title of Sith Lord.

Mentz is known to be a cunning, blatant, and harsh individual. His studies have led him to be an encyclopedia of Force history and culture, as well as much knowledge about the known galaxy. During his time in the Sith institution, he studied and dignified himself in lightsaber combat with Soresu and Juyo (Forms III and VII) and was known to switch rapidly between the two to diversify and stabilize himself with a powerful defense and offense. This landed him with the title of “Juggernaut”, despite the conditions of his lungs and his physical demeanor. Due to his closed off nature, he often harbors his passions and desires within himself rather than openly displaying them during combat, thus leading to a deadly combination of flowing and calm natured lightsaber form. Aside from this, he was also known for having a relatively high sense of honor, and very fluent in negotiation skills compared to that of a total soldier, and could even be complimented on his later developed social skills and level-headedness. His resilience in both word and combat earned him the name, “Lord Vulpes”, a mark of his mental integrity and hand-to-hand skill level, alongside his family’s wealthy background.

Here we go:
Therayn was born on the planet Kashyyyk, in a small colony of humans. Centered around a Jedi Agricultural Corps outpost, Therayn's father was a Jedi. He was found to be Force-Sensitive, and was taught to use a lightsaber by his father. He apprenticed under his father alongside a fellow Force-Sensitive, a Wookiee named Rrrwook. Although trained by a Jedi, he never officially became one, and as such his designation is more along the Grey spectrum. He was sent on a convoy job to help transport goods from the spaceport to the outpost with Rrrwook, but when they arrived home, they discovered massacre. Every man, woman and child, human and Wookiee alike, lay dead, killed by mercenaries and Dark Jedi agents. Therayn found his father and mother, and cremated their bodies together. As a result of this tragedy, he developed a severe hero complex, and vowed to roam the galaxy, bringing justice and peace wherever he went. Rrrwook accompanied him, keeping him company on his small freighter, and the two Jedi made for a powerful force. All records of their existence, however, cut off after what came to be known as the Dark Pulse, a powerful wave of Dark-Side energy that swept across the face of Kashyyyk. It is not known whether they survived, or even the cause of it, as Kashyyyk's ecosystem made an alarmingly rapid recovery.

My character is different in storyline

Kagemusha shin or kage was only a child he did not know any family or his own birthday he only knew how to survive. As kage was young he had no name his name was later given by his master (name means warrior of shadows from which the name is given because it was like he appeared from the shadows) and Sith Lord darth lustore. Lustore found the boy when he had finished his business (a group of grey Jedi plotting to kill him) on endor. Lustore felt the force through the boy an took him as his apprentice. 10 years later after a life of training kage turned on his master and killed him gaining control of his battleship and crew he tried to figure out his past. He reached kashyyk and there he found two Jedi which he soon killed and found a woman bearing a child. He approached her saying her child may become a powerful sith sensing the force of the childs father in it. Kage decided he would just leave but she stoppe him and asked about his scar on his hand and he said a memory forgotten she said her son ha one and was born 21 years ago. He turned killed the woman and said mother for this I thank you no more bags to hold me. He soon vanished and he resumed terror across the galaxy not for control but sport and word soon spread of him. Kage is 23 now and it is 35 years after the empires rule and a new threat soon emerges he welcomes the game.

Rowan came from a family that has served the Sith as spies and sleepers since the time of the Sith Empire, dating back to Czerez Shyy'ran. As a child, he was discovered by the Jedi council and was sent off to begin his Jedi training. Before he left his family, his father left him an old holorecording showing his family's purpose. Rowan was warned not to let anyone know of it and to not view it until he was deemed Padawan.

When Rowan arrived at the Jedi temple, he kept to himself and didn't try to make friends. Sometimes people wouldn't even notice his presence, even if he was standing next to them. This was a trait of natural Force Camouflage that was passed through his lineage. His training was about average for all younglings and he did not catch the attention of any high ranking Jedi. When the time came for him to build his first Lightsaber and take to his path as a padawan, he viewed the holorecord in secret. It was then that his whole existence had been given meaning.

