Light, Dark, both extremes annoy me

« on: May 18, 2016, 09:18:22 PM »

my gods this is an awesome hilt to fight with.

based on what other people had said I removed the sleeve with the chevrons on it. Holding it in a one handed grip just above the curve seems to be the best spot, its so well balanced, flicky and easy to change direction with, plus it seems to have a really long reach. My brother was going at me really aggressively and I could block every strike with minimal effort and intercept the next one immediately and feints were pointless with how quickly I could change direction. Defending against it is dam hard too, I was having to try quiet hard to get any hits in and took a lot more than normal.

in other words, this is an awesome saber for fighting

Glad to see someone else enjoys the dynamics of this saber. Very comfortable in a normal,  single,  and even a reverse grip.

gggrrrrrr, reverse grip, my pet hate. It goes against everything I've been taught and learned about sword fighting

knife fighting, different story

Reverse grip has very little if any viability in dueling/combat. It looks fancy but is in no way practical.  About the only thing I even remotely dobwith a reverse grip is spin to utilize a smaller saber.

I'm getting my mantis on Monday and I honestly cannot wait. I keep checking my phone every ten minutes to see if fed ex have sent an email saying they will be delivering earlier than scheduled. I remember seeing Count Dooku's lightsaber for the first time and I was like WOW (I was 14 at the time, and it has remained one of my favourite hilt designs - the first being Darth Vader's lightsaber). I'm really looking forward to seeing how it handles compared to my liberator

I'm curious as well your opinion.  My step-son has a Mantis and I've got two Liberators and I've got definite opinions on each.  I'm curious to hear what you think on Monday.  Gotta hate the waiting.

I finally got my crimson mantis (a day later than scheduled but at least it's here). Firstly, wow it is heavier and bulkier than I imagined. In terms of gripping this saber I find holding it just below the AV switch is comfortable when using one hand but for a two handed grip I prefer to remove the shroud with the arrows so that I can comfortably hold this saber above and below the AV switch. I have tried a 36" heavy grade blade and a 24" heavy grade blade (for indoor practice). I only wish the lower half of the hilt could be a bit slimmer

I've had the mantis for a couple of months now, haven't really trained with it because I can't find a comfortable grip with it for my hands. It is hanging on my wall on display. When I do randomly pick it up I prefer a two handed grip, one hand either side of the curve. My dominant hand grips the slimmest point (with the emitter shroud off) and the other holding the wider part, but my grip there is not as comfortable as I would like. I'm also using a heavy grade blade, maybe the mantis might balance better with a mid grade blade.
Maybe I should persevere with the hilt, and over time I could find the perfect way to hold it until it feels natural to hold Smiley

my friend has a couple mantis'.
with a shortest blade, I find it is better to hold one with the right hand in a reverse grip below the curve. and the other in the left above the curve
