Just weeks after the fan collective Apeiron announced that a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake is underway, gameplay footage of the project surfaces on YouTube.

The gaming world was sent into a state of frenzy a few months ago when rumors surfaced that a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake may be in the works. That rumor turned out to be false, but when fan effort known as Apeiron stepped forward and announced their own remake just a few weeks ago, a new Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic may actually soon be a reality. And based on some in-game footage that’s recently been released, it looks like the Apeiron team are putting together something special so far.

After being given the greenlight from Apeiron, YouTuber MrMattyPlays was the first to show some gameplay footage from the Knights of the Old Republic remake, and his four minute video reveals some very interesting details about the upcoming game. It must be noted that the gameplay footage was taken from a very early pre-alpha build of the game, so it appears that it will be some time before development of the remake will be complete.

One big takeaway from the footage is that it is in first-person rather than the third-person perspective from the original Knights of the Old Republic. Granted that this won’t be the first instance of a Star Wars FPS game, but it is an interesting development direction that Apeiron is going in. The video then shows off some very impressive reinterpretations of four Knights of the Old Republic levels: Lower City Taris, Upper City Taris, Endar Spire, and Anchorhead on Tattooine.

The footage doesn’t have much in the way of combat or gameplay, and is more of a tech demo for what the final game may look like, but the work Apeiron has done so far is incredibly impressive. For those wanting to see the Knights of the Old Republic remake gameplay footage themselves, check it out here.

While this is all impressive work from the Apeiron team, the biggest issue that may cripple the project is Disney. Regardless of where fan allegiances may lie, Star Wars is still the intellectual property of Disney, and the multimedia giant may not be too keen on seeing a high-quality project like this competing with some of their own games –  just ask the creators behind the recently-canceled Metal Gear Solid remake.

Remaking one of the best Star Wars games ever is a tall task, but based on what’s been revealed, it looks like Apeiron is doing an admirable job so far. Let’s just hope that the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake may actually see the light of day rather than being shuffled off to the cancelled video game graveyard.

As someone who is currently doing a playthrough of SW: KOTOR II, this video makes my heart pumping! Let's hope this project (fan-made or otherwise) will be a reality in the near future...

Thanks for sharing the video! A point for you, Sir...

Hi All,

Have you checked out the videos on YouTube showing the work ILMxLabs have done with VR tech? They built a recreation of Tattoine and had Artoo and Threepio "walk" you through the environment. There was all the buildings, a Millennium Falcon, Tie Fighters and Stormtroopers. Though it didn't make it into a game some of the animation and modelling was in The Force Awakens. I got to chat with a guy on another forum that works for an animation studio that supplied ILM with the 3Dmodel and mo-cap footage of Threepio and his Threepio model was used in a short scene.

ILMxLabs are working on an Occulus Rift project titled "Immortal Vader" due for release in 2019 and it looks impressive....most impressive!

That's what happens when you try to make and release unlicensed stuff that blatantly violates copyrights. Yes, I know it was a mod that requires the original game to run, but that still doesn't make it legal. I'm not a lawyer, so I don't know how legal or illegal it is, but Lucasfilm obviously thinks it's violating copyrights.

That is too bad, I was hoping they would actually finish the racing bit where you could get/craft parts for the speeder. Things like this you need to keep quiet until it is done and then just put it out there as a done deal.

If they'd kept it quiet and released it as a mod on Steam, Lucasfilm probably still would have had it pulled. All they had to do was file a copyright complaint with Valve.

It's a shame but stealing copyrights and not finding legal ways to work with something that isn't yours is a quick way to receive a cease and desist order.  It looked good though

Yeah, people feel bad for the fans who try this sort of thing and get shut down, but they never feel bad for the owners of the legally registered copyrights. Now, say you copyrighted something. You created something unique, copyrighted it and then someone else decided to copy it. You'd feel unhappy about that, possibly even pursue legal action. Yes, it would have been cool. But, there are limits to what you can do even with free stuff and game mods.

Exactly, just because you can doesn't mean that you should.  You can make a mod to an existing to look more realistic or have better graphics, but you probably shouldn't for legal reasons...