While under the tutelage of a Jedi knight named Veris Morr, he and his master, along with a few Jedi Council members paid a visit to the newly elected Supreme Chancellor Palpatine that further led him to his destiny. After the meeting, the young Rowan used his Camoflauge ability to sneak past his master and enter the Supreme Chancellor's office. There he confronted the man.

Rowan Shyy'ran told the Chancellor that he sensed the Dark Side in him and ask cautiously if he was a Sith Lord. The Shyy'ran family has not served the Sith since Lord Kaan destroyed them 1500 years before, he told him. The Chancellor was surprised at the young padawan, as he could prove useful. It was then that Darth Sidious revealed himself to the boy and took Rowan on as his personal spy in the Jedi Order.

Throughout his remaining four years as a padawan, Rowan studied the Dark Side in secret. He always watched his master's conversations and interactions with the council while she was blissfully unaware her padawan was feeding information to his true master. After he passed the Trials, Lord Sidious had him taken off planet and trained in the art of assassination. He would then serve as a political assassin when the Clone Wars began. Rowan would mask his true intentions as a Temple Guard for the Jedi Order. His main task in the Order, was to watch a hopeful young Jedi Knight that caught Lord Sidious's eye.

During the Seige of the Temple during Order 66, Rowan was tasked with making sure the clone troops led by newly turned Sith Apprentice Darth Vader entered the Temple unopposed.

Years later, Rowan Shyy'ran served as a Hand to the Emperor and continued his role as Sith Assassin. After the fall of Emperor Palpatine he sent his only son into hiding, and Rowan was never heard from again.

[Darth Cephalus]

Having no known home world but speculated to be extragalactic or possibly even extra-dimensional, Dath Cephalus is a tentacled being associated with the Sith path. Though it is not exactly true to say that he is a Sith, he was trained by one and trains them in turn. A member of an unknown race, Cephalus' body is constructed from cells that contain no midiclorians. This makes him immune to most direct force attacks but prevents him from using the force in any real sense. His cells continuously and rapidly divide providing a fast metabolism and functional agelessness, but giving him a voracious appetite and casing him to extrude small quantities of a viscous ichor from his skin. His body mass is fluid though he usually adopts a form similar to a human but with large eye's, a bulbous head, and tentacles emanating from his face. While having no bones, he is capable of solidifying portions of his mass into something resembling a cartilaginous endoskeleton.

Ancient Sith texts tell of a nameless Sith master who found Darth Cephalus and trained him as a weapon, hoping to capitalize on his force resistance. What this master did not account for was that Cephalus' anatomy contained a different type of sub cellular symbiotic organism in place of midichlorians that allowed him to feed on the force (particularly the emotions associated with the dark side), storing its power in his cells, and use it to mimic force abilities. The most usable form of this dark side energy is that associated with the state of absolute madness or loss of all reason.

During his tutelage at the hands of his master, Darth Cephalus used a type of psionic ability to manipulate his master's dreams, leading him eventually to paranoia and madness. All the While, Darth Cephalus fed on the resulting force energy, storing it in his cells. When the time was right, he overpowered his master by unleashing his pent up powers and consumed the remainder of his energy.
Since this time, Darth Cephalus lived in seclusion, spending a great deal of time in the depths of Mon Calamari. Through his psionic powers, he sends out dreams to prospective Sith students. When they find him, he offers great power in exchange for their loyalty and trains them in the ways of the dark side all the while corrupting their minds to suit his appetite. The more powerful they become with the dark side, the more ready they become for his dread repast.

Ultimately Darth Cephalus has never had such a student survive his training and take his knowledge into the galaxy.

