You can't take the sky from me....

:: Mess Hall, Alliance CR90 Corvette Qanotha ::

Elayne walked into the mess hall, her mind more on her ship and the progressing repairs than on the mess hall itself. With luck it would be finished that night and she could run through the checks so it was ready for test flights the following morning. As Elayne she had changed her appearance a little, dropping the tight revealing clothing and overly flirtatious nature. Since she had just come from working on her ship she was wearing loose black coveralls that hid her curvaceous figure rather than her customary tight flightsuit or pants, with a black tank top underneath. She had her black combat boots on as well as her customary blaster belt, she hated going anywhere without it. Her fiery red hair had been dyed a dark auburn and was tightly plaited back and she had dirt and grease carelessly left on her face. Her hands were clean however since she was planning to have lunch.

It was later in the afternoon and the mess hall was relatively quiet, in fact the only other being she could see there was Tyy’n. The woman sighed inwardly, she didn’t particularly get along with the Bothan. He seemed to rather dislike her and she didn’t have a particular liking for him either after the stunt he’d pulled on her ship trying to shoot her. Given the mission they were about to go on she found herself needing everyone to trust her at least a little, and Elayne didn’t hold things against people like Bel did. She collected a tray of food, some type of stew and smelling rather delicious given she was used to ship rations, and a cup of dark Caf before heading over to Tyy’n’s table.

“Specialist” she greeted him in Elayne’s accent as she put her tray down. She slid into a chair opposite him. “Ready for the mission? The Shadow should be finished tonight with luck.” Her tone was fairly businesslike, lacking Bel’s flirty, carefree attitude.

:: Specialist Tharu Tyy'n, Bothan ::
:: Qanotha Mess Hall ::

Tyy'n was glad for the quiet time in the mess hall; gave him time to think and reflect on the upcoming mission without anybody else's opinions about it. Most people seemed disgruntled about being unarmed. Personally, Tyy'n thought that soldiers should be prepared for combat however it comes. Sometimes your firearm decides to bust up in a jam, and if you can't deal without it, then you're going to get yourself killed. Tyy'n trusted that the higher-ups weren't just putting them to the meat-rack.

An unfamiliar voice cut through his thoughts as a human female that Tyy'n didn't recognise sat down across from him. She wasn't wearing any uniform but seemed to recognise him and addressed him by rank. Then, with a little dismay, he realised who had sat down; it was the smuggler. Despite the change in hair, clothes, voice, and attitude, that face was unmistakeably one he had pointed a blaster at. Her tone was business-like, and he was somewhat relieved by her acumen.

"Ma'am," Tyy'n tried to greet her as warmly as he could. "Most people seem to distrust the tactician in charge of this mission, but we are professionals all with our expertise. I used to teach tactics on Bothawui and I know the boots on the ground rarely know the reasoning and planning that lead up to their position in the field, but professionals should be trusted to do their job. I'm ready to do my job. Are you ready to do yours?"

Tyy'n didn't mean to sound so suspicious, but a thought at the back of his mind was questioning what the real job was for someone with loyalties for credits. As far as she was concerned, maybe her job was only to grab what credits she could. But so long as that aligned with the safety of the Alliance Personnel, then at least he could trust her as far as he could throw her.

The words came across filled with suspicion and distrust, at least they seemed to in her mind. Part of her was screaming to snap back at him but she willed herself not to. Any lapses like that would get her kicked from the mission. Instead she took the mental equivalent of a deep breath and had a spoonful of her stew.

“Remember to drop the Ma’am once we are on mission Tyy’n, we can’t let it slip that you are soldiers, military attitudes go out the airlock. They distrust the tactician, because when it comes to getting in, it was pretty much all my idea. I have the knowhow, I have the alias and the ship, and I had the information. Not that I can particularly blame any of you, I wouldn’t have accepted the mission if I was the one playing prisoner. As to me being ready….”

She let one of her normal cocky grins slip out. “This is what I do hun. Just another day in my world, fooling people, sneaking around, making them think I’m someone I’m not. Nothing better than successfully pulling a con and when it’s the Empire I’m fooling that just makes it even more thrilling. Course this is stupidly dangerous and reckless even for me, should be fun. My only worry is all of you, I’m not used to working with others and the more people involved, the more chance of someone slipping up and giving the whole show away. Also dunno how yous expect to get free once we are in but I’m good at winging it, we will come up with something. All else fails my girl’s gonna be loaded with six high powered missiles, they’ll cause quite a stir.”

