Who watches the watchmen?

So I was teaching a class on saber spinning today and on the docket was the obi-ani or eclipse spin. I went into it thinking "maybe they will pick up enough of it to figure it out at home" remembering how long it took me to figure out that move. I explained it to them in terms including a chicken arm, a peter pan stance, and poking yourself in the navel, and bam! They got it. I was all kinds of surprised. I guess this is just the difference between personal instruction and learning from a web video in action.

I compare it to rolling your shoulder to throw and elbow strike or a looping hook in boxing.  It also helps to realize it's sort of an illusion as the saber doesn't really pass behind you as much as it seems.

It's tough to do via online methods.  As a major part of TPLA, we struggle with this issue constantly!  It's one of the reasons we're fond of our members utilizing supplementary swordsmanship methods "in person."

As far as online videos go, it started to click for me once I began recording myself.

I was just amazed by the difference. This is my first class, and in person, I can actually grab the saber blade and manipulate them through the action. Makes me wish I had had someone around to walk me through these things when I was learning them.

Three hours of instruction at this point. They have the clock face, the figure 8, the obi-ani, the plumb flower, walking and turning, two types of hand switch, the split plumb flower, and just approached their first aerial. Quick group. Next time we go for the behind the back switch and the blade barrier.

I had an awful time trying to figure out how to do this manoeuvre correctly, until I watched your vid  Master Venturous.

Now I've got it.  Not good at it.  Know what needs to be done though.

Thanks so much for that. Smiley -1

Plum flower and the blade barrier are both fun and useful moves to know. 😉

Plum flower I consider to be the key to effective freestyle.

It's definitely a foundational move that can be used to open up a lot of other things.

It seems to be the logical next step from the obi/ani.