Additionally, Darth Cephalus sometimes takes on certain members of the Yuuzhan Vong as students, who confusing him for their deity Yun-Yammka because of his tentacled form, have pledged themselves to his service. The Vong, who share his estrangement from the force, are capable of learning to use the force in the same way that he does: by stealing and storing it. These can be considered the true students of Darth Cephalus to whom he conveys his knowledge through telepathic images and sensory information, being incapable of proper speech. During their tutelage, Darth Cephalus uses these students to accomplish his designs in the rest of the galaxy. As they near the completion of their training, these students begin to sacrifice parts of their anatomy to their master, as is their custom, to appease his more physical appetites, ultimately sacrificing their lives to feed their lord.

In most worlds he has inhabited, his presence has been felt though he remains secretive. Local legends often speak him and his students in whispers, admonishing their young lest bad behavior lead them within his grasp.
Though he selfdom seeks direct conflict, Darth Cephalus' fluid body makes him a dangerous and versatile lightsaber wielder. He uses a form of clam Niman that relies heavily on soresu technique to draw out a battle while feeding on the emotion of adversary, usually preferring to corrupt rather than slay an opponent.

His weapon is called the Lure of the Deep: a clawed saber that vacillates in color from deep red to bright orange. The saber itself uses a focus produced from the body of its wielder that corrupts the mind of any other who would use it. For this reason, Darth Cephalus often encourages his students to use his lightsaber in their advance training, relying on the grasp of their minds he has accomplished by that point to ensure his safety.

Son of a wealthy family on the galactic core world of Corusant, young Wan'ye Brucca began his life in luxury. His father Wan'ye Tho Mas and mother Wan'ye Mar Tah were prominent political figures whose devotion to their planet was only overshadowed by their devotion to each other and their young son. That ceased in the early days of The Great Galactic War.  Corusant, stretched by fighting a war on too many fronts, fell to a state of urban degradation and crime as its leaders concentrated their efforts on more galactic issues. Brucca and his family were returning from a night of entertainment when an attempted robbery lead to the death of his parents in a hail of blaster fire. The loss devistated their son, leaving him withdrawn and emotionally scarred.

During the years that followed, Brucca inherited the family fortune, which he used to travel the war torn galaxy and observed all manner of injustice perpetrated on different worlds where politicians focused on the big picture to the detriment of the people. He also observed the impact of Jedi and Sith who waged an ideological war on each other, using powers that can only be described as supernatural, as the galaxy crumbled. Young Brucca determined to champion the lesser populations of the galaxy and prevent for them horrors like the one that he experienced as a boy. To do this he would need power.

He soon discovered that he had no aptitude for the force so turned his attentions to the only source of power to rival the force in the known galaxy: the Mandalorians. Traveling under aliases to their homeworld, he found a people humbled by their defeat at the hands of Revan at the end of the Mandalorian wars. His natural prowess in battle and single-minded drive, eventually earned the respect of a Mandalorain names Razal Gool who accepted Brucca as his foster son, treating him as a full Mandalorian, and taught him the ways of the Dha Werda Verda or shadow warriors of the progenitors, from whom he learned the power of darkness and fear.

Eventually he returned to Corusant to find it caught in a cold war between the Republic and the Empire. The Jedi, now discraced had abandoned the world and the Sith, much to everyone's surprise had brought a kind of peace. Returning to his family home, Brucca discovered it a ruin. He moved in none the less.

One night as he sat alone, he remembered an incident he had experienced as a child when he fell into a pit on the family property inhabited by a group of hawk-bats. He recalled as well a strange glow and odd architecture that had terrified him before he was rescued. Suddenly, he felt called to return to the site, where, digging through debris, he uncovered the entrance to an underground complex from the anciant days of the Infinite Empire.
Within, he discovered various pieces of Rakatan technology that he was eventually able to repurpose to harness the powers of the force, allowing him access to powers used by the Jedi and Sith by relaying them through a semi-sentient biological Rakatan computer named Oracle that he had integrated into his Mandalorian battle armor.

