:: Firebird ::
:: Officer Toen ::

Once the hulking beast had ended his threat to devour Toen's fingers, the Imperial Officer returned to his snarling manner of speech. "Run along and help your masters, creature. With the might of the Empire after them, it is only a matter of time before this ship is reduced to dust and debris." Even as he spoke, Toen began to cackle, certain of the Empire's impending victory.

:: Captain Hrental, Ship's Captain, Yarkora, Qanotha's Command Deck ::

Even as sirens rang out across the Qanotha indicating a fire to be doused, Hrental noticed that the ship was receiving an encrypted message. "Display that message," he shouted to M'ken, the comm officer for the shift.

After hearing the distress in the smuggler's voice, the Yarkoran replied on the same frequency, "We read you, Ms. Vekraa. What seems to be the trouble? Is the mission proceeding as planned?"

:: Belyra Vekraa, Smuggler, Firebird ::

The comm crackled into life as the Captain of the Qanotha responded. "We read you, Ms. Vekraa. What seems to be the trouble? Is the mission proceeding as planned?"

"Pft, if by planned you mean we have the Empire on our asses then yes, everything is going swimmingly" the smuggler replied back sarcastically. Now that they were back in space Belyra could manuveur more easily and the TIEs lost the advantage of their modifications for atmosphere. She kept the ship constantly diving, rolling and changing direction to throw off the fighter pilots' aim.

"Either the Empire was tipped off that we were there, or something happened to make them jumpy... possibly a couple of somethings really, come to think of it. Out of nowhere Imperial troops tore through one of the marketplaces on Touk, shooting anything that moved. They just killed hundreds of civillians for nothing!" Outrage could be heard in her voice and her anger showed on her face. She grimly put that aside best as she could to avoid the TIE that had just circled around to do a strafing run at her head on. She redirected some of the power back to weapons, letting them automatically target the fast moving fighters. It wasn't as good as having a real gunner, but it would help buy them some time.

The other seven TIEs were closing in, and without bothering to pause the call to the Captain she called back to Tyy'n "Tyy'n, get your furry ass off the ground, stop your panic attack, and get to one of those damn turrets! If I don't get some cover fire soon you will really have something to worry about!"

She returned to reporting to the Captain, getting the coordinates ready in the navicomputer for a jump to hyperspace as she did so and priming the hyperdrive as she spoke quickly. "The three of us got back to the ship, I've destroyed three TIEs, I'm dancing with another two and I've got seven more closing in. Your XO managed to get a message through warning us of the TIEs and telling us to get out of here, so that's what I'm gonna do. Send me your coordinates, I'll do a few jumps around to throw off those damn Imps then return to.... kark!" Belyra broke off as several shots hit the deflector shields. These fighters were no green recruits, they were good.

She glanced back to see Tyy'n still huddled in the corner and swore again, then put on her best imitation parade ground voice and roared at him "GET TO THAT KRIFFING TURRET AND PROVIDE ME SOME COVER FIRE NOW SOLDIER!" That seemed to shock him out of his daydreaming. She muttered to herself "bloody useless...." before continuing to the Captain with a sense of urgency "look I didn't wanna blow whatever cover the shuttle is using by continuing to send them messages, but the Imps know something is up. I dunno where that scientist is, but they musta been protecting something back on Touk. I've got myself an Imperial officer as a prisoner, assuming neither of your men has killed him. Oh and it seems the information you lot got about this weapon on Alvor? I stole it not so very long ago from our unhappy guest here, and as a result it ended up in your hands. You can thank me later." The last bit she said with a hint of smugness.

:: Spc Tyy'n, bothan ::
:: Firebird, cockpit ::

Tyy'n's trunk slowly, undulated with his panicked breathing. The smuggler's words washed over him. She was so loud. Someone else's voice was there, too. Not human. The Captain? Tyy'n froze, mind blank. The Captain's voice echoing around in the empty void once filled by thought.

"GET TO THAT KRIFFING TURRET AND PROVIDE ME SOME COVER FIRE NOW SOLDIER!"

Tyy'n jerked, dislodging from his huddled pose. That was not the Captain, but it was an order. He was a soldier for the Alliance. A damn good one, too. More experienced than his paygrade told.

He had a duty to perform.

