I am not sure why I'm not interested in Ghostbusters, I'm just not. Anime, I have watched some, I just don't care for the way that the stories are told, and I also don't like that style of drawing. It is just me. I am different from most people, and I really don't care.
I'm not into anime but I can understand why lots of people like it.
Have you seen any of the movies from Studio Ghibli, like Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke or Howl's Moving Castle? Or the classics like Ninja Scroll, Akira or Ghost in the Shell? Or even the show Afro Samurai (narrated by Samuel L Jackson).
Anime, like any genre of movie, can be very taste specific and subjective. There are no bad genres of movie (as in every movie in the genre is bad) just as there is no genre where every movie is good. Obviously some people are drawn towards certain genres and put off by others. That is where experimentation and intelligent discourse comes in.
As someone who is a bit of a cinephile, I can heartily recommend lots of movies in any genre that I think a newbie to the genre will enjoy. If they don't, then that's fine. I would at least appreciate that they gave it a try.
Anime is very culturally different to Western animation, not only in terms of how it drawn, but some of the content and storylines too. It definitely won't be for everyone, especially some of the more fantastical movies. Personally, I love anime. Living in Japan for two years was a god send as I got to indulge my love for the genre with some great shows and movies that Western audiences just couldn't get at that time.
BTW Taegin - maybe instead of saying "wading through all the junk" it might comes across better if you asked for recommendations from someone who does like the genre. If they know that you're not a fan of unrealistic looking drawing they would be able to point you in the direction of some movies that might appeal to you. Just a thought
