Always scanning the horizon...

« on: August 08, 2016, 08:15:09 PM »

I got myself a Dark Manticore emitter, and it's awesome!

-Well 99.5% awesome.  You see, when it arrived, the blade screw was directly on the front of the saber:

I didn't really like that, so considered using an o-ring to stop the threading early.

I swapped that idea for a button head screw.  I ordered them online, and had a terrible time finding the proper size- in black - couldn't find anodised, or otherwise glossy black, so it's not a perfect match, but I do think it looks better.  More rugged.

Thoughts?

I like it.  Even though it's not a perfect match, it looks good.

Actually I find this screw more characteristic on the hilt with more meaning as a feature!
I don't remember too much mods with regards to the retention screw but when I look at my Prophecy I can see it well justified!
Point!

Looks cool LR . . . . +1  Smiley

Thoughts ? . . . If you want, you could try to paint the top of the screw with a gloss black . . . I think it was Seano that painted his Prophecy screws in black, they looked really great . . .

I thought of that actually...or even that gunmetal colour I used on my Prophecy.

Very cool experimenting Lord Rapine, I'm digg'n the result Smiley.  Point incoming ASAP.

Yep, gloss black spray bomb'n works pretty well- helps to go heavy on the matte clear for protection.  I did that to the button screws I put through the vented sentinel pommel on the yellow jacket mod (to hold spikes in place).

It makes them pretty much invisible except when lit directly

The only thing is... no matter how well you clear coat them they're eventually gonna wear shiny again from use, which you can already start to see around the base of those screws from where they bind against inside wall of pommel, if you look close at second pic.  Apologies for how dirty that pommel was lol, it's been cleaned since lol.  A retention screw would be even more prone to wearing shiny.  But honestly I've found simple black nail pollish is the best option for areas like that- where it's gonna wear off no matter what... cause it takes all of 3 seconds to apply/ re apply it, super easy and dries in no time, so can be done/ touched up all the time... compared to painting the screws, which takes days of curing between all the coats etc.  Yeah the paint lasts a bit longer... but not THAT much longer if you hit the black pollish with clear nail polish after as well.

Also, you can use aluminum blackener on the set screw hole WHILE THE SCREW IS IN/ SEATED IN PLACE ALL THE WAY, and it balckens the little little shiny areas of threading/ hole that might shine out from under stuff when looking from odd angles or in direct light.  I also did that on all the holes in that project if anyone curious. It often won't affect the screws themselves, the blackener is really designed for non ferrous (little to no iron) metals, but you'd be surprised sometimes lol.