Her eyes gleamed at her words and she returned to eating her stew.

The trust that Tyy'n had placed in the mission's planning dropped considerably. The smuggler had admitted on more than just this occasion to being more spontaneous of action rather than planning things through. Tyy'n sighed visibly with his whole body, now poking at his food, previous appetite forgotten.

"Well I'm glad you're in your element. We are counting on you." Tyy'n said dryly. He looked up and let his mechanical arm drop the table between them with a heavy clunk. "I could overload a containment field with an electrical burst from this thing. If it is a field."

Then something struck Tyy'n as odd. "What are you getting out of this, Smuggler? If you're the one with all the intel and entry plan, what's your game pushing us into this facility? What's your real motivation here?"

Tyy’n’s body language spoke volumes, her words obviously hadn’t given him any confidence. She cursed inwardly, this was why she always lied, honesty rarely got you anywhere. When he questioned her motives she scoffed at him.

“Motivation? I got creds for my intel, and I’ve gotten my ship repaired. On top of that I get to pull one helluva con on the Imps. What more motivation do I need?”

The look he gave her was even more suspicious and she sighed outwardly. She’d give honesty one more try.

“I ain’t pushing this mission on nobody, but I wasn’t going to let the Alliance go on this mission without me if I could help it. The intel on its own wouldn’t do the Alliance much good, they could probably try and bombard the place or something but that wouldn’t let them know exactly what was going on. I on the other hand had a solid way in. I dun tend to be one for asking much about what I’m doing, if the credits are right and I’m hired to do something, I’ll see it through. I’ve seen plenty of bad things but Alvor?”

Elayne sighed again, purposely letting a small measured amount of her true feelings show. “You were there. You saw what they did. That was nothing short of monstrous. I’ve seen men shot down in cold blood just to prove a point, or because they were a little irritated with the person, or just for the sheer fun of it. Hell, I’ve been the one holding the blaster in that kind of situation. But the way those people were brutally mowed down like they were nothing and then casually discarded…. Because of us. That’s unforgivable. They didn’t care, just like when they murdered so many by blowing Alderaan to smithereens. Then when we found out about the Drongar facility and what it was suspected of doing, I couldn’t just stand by. I don’t like the idea of them building another kind of superweapon to use to slaughter innocent civilians.”

The woman had another bite of her food. “The Alliance ain’t the only people who dislike the Empire and what they are doing you know Tyy’n. When they used that Death Star of theirs it made many of us who already had our doubts truly begin to question them. That just went too far, there's a difference between fighting against those rebelling and openly committing mass genocide on the innocents. Where would they stop at, who else would they destroy just to make a point? Would it be my homeworld they hit next? My loyalties lie with myself, but I can't abide that. Some of us just do our little bit to be a thorn in their sides and cause them trouble.”

Her tone had been heavy and serious but it lightened slightly as she added “sides I get a kick out of doing dangerous shavit and it doesn't get much more dangerous than this.”

Once the smuggler opened up and expressed herself, Tyy'n felt himself slacken. Nodding in sympathetic agreement as she described the slaughtering of the Alvorian civilians, Tyy'n hummed his agreement.

"So, Miss Vekraa -- Korvani? -- you just fight to be a nuisance? I know some people in the Alliance fight for just that reason." The bothan's voice was low but housed a streak of disapproval and desperation, "But we need to be more than just a nuisance. If we really want to end genocide, we need to free planets from political oppression, not just break the tyrant's toys."

Tyy'n sighed again, this time reflecting on his own people and Bothawui. Almost to himself he said with a touch of sadness, "Some people need to wake up and think more collectively. Maybe we would get a little further not thinking so much about ourselves."

The smuggler seemed to regard Tyy'n quietly for a moment, and he took a spoonful of soup. "So what's so special about Drongar that you want to get involved there? The Empire makes death-weapons all the time, so why choose to fight with us now because we found this particular one?"

Bel considered the Bothan’s words as she ate, struggling not to snap back at him. She wanted to yell at him and say what right did he have to question her and what she did. Not everyone was willing to dedicate themselves to some cause like the soldiers. He questioned her some more and she paused in her eating to look at him. Why was she choosing to fight now? She thought she’d just answered that. Before Alvor she had been disgruntled with the Empire, but Alvor had upset her more than she thought it would. Eventually she shrugged.

