I guess we could have a poll on who thinks Darth Vader would have lived if he didn't tell Luke to take his mask off.

I'm saying yes.

It is possible, Vader pretty much escaped death once, he possibly could have done it again

Then he would join the light side and fight evil once again.

Please, let the bad guys die !! Smiley

this remind me all the others discussions 'but he didn't died because on xyz book says...'

Boba Fett being saved by Dengar from the Sarlacc pit
Darth Maul returning from the dead with a half cybernetic body
Dark Sidious 'downloaded' in a Cylon old-fasion style to different clones

so wath next? "  Luke did not put his father on the funeral pyre, it was only Darth Vader's armor? " Smiley

So I vote no, Palpatine killed Vader with Force lightning as Vader's cybernetics, as well as his artificial life support system, made him much more vulnerable to the damaging effects of Force lightning. This vulnerability would eventually contribute to his death.

Vader: Luke, help me take this mask off.

Luke: But you'll die.

Vader: Do as I say, I'm your father!!

I also think Vader was too far gone. His breathing changed severely after being shocked by the force lightning. It may have only been a matter of time before he died. He knew he was going to pass on, so instead of delaying the inevitable, he requested Luke take his mask off so he could look on his son with his true eyes before he died. And yeah, Luke only burned the Darth Vader armor on the pier as to destroy the last remnants of his father's evil past. His body probably disappeared like Yoda did when he passed on.

Its in the script people.

I don't think there was anything that could have prevented Vader from dying. He already accepted his death so he would have died one way or another just like Padmé.

I agree. Whether or not it wass possible to save him, he wouldn't have wanted it. It seems like he chose to die, having made his choice to come back to the light side and save his son, and fulfill the prophecy.

We could also take a step back from the conjecture and accept the fact that...George Lucas wrote the script...and there's not a darn thing we can do about it.  Cheesy Lol. Then again....there's always fanfiction. Roll Eyes

Well there is that one alternate universe story of Return of the Jedi where Vader was turned back to the light side, but the Emperor escaped. Vader joined his children in hunting him down and donned a white suit to show he was now good...

I never actually read that one, only a brief explanation of certain parts.