Possessed of both the Jedi imperative to protect the weak and the Sith drive towards the accumulation of personal power in order to accomplish this feat, Brucca adopted the title of The Darth Knight and the name Batmandalore: reflecting the hawk-bat cave and his Mandalorian training, the two sources of his power.

On the surface, Wan'ye Brucca is a respected citizen of the republic who lives in his now rebuilt family home. Beneath it, he is the Darth Knight. While politicians squabble and force users wage their war of ideals, Batmandalore protects the citizens of Galactic City through guerilla based scare tactics designed to strike fear into the hearts of those who would harm the innocent. He freely uses different elements of the force by relaying them through Oracle, rejecting the limited concepts of the light side and the dark side. Shunning blasters for the role they played in his childhood loss, his principle weapon is a silver saber staff referred to as the Batsaber.

SO I have started writing the back story of my Sith Lord: Johnathan Ravik

Now here is what I have so far, this is the first part of the intro because when I am done it will cover his rise from a child of Mandalore to his teachings within the Jedi order, leaving to fight as a Mandalorian Knight in the Mandalorian wars, to his rise as a sith lord and finally the corruption that led him to become a renegade Sith Lord... Look forward to advice from both sides (posative/negative)

The Rise of Lord Ravik

   “Ad(son), ab’tuur(today) is the anniversary of your ta’raysh(tenth) cycle, you are now Ge’Verd(almost a warrior) soon you will earn your place amongst the alit(Clan). Earning your buy’ce(Helmet) is only the beginning though Johnathan, remember your Mando’ad(heritage/child of Mandalore), once you’ve earned the title of Verd(warrior) your real training begins amongst the Droten(people). Tal(blood) of the Zakkeg beast is your rite to Clan Ordo. . .But, you will always be Ravik.”

I'm trying to come up with a character now and its hard normally its easy because my personality can never be a villain but let's fave it sith are bad ass so its harder to figure out a character lol

Although it is not proven there is a rumour that Scorpious is the illegitimate son of Darth Malgus. Raised as a slave to a wealthy family, when he stared showing signs of force abilities his owner took the boy to the Sith temple on Dormund Kaas where he began his training. Sona soon showed great promise but to complete his training and become an apprentice he must surrender himself completely to the Dark Side and cut all ties with his former life, the council instructed him to take the lives of all in his masters house saving him for last.


And finally we can reveal ourselves to the Jedi.

Born to Tarnus Hatako and Meela Vaust, Pashiek was discovered to be force sensitive at the age of 3, sometimes causing toys in his room to float toward him through the air. His parents felt they could not reveal his power to the Jedi council, as his father had been cast out from the order for marrying without the council's consent, and Pashiek would most likely be taken away for the entirety of his childhood.

However, following his fifth birthday, Pashiek was stolen away in the night by a Sith known only as Darth Avarus (he took up the title "Darth" in envy of true Sith Lords). From age 5 to 14, Pashiek was trained in the dark side of the force on Coruscant by Avarus, with his master's hope of overthrowing another Dark Lord of the Sith who had supposedly infiltrated the planet undetected by the Jedi order. Through his Sith master, Pashiek was able to gain proficiency with many force abilities, like Force Lightning and Force Repulse.

In 20 BBY, at the peak of the Clone Wars, Avarus was finally defeated by Hatako, after the boy had become fully aware of the suicide mission his master had planned. Pashiek went to the Jedi council, finally revealing his existence, but believing that they were the only ones who could help him find his true path in life. In a controversial vote, the council insisted that Pashiek was to be sent back to his parents on Solaest and not be trained any further as a Jedi. They feared he was more of a threat, being trained in the Sith arts during a time of war and deception, and had no time to train him. Pashiek then returned to his father and mother, only to later be trained as a Jedi for several years under his father.

(There's a lot more to my character, but I'll save it for later.)

I'm still very new to the forum and was really happy when I found this thread. I am currently putting together my Sith cosutme and will be getting an Ultrasaber in the new year. Until then, I am still working on the backstory for two characters: Darth Knox, a Sith acolyte and Darth Praxis, a Sith alchemist and sorcerer, closely linked to the Korriban zombies.