“Right place, right time. I happened to be here, and you happened to need the help. Not a whole heap more to it really.”

There was more to it but she'd said plenty enough. The woman never revealed her true feelings or things about her self, yet since arriving on the Qanotha she'd done it time and again. Why hadn't she just left after that delivery?

Tyy'n frowned at the answer he got. Just when he thought the smuggler was getting honest, she was pulling back. Alderaan was a big game changer in terms of reasons to fight, but she hadn't made this kind of an effort then, something had to be different now. The bothan's fur shimmered slowly as he thought, but calmed down when he decided that pushing this human wasn't going to get him anywhere. He hummed in an agreeing sort of way.

They ate in silence, while the silence sat somewhere between comfort and discomfort. Tyy'n broke the silence: "I don't know anyone who's happy to be unarmed during this mission. Do you have enough space to carry enough weapons for everyone?"

The woman finished off her strew and sat back with her Caf. She shrugged again when Tyy’n questioned her more.

“They may not appreciate three mercenaries entering heavily armed, however at the same time no self respecting merc is going to wanna enter a place like that unarmed. Hopefully they will accept us having a few weapons. We are gonna have to play it by ear. Hiding a few extra pistols isn’t too difficult and I’ll have my two blasters and my carbine, if need be I can swap that for someone else’s rifle. Extra blades we can conceal but they won't be much help once the base is on high alert. Our best bet will probably be to smuggle a few extra weapons in and steal some off the guards we kill. Depends on how much they allow us in really, if we have to assault the place while the ship is taking out the targets we will be able to bring more with us.”

She nodded towards his arm, her expression thoughtful. “You ain't gonna be able to go in with that though, we might have to pull the power cells out. Ain't gonna be fun for you having the dead weight hanging off, but a few power cells will be easy enough to smuggle back to you and it'll give you back your advantage, rather than having to remove the arm which'll take longer to reattach and be harder to smuggle back in to you. Guess we will see what the captain and commander say about it.”

Tyy'n had to agree with the smuggler about the difficulty of smuggling arms into the facility. She would be the expert on that portion of the mission, but he had to trust the obvious expertise she possessed as a gun-for-hire. As such, with that kind of fluid loyalty came a certain knowledge that the Alliance could rely on to entrust the lives of their men. It was a bittersweet thought for Tyy'n; to appreciate the insight but despise the source.

At the mention of detaching his arm, the bothan looked down at his metallic limb and gulped. His fur shuddered as he remembered the experience he went through having the organic one taken from him. No doubt it would be much less painful -- this replacement had actually saved him a few times from pretty severe pain -- but the terrifying thought of having it removed it was more cumbersome than any physical hinderence.

"There's a power cell in here," Tyy'n indicated to the anterior compartment of his upper arm. "I've been through a few missions where it didn't make it as long as I did. I will be able to handle myself with it deactivated, but the sooner you get those power cells to me, the sooner I can help crush, zap, or slice our way through the facility."

Tyy'n stroked the forearm with sad affection. "I can install the power cells easy enough but if it's damaged, I don't have the skill to bring the mechanics back online. Next shore leave - next paycheck - I'm going to buy a simple replacements kit, should it be damaged mid-op." He paused and looked up at the smuggler. "I need to learn how to fix at least the basics, though," he said with some regret. Any electrical issues he could fix, but if it was anything mechanical at all then he needed someone else to do it all no matter how small. Tyy'n hesitated, "You wouldn't-- Nah, just forget it." He cut himself off quickly. She might have opened up a bit and started to show a bit of underlying loyalty to the cause, but she still couldn't be entrusted with his literal left arm.

The bothan quickly put something in his mouth, and chewed slowly.

A slow smile came to Elayne’s face and she cocked her head to one side as she considered the small furred being in front of her. Was he finally beginning to warm up to her even a little? Had the annoyance of putting up with him practically insulting her paid off?

“I'm a star ship mechanic, not a droid or cybernetic mechanic, if that's what you were about to ask. Transports mostly and I'm very familiar with see-ee-see ships since I grew up with them, though I could probably fix most things on most ships given the time, tools and parts.” She mentally hit herself at that. Why had she given away that she’d grown up working on Corellian ships?! She never said anything about her life growing up to anyone. Even when she worked with other crews she was very careful to give nothing away about who she was. Sure, it would probably be a given to anyone who knew she was Corellian that she had probably been exposed to CEC ships as well as starships in general since her early life but it wasn’t something she outright said! What was with her of late?!

