It seemed as though there was division among the fans of Star Wars over the PC/Xbox offering "Star Wars: Republic Commando". "Republic Commando" was far from a perfect game, but it wonderfully captured the essence of Clone combat and made you sincerely feel the plight of these soldiers of the Republic. Everything from a musical score which broke from tradition and did not use Williams, to alien blood which spattered on the player's HUD, to seeing members of your squad disappearing over time as the war chipped away at the Republic were all reasons to play the game many times through and to love the adventure the game took you on.
Those who loved Republic Commando were inevitably disappointed with the game's short single player campaign which lasted a mere 5-10 hours of playthrough. Despite that fact, fans of the game have long looked forward to a sequel; a sequel which seemed as though it would never come. As someone who did love the game, I was heartbroken whenever I would hear of a studio gaining the rights to the series and then deciding to shelf the project. It seems that our toil is soon to be at an end.
In a press release this afternoon, DICE's own Patrick Söderlund announced that not only was a sequel to "Republic Commando" in progress, it is scheduled to be released this autumn. While appearing to be cautiously optimistic, Mr. Söderlund hinted that the sequel would be titled "Star Wars: Imperial Commando" and would be released toward the end of October, 2014.
While information is scarce at this point in time, a series of images were released at the time of the announcement which pictures Imperial Troops occupying a city and taking down Jedi. Could this game begin during the execution of Order 66? Only time will tell for certain. What we do know is that there was much rejoicing in our studio in the wake of the announcement and that this autumn will see "Imperial Commando" on all next gen systems. Want more?