[Darth Tepes]

      Before the Sacking of Coruscant Jedi Haddr Titan and his former Master, U’lun Warna, were on Tattoine tracking the movements of a Sith Lord named Darth Tepes.   Tepes was responsible for many slain Jedi and was a priority target.  Master Warna and Haddr had spent 2 years observing and learning all they could about Darth Tepes.  Currently he was involved in some kind of experiments on Tatooine but the two Jedi had yet to find out what it he was up to.  Following the Sith into a cave hey fell into a trap.  Tepes caused a cave in trapping the Jedi and soon they were surrounded by Sith Acolyte’s led by Darth Tepes.  The fight was brutal.  Master Warna engaged the Sith Lord while Haddr took on the Acolytes.  Haddr had developed an uncoventinal fighting style, he carried 3 lightsabers, one long two short.  He would switch in a fight at every opportunity, never giving his opponents time to adjust to his style.   It proved effective against the Acolytes as he dispatched the group with only minor injuries.  He ran to join his Master’s side to defeat the Sith Lord…but he was too late.  Tepes side stepped a strike from Master Warna and impaled her with his sliver saber.  Haddr’s scream of anguish filled the cave as he rushed towards the Sith Lord.  Darth Tepes had his own unorthodox way of fighting though.  Throwing his Chakram, a sharpened metal circle, the Sith aimed for the Jedi’s leg.  Haddr managed to side step the weapon but it sliced his thigh deeply.  He surged forward, using something to fuel himself he never used before…rage.   But it was not enough.  The chakram being manipulated through the Force  by Tepes came back from behind and sliced the back of the Jedi’s knee causing him to crumple to the ground.  Tepes caught his weapon and walked towards the Jedi and kicked his saber away.  Haddr pulled one of his Shoto’s and managed a glancing blow on the Sith’s face.  Tepes screamed and kicked Haddr in the face knocking him out.
         After four days of sedation Haddr is woken by Tepes, who is now wearing Haddr’s lightsabers as well as an armored mask to cover the wound Haddr delivered.   Tepes activates a holocom and Speaks to Darth Baras.   He asks permission to start his interrogation on the Jedi to see what he knows about the Czerka Corporation and what they are doing on Tattoine.  Baras gives his consent and the torture begins.  It is futile since Haddr knows nothing of Czerka.  After hours Tepes concedes to this fact.   Haddr assures the Sith the Jedi will come for him when he doesn’t report in.  The Sith laughs and informs him the Jedi have been broken in the Attack on Couruscant and that the Republic has signed a treaty with the Sith Empire.  Haddr is struck dumb at these revelations.  But then a new emotion emerges…Anger.  Anger at the Sith for the countless deaths of his Jedi brothers and sisters…his master.  Anger at the Republic for giving in and signing a treaty with the Sith.  Anger at the Jedi…for being too weak to stop the Sith.  Using this new found power Haddr  managed to mentally force push Tepes into the control panel releasing the restraint’s.   Grabbing Tepes before he can recover he punches the Sith knocking the mask from his face.  Haddr grasps the Sith about the throat and begins to squeeze.  Haddr relishes the feel of crushing the life from this demon with his bare hands.  When the Sith lies limp and dead Haddr slumps in fatigue.  What is he to do now; he can’t go back to the temple…he won’t go back to the Jedi.   The holocom pings, Haddr figures it must be Baras calling to see how the info gathering was progressing.  Haddr considers just answering it and letting Baras send people to finish him.. but spotting Tepes’ mask an Idea strikes him.  Quickly stripping the tunic from the dead Sith, he slips it over his torso then places the mask on his face.  He answers the call and is scolded by Baras for keeping him waiting.  Haddr apologizes and informs him the Jedi knew nothing so he was disposed of.   Baras has no idea this is not Tepes.  Given orders to return to the Capital, Haddr ends the transmission.  He sits as his idea germinates in his mind.  He will become Darth Tepes.  He will use this guise to take control of the Empire and destroy the Sith…then the Jedi…then the Republic.  He will raise a new Republic from it’s ashes and under his guidance it will be strong enough to never fall to any enemy.  A new Order of Force Warriors will protect it….not as corrupt as the Sith and not as Weak as the Jedi…..