Trying to ignore that and in the hope that Tyy’n wouldn't pick up on her blunder she gestured at the ship around them with one hand. “Hell, I could help repair this ship, she's see-ee-see as well and they love using similar components in their ships. This girl is just on a bigger scale and I've worked transports about this size in the past. In a pinch I could probably manage a repair on something like your arm since I can strip down and repair small components but I ain't got any experience in it.”

She had the last mouthful of her Caf and put the cup down on the table. “Why don't you take it to the techs down in the hangar? I'll have to admit they seem to know their stuff and one of them is bound to be familiar with this kind of thing, after all there's a whole squad of droids for the fighters which are helping on my ship at the moment. For that matter one of the astromechs could probably fix it.”

Tyy'n was wrapped up in his self-consciousness of almost asking the smuggler to teach him to take care of his cybernetic that he almost didn't register what she said next. It wasn't until She mentioned repairing the Qanotha that he realised how tied to Corellia she was. Tyy'n only had a rough idea of how humans aged and wondered when it would have been that she had grown up. Possibly she was old enough to know the days of the Clone Wars, to have seen those ships constructed, but then again she might grown up completely under the Empire's shadow. Very different times for the Corellian shipyards. Not that it mattered at the moment.

Tyy'n's thoughts were interrupted by the smuggler suggesting the techs in the hanger to fix his arm. With the musings of Vekraa's past forced from his mind, Tyy'n distractedly said in Bothese, "[Oh yeah, that's where I usually go.] Excuse me," Tyy'n switched back to Basic, uncommonly courteous to the smuggler, "Those droid technicians do a good job, and where I normally go after every mission for a tune-up, but I've never asked them to teach me anything before. Maybe I should follow that suggestion."

Trying to casually probe for more information, Ty'n asked offhandedly, "This would be one of the bigger ships you'd have worked on then? That freighter you've got, little more straightforward I would guess."

Elayne instantly recognised his fishing for information and automatically went on her guard. She looked at him steadily for a while before replying, after all she wouldn't be giving much away and by now her beloved YT's secrets were known by the crew of the Alliance corvette. “No. I've shipped out on freighters that make this thing look small.”

She looked at him a moment longer, considering whether to offer more information up regarding that. She knew his fear of flying was in part due to the number of crashes he'd been in and the injuries he'd sustained in the process. She wasn't sure whether it'd make him trust her more, or rile him up. She wasn't actually bothered which way it went, if it riled him up she would get a small amount of amusement out of it as underhanded payback for insulting her and trying to get more information out of her and decided to say it anyway. “I've even piloted them, was at the helm of one when it crashed after being attacked by pirates. Not one of my most pleasant flying experiences but freighters like that handle about as well as a moon and have no armaments to protect themselves against attack. I prefer small transports and no. With all the modifications my girl has she is far from straightforward, everything tweaked and balanced to within a micrometer to get the best performance out of her. Why do you think it's taking us three days to do repairs with a whole crew of technicians working on her?”

Tyy'n was taken aback by the casual way that the smuggler admitted to crashing a huge ship. The bothan's fur trembled and he stuttered his disbelief as she continued to talk. Tyy'n was left with his mouth hanging open, shocked at having entrusted his life to this reckless woman before. Maybe later once he'd had time to reflect calmly on the situation Tyy'n would get something more positive from this moment, but in the moment Tyy'n's flying anxiety prevented that.

He stood up suddenly, chair clattering to the floor behind him. The sound died excruciatingly slowly in the empty room as the smuggler just looked at him bemused. Tyy'n stood, tight-chested, "I- i-..." He mumbled wide-eyed, staring at this lunatic. Then, louder than he meant to say: "I have to duties to attend to."

Tyy'n went for the door in a hurry, leaving his food tray on the table, forgotten and half finished.

Elayne watched slightly amused as the Bothan stammered and then scampered from the room. Once he was gone she burst out laughing. She might have just made things overall worse with that little stab at him but right now she found that too amusing. She shook her head as she stood up, collected both trays and took them over to the side of the counter before leaving herself. Whoever had decided to station a soldier with such a fear of flying on a corvette rather than a ground base must have been an evil bastard.
