Deadline reports that Marvel has found its Doctor Strange: "Sherlock" star Benedict Cumberbatch. The studio is reportedly in negotiations with the actor to play the starring role.
The "Sherlock" star was said to be up for the role after rumored talks with Joaquin Phoenix reportedly fell through. Cumberbatch was reported to be on a shortlist of candidates to take on the Sorcerer Supreme along with Colin Farrell and Keanu Reeves.
Cumberbatch is no stranger to genre films -- not only has he lent his voice to "The Hobbit" trilogy as the dragon Smaug, but he also played a reimagined version of Khan in J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek Into Darkness." The actor rose to prominence for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in the BBC's "Sherlock," with prominent roles in "12 Years a Slave," "The Fifth Estate," "War Horse" and more.
Directed by Scott Derrickson, "Doctor Strange" has not yet officially been assigned a release date, though it's assumed to be a part of Marvel's Phase Three slate of films with a rumored debut of July 8, 2016.