Backstory:
As a child, Med was always curious about the world around him. Being Ysannan, he had a strong connection to the force. He was very close to his younger brother Desi and they would often escape the village to wander through the ruins of the Jedi Temple, even though such a thing was forbidden. He even managed ti avoid detection by the various Jedi archaeological digs happening in the area. Digging in the dirt often produced positive results as he uncovered numerous scrolls, artefacts and holocrons about both Jedi and Sith teachings. While Desi could sense something wrong about the Sith items, Med dismissed him, creating an impressive secret hidden collection.

Eventually though, he was caught entering the area by Jedi Vim-Da-Boda who, sensing the potential in the child, spoke with his parents to allow him to go undergo formal training at the Jedi Academy. However, his parents refused, creating a deep anger in him. From the little he had taught himself from the items he had recovered in his own digs, he had learned how to cloud his feelings from being sensed by others. It was in this capacity that he was able to gain sympathy from Vim, who decided to train him in secret while allowing him to aid in the continued excavation in the area.

A few years later, his affinity for collecting dark side artefacts and Sith teachings was uncovered, and he was forced to flee the planet by sneaking onboard a transport supply ship. Using his powers he was able to commandeer a ship of his own and travelled the galaxy looking for a way to increase his knowledge and power. He tried to find the original Sith homeward of Korriban, but was unsuccessful. He was able to find Trayus, the Sith Academy on Malachor V. When he landed he discovered a number of force-sensitives who had also been drawn to the planet.

Despite being thought completely destroyed centuries before, they discovered that much of the academy had been rebuilt by an individual called Darth Proll. Under his guidance, Med and the others were trained to become Sith Warriors and Assassins. He mastered two forms of Jedi combat; Shii-Cho and Juyo, combining them to create a new style he called "Kel-Maar". This new style allowed him to successfully take on multiple opponents at the same time and be victorious. Being partly based on Juyo meant he would not be vulnerable when engaging a single combatant. This impressed Darth Proll who appointed Dem as his Sith apprentice.

Med was experiencing visions of his brother dying and went to investigate. On returning his his home village on Ossus, he found that his brother had indeed died during a tunnel collapse at one of the Jedi digs. In a moment of unparalleled anger, Med lashed out and went on a spree killing almost every Jedi at the temple ruins. A few managed to escape alive. He was now truly Darth Knox.

Vowing revenge on the Jedi who he blamed for the death of his brother, Darth Knox returned to Malachor V. He commanded the respect of all the Sith Warriors and Assassins and was easily able to overthrow Darth Proll and proclaim himself Dark Lord of the Sith. He spent the next few months torturing information and Sith secrets out of Darth Proll, sending his Sith Warriors out on missions to kill Jedi who had collected anything containing Sith teachings or secrets.

He become a master in Sith Sorcery and Alchemy and, like many Sith before, tried to learn the secret of bringing some back from the dead. He achieved this feat, in a manner of speaking. While attacking a Jedi temple where he had learned a number of Sith amulets were stored, he was struck down during the battle and seemingly died. Two weeks later, his body was discovered by the Jedi during post-battle clean-up. While being loaded onto a transport so it could be taken and burned he seemingly came back to life, killing everyone present.

Escaping off the planet with a stolen cargo ship he discovered that his apprentice, Darth Praxis, had already usurped his leadership role. Retreating into hiding to bide his time, he discovered that while the Isaiwinokka Hoyakut had indeed worked, there had been an unforeseen side effect. He was neither dead nor alive, but somewhere in-between.
