Okay, I thought SE meant high polish. I think the LE version is usually a black or silver or any other colour hilt with stripes(or accents) added on? What's so special about nickel plating that makes it more expensive?
The SE does typically mean high polish. Most times it's implied. Technically, they should have the Manticore SE & CE to better distinguish between high polish and the nickel plated versions. But I think they are endeavoring to keep the catalog as concise as possible. It's the processing of the nickel. It's expensive because you're adding another layer of metal over the aluminum of the hilt. It probably also takes some re-engineering on the part of US so that the plated dimensions work out to be equal to the high polish or anodized parts. |

Meaning they have to add another layer of metal but keep the hilt the same width? |

If i'm looking at it the right way, they have to machine the hilt differently, so that when they add the nickel plating, it ends up with the same dimensions as a polished version. I'm not sure how thick the plating is, when it comes to mating parts thousandths (.00X") of an inch can cause problems. I just got done having to sand down a speaker because it was about .010" too wide, and was getting stuck inside my Archon to where I couldn't get it out without somewhat drastic force. |