Tyy'n snapped to his feet and marched briskly out of the cockpit to the ladder and dropped into the ventral turret. He stared blankly at the controls and took a deep breath. Tyy'n shoved the headset on and activated the intercom with the cockpit.

"Specialist Tyy'n reporting from the ventral turret, ma'am. I have visual on two TIEs." He blinked stupidly, looking at the endless expance of sky, "I see... I see... I-"

Tyy'n shook his head. This was not the time to be shellshocked. He flicked switches, activating the systems he would need to operate the turret.

"Ventral turret: operational."

:: Belyra Vekraa, Smuggler, Firebird ::

“Good Specialist, now blast those damn fighters out of the sky while I prepare to make the jump to hyperspace!” Belyra barked the order at Tyy’n over the intercom. The comm line with the Qanotha crackled into life again and she listened to the message with an almost dumbfounded expression.

"Firebird, your message has been received and your request denied. The only word we have is that of a... woman who sells her services for credits. You claim that my people are with you and yet I hear nothing from them. For all we know, you are the one who tipped the Empire off and you are bringing them down on us. My people know that the Rebellion is of greater importance than their own lives. Qanotha is leaving the system."

“What?! No! Kark it all what is your problem?! Your people are right here they are dealing with the prisoner I’ll put them on...” Belyra spoke indignantly then stopped as the communication was cut. She tried to re-establish the communication as she spoke “Qanotha, come in. Qanotha, do you read me?” but they were ignoring her requests and nothing but silence answered her. She tried to pick them or the shuttle up on any of the usual frequencies but got nothing. Even the shuttle was ignoring her calls.

“Frell!” In rage she slammed her fist down on the console, thankfully missing any buttons and switches. “You kriffing, stupid, mangy, good for nuthin’, dirty sonuva dianoga! How could you be so bloody idiotic as to leave your karking teams behind like that when I just bloody told you what happened?!” The smuggler yelled at the now silent comm. She continued to curse and insult the Captain, each profanity more colourful than the last. The others could probably hear her throughout the ship but she didn’t care.

Alarms sounded as the seven fresh fighters joined in with the fight, and it broke her out of her barrage of swearing at the empty space within the cockpit. She sent the Firebird into even more aggressive manuveurs in the attempt to dodge the bolts of light streaking towards the ship from all around. As she did so she hurriedly recorded a message. “Shuttle this is the Firebird. Your frakkin sorry excuse for a Captain is abandoning the teams with the accusation that I’ve sold out to the Empire! Droyk! The Imps know we were there, they just mowed down an entire market sector on Touk slaughtering hundreds for nothing! Use caution, we gotta haul jets.” Belyra sent it out encrypted on all frequencies she knew of that the Rebels used, hoping that the shuttle would get it, and maybe the Qanotha.

An explosion rocked the transport and one of the contacts winked out on the radar. Tyy’n must’ve hit one. More alarms sounded as the shield deflectors were taking a beating, and she glanced with worry at the navicomputer. In a moment she would have the coordinates and they could make the jump. “Kark it! Almost done! Just a bit longer baby.”

:: Tyy'n, bothan, ventral turret ::

Tyy'n hammered away with the guns, but every time he got a lock on one of the fighters the manoeuvring of the ship would cause his shots to miss. The display was similar to that of a fancy sniper scope but relaying that information to the controls was unfamiliar. At the moment, Tyy'n was just spraying and praying.

The smuggler's swearing barked in his ear. He didn't appreciate their Captain being described in such profane ways, but funnelled the anger into his task.

A TIE swooped in too close to the belly of the ship and it was impossible for Tyy'n not to miss. The explosion rocked the freighter and Tyy'n snarled a mixture of gleeful triumph and uncontrollable apprehension.

:: Belyra Vekraa, Smuggler, Firebird ::

The TIEs were hammering them pretty hard now that there was eight of them. Alarms continued to sound warning them of low shields. "Oh shut up you damn thing, I know I know!" Belyra muttered.

Not a moment too soon the navicomputer 'dinged' and displayed that the coordinates were set. The jump wasn't too far, and as soon as they arrived she would jump them to another location to throw off the Imps. Belyra shrugged off the latest wave of Fighter attacks, aligned the ship and pulled the hyper drive lever. The stars became lines and the ship shot forward into hyperspace.
